Unit 3 Getting along with others.单元阅读与写作过关练
Part1 单元阅读过关
一、阅读理解。
Today, friendships can develop between people from different countries or even different time zones. Social media and online platforms help people stay connected, no matter where they are. However, this convenience also has downsides. Traditional friendships usually grow from spending time together in person, having deep talks, or sharing important experiences. But nowadays online friendships often depend on short messages, funny pictures, or quick comments, which don’t create the same strong connection.
When we chat online, we miss important emotional signals(信号) such as tones of voice, facial expressions, and body language. Psychologist Albert Mehrabian found that these nonverbal signals make up about 70% of a conversation’s emotional meaning. While emojis(表情符号) and GIFs help fill the gaps, they’re not enough. Dr. Susan Pinker, a researcher, says that digital friendships can feel shallow because people tend to focus on information sharing rather than the expression of true feelings.
Meeting friends in person actually makes our brains produce dopamine(多巴胺), a chemical that makes us feel happy. Studies show that people who see their friends’ social media posts get 50% less dopamine than those who meet face-to-face. That’s why online communication can leave us feeling more tired than pleased.
But we don’t have to give up online friendships entirely — we can make them more meaningful. One idea is to use virtual characters that copy real-life gestures and expressions. Another trend is “Screen-Free Saturdays”, where people take a break from digital devices to focus on real-world connections. Some friendships, like those in online games, even mix both online and offline meetings — they play games together virtually and also meet in person when possible.

二、七选五。
Friendship needs care and attention to keep it in good health. Here are five ways to sustain(保持) long-distance friendships.
·Set a regular date
Long-lasting friendships share the characteristic that both sides equally contact(联系) and share with one another. With busy schedules, squeezing in phone calls can be a challenge.1. ___.
·More isn’t always merrier
Make sure you have communicated with your friend about how frequently each of you wants to be contacted and what method works best for you both. 2. ___.There are alternatives to constant written communication, such as leaving voice messages or having a group chat.
·Practise empathy(共情)
3. ___. The friend who is remaining needs to be sensitive to all the additional time demands placed on the friend who has moved. The one in the new environment should be sympathetic to the fact that your friend may feel abandoned.
·4. ___
Anniversaries and birthdays carry even more weight in long-distance friendships. Although technology might make day-to-day communication possible, extra effort goes a long way on special days. Simply keeping a diary that keeps track of friends’ birthdays and other important dates will make sure nothing slips by you.
·Don’t rely on technology alone
5. ___, but long-distance friendships — even close ones — may require more conscious effort to sustain. Try to seek out chances to renew friendships. How to do it? Just spend face-to-face time together whenever possible.
A. Remember important dates
B. Compensate by writing letters
C. It is also helpful for you to be a friendship keeper
D. Try to find a time that works for both of you and stick to it

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Hannah and I have been best friends since primary school and we spend almost every day with each other. Sometimes, other children say we are boring because we are both very academic and like to study, but we like it that way. We learn from each other, inspire each other and both get good grades at school.
Last Monday, our math teacher Miss Smith gave us a surprise math quiz(小测验). Some of my classmates felt worried and nervous but Hannah and I were confident and gave each other an encouraging smile before we got down to doing the quiz. After the quiz while others were complaining about the “surprise” and expressing their concern about the result, I laughed loudly, “It’s so easy! I’m sure to get a good grade!”
Ironically (具有讽刺意味的是), on Tuesday afternoon, Miss Smith told me after class that I had the lowest grade in the class. I couldn’t believe my ears. What a shame! How could I be so stupid to fail such a simple math quiz?
Afterwards, I tried my best to hide my upset and pretended to be cheerful, but Hannah sensed something was wrong. When we went to wash our hands in the girls’ washroom, she looked into my eyes and asked, “What happened, Sarah?” With tears welling up, I admitted how badly I had done. “Hannah, please don’t tell anyone else,” I begged in a choked voice. She hugged me, saying she would keep my secret.
However, the next morning, I noticed that some classmates were staring at me strangely and others whispering and chuckling (暗笑) as I came into the classroom. When I went to sit down, I was shocked to find a piece of paper on my desk that said, “Stupid Sarah got a D!”A flush of shame and anger overwhelming me, I felt my face was burning. I thought that Hannah must have told my classmates about my grade after promising not to. Everyone must have been laughing behind my back!
