Do you know where the Flaming Mountains are? They are in Turpan, in the east of Xinjiang.
It’s known as one of the hottest areas in the world. The desert sand can be as hot as 80℃ in mid-summer. That’s enough to make your feet burn! Rainfall in Turpan is only 16 mm a year. How do people survive in such a terrible climate? The secret lies in the ancient karez system (坎儿井系统).
The karez system includes more than 1, 000 wells (井). They appear every 20 — 30 metres. Some of them are 100 metres deep! Under these wells are large underground canals (地下渠道). Water from the mountains falls into the wells. It then runs underground in the canals. It is kept cool and safe from the desert heat. There are over 5, 000 km of underground canals in the area. Thanks to the karez system, people can grow plants for food in this difficult environment. And amazingly, all of this was completed with only hand tools!
Today, the water in the area is scarce. There is less water from the mountains, lower rainfall and a large increase in water use. Although modern technology is solving some problems, the karez system still plays an important role. Now, more and more young people are taking action to protect it. The centuries-old water system will surely be carried into the future.
29. Where are the Flaming Mountains?
A. In the south of China. B. In the west of Xinjiang.
C. In Turpan, east of Xinjiang. D. In Turpan, north of Xinjiang.
30. The underlined word “scarce” in the last paragraph means “________”.

An avalanche (雪崩) is a large amount of snow, ice and rocks moving quickly down a mountain, especially on slopes (斜坡) of 30° to 45°. It can move at a speed of 96 km/h to 129 km/h.
Different things can make avalanches happen suddenly. About 90% of avalanches happen because of human activities. Earthquakes and even animals’ movements can also make them happen.
Avalanches happen all year round. Most of them are small, but in high mountains, such as the Himalayas, they can be very large and dangerous. When it happens, the fast-moving snow, ice and rocks can sweep away everything on the way. They cover people alive and the snow is so heavy that they can’t breathe. Some avalanches cover all the houses and villages along the way. Once an avalanche stops, the snow becomes too hard to move. That can make people under it die of the cold.
What can we do to stay safe if we want to climb snow mountains? Never start climbing when the snow begins melting, especially in spring. Wait for at least 2 days to start climbing after a snowstorm. Keeping quiet in the mountains is also important. And always make sure you have the right tools and know how to use them. Also, you’d better tell someone your plan before climbing so that they can help if needed.

阅读下面的语篇材料,根据所读内容,完成下列各题。
Do you laugh every day? Most people do. Scientists say that people laugh about 17 times a day on average. That is a lot of laughter.
In India, there are hundreds of laughter clubs. They aren’t a place for people to watch interesting shows. They’re a place for people to practice laughing. People get together every morning. First, they put their hands on their heads. Then they pretend (假装) to laugh. But after a short time, everyone is laughing naturally. They say they feel good after laughing together.

Scientists say that one hundred laughs are the same as ten minutes of running. For another, when we laugh, we also breathe deeply which helps us relax. That’s good for us, too.
Why do we laugh? That’s a hard question to answer. We know that people laugh more often in a group. They don’t laugh very often when there is no one with them. Many scientists believe that we use laughter to connect with other people. Laughter helps us feel part of a group.

A. enough B. short C. dirty D. clean

B. The karez system was built with modern machines.
C. People in Turpan cannot grow any food because of the heat.
D. The karez system includes over 1, 000 wells and many underground canals.
