Volunteering is becoming more and more popular these days. It is not only a way to help people in need, but also a good chance for teenagers to improve themselves and enrich their life experiences. As an eighth-grade student, I have taken part in many volunteer activities in my spare time.
Last Saturday, I joined a volunteer group to help clean up the city park. When we arrived in the morning, we found some plastic bags, empty bottles and waste paper on the grass and along the roads. We divided ourselves into small groups. Some picked up the rubbish with tools, some swept the paths, and others reminded visitors to protect the environment. Soon some visitors began to follow our example.
After three hours’ hard work, the whole park became clean and tidy. The fresh air and green trees made people feel comfortable. Although we felt a little tired, we were full of joy and pride. We knew our small effort could make our city more beautiful.
Besides cleaning parks, I also go to the old people’s home once a month. I chat with the lonely old people, help them wash clothes and tell them interesting stories. Most of the old people there live alone and they really need care and company. Every time we leave, they always thank us with warm smiles.
Volunteering teaches me a lot. It makes me learn to care about others instead of only thinking of myself. It also improves my communication skills and makes me more outgoing. I will keep on doing volunteer work and call on more classmates to join us to pass on warmth and kindness to our society.

The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means someone who offers his or her services. There are many different ways people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, helping kids without families, and picking up rubbish from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work in their own countries or other countries. They often strongly wish to help people poorer than themselves and never expect any pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person can offer services to help other people. My friend Tracy recently came back from India with a new understanding of being a volunteer. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes (特蕾莎修女之家) in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in high school. We watched a video about her work in India and across the world. Her spirit of helping others and endless love for everyone moved me so much that I hoped to do the same work after graduation. So I flew to Calcutta with two friends for a few weeks.”
“I worked in a home for sick people. I washed clothes and sheets (床单), handed out lunch, and fed those too weak to feed themselves to cheer them up. I found sharing time with them meant more than simply giving help. To be honest, I offered little real help. I then realized I came there not to give help, but to learn and experience a new culture. This experience deepened my understanding of life and the world.”

Kurt and his wife Rita have spent many years making meals for the homeless people in Berlin. They first began to do that during a hot summer. After seeing homeless people struggling (挣扎) to find something to eat on the street, Kurt and Rita decided to make some food for them.
Kurt and Rita soon found that simply giving out food wasn’t enough. Most of the homeless people were lonely. They had no friends or family. “What these people also need is care,” said Rita. Later, Kurt and Rita came up with an idea. They gave their phone numbers to the homeless people and told them to call up anytime. And their home was always open to the homeless people in need.
Kurt and Rita soon ran out of all their money and got into trouble. Kurt then visited some companies to ask for donations. After knowing what they did, over thirty companies saved money to buy food or other things for them. Many volunteers helped to hand out these things to the homeless.

【详解】26.文中第二段明确提到“Last Saturday, I joined a volunteer group to help clean up the city park.”,直接说明作者上周六在城市公园做志愿者工作。
27.根据第二段内容:首先到达公园发现到处都是垃圾(② They saw lots of rubbish everywhere in the park.);接着分成小组(① They divided themselves into small groups.);然后分组做不同的清洁工作(④ Some picked up the rubbish with tools, some swept the paths);最后游客开始效仿志愿者(③ Some visitors started to copy what the volunteers did.),正确顺序为②①④③。
28.第四段提到“I chat with the lonely old people, help them wash clothes and tell them interesting stories. Most of the old people there live alone and they really need care and company.”,说明作者去敬老院是为了照顾孤独的老人,给予他们关爱和陪伴。
29.根据第四段划线词所在句的前文“Most of the old people there live alone”可知,they指代的是前文提到的那些独居的老人。
第一段明确指出志愿者工作包括:“such as taking care of sick people, helping kids without families, and picking up rubbish from beaches and parks.”,A、B、D均符合,而C“周末拜访朋友”不属于志愿者工作。
32.第一段明确指出:“They often strongly wish to help people poorer than themselves and never expect any pay.”,说明志愿者提供免费帮助且不求回报。
33.根据第三、四段内容,Tracy的经历顺序为:①在高中了解特蕾莎修女(“I first heard about Mother Teresa in high school.”)→②被视频感动(“We watched a video... moved me so much”)→③飞往加尔各答(“I flew to Calcutta with two friends”)→④照顾病人(“I worked in a home for sick people.”),故顺序为①②③④。
34.第四段指出:“I then realized I came there not to give help, but to learn and experience a new culture. This experience deepened my understanding of life and the world.”,说明Tracy在印度获得的新认识是更好地理解了生命和文化。
35.文章第一段解释“volunteer”的含义,第二至四段通过Tracy的故事进一步说明,因此组织方式是“通过解释词义和讲述故事”。

If I’m accepted, I promise to take part in volunteer activities actively and try my best to finish every task. I’m looking forward to your reply.
