Fifteen-year-old Sansa has been writing for eight years and has been working on a book for the past four Feeling stuck and unable to write, she started searching for writing groups in Los Angeles, looking for guidance When she found WriteGirl, she was inspired.
Keren Taylor started WriteGirl in 2001 as a way to help teen girls who did not have access o creative writing programs. “Teen girls are incredibly vulnerable (脆弱的) and invisible,” Taylor said. “They really need to be lifted up and inspired.”
At WriteGirl,400 women writers volunteer to mentor (指导) 700 teenagers a year. Every girl who has gone through the mentorship program has gone to college and several have pursued careers as professional writers. Through the program, girls dive into poetry, fiction, songwriting, play and so on, learning techniques from professional women writers. This leads to well-rounded training and sets WriteGirl apart from other organizations.
A typical exercise at WriteGirl is mic and rant, a 30-second session before writing for each girl. As a vehicle for teens to get their ideas out. it empowers girls to explore anything meaningful to them. “Not the flowery language, or rather, complicated expressions that sound skillful, but more of the natural, this is what I’m thinking and what I’m feeling.” Taylor said.
Sansa’s mentor Danyella Wilder is attracted by the long-term nature of mentoring at WriteGirl. Wilder wishes she had a program like this herself when she was 15. “To just have an organization where people take the time to offer you simple encouragement, ‘Hey, good job,’ or ‘That was amazing.’ You’re at the age where you need to hear that.”

It’s common knowledge that the woman in Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting seems to look back at observers, following them with her eyes no matter where they stand in the room. But this common knowledge turns out to be wrong.
A recent study finds that the woman in the famous painting is actually gazing 15.4 degrees to the right of the viewer — well outside of the range that people normally believe when they think someone is looking right at them. The study’s author, Horstmann said “She’s not really looking at you, which is kind of funny because people often think the subject’s gaze (凝视) in artworks or photos seems to follow them around. This is called the ‘Mona Lisa effect’. Even if someone is painted looking straight, viewers from different angles still feel they’re being looked at.” As long as the angle of the person’s gaze is no more than about 5 degrees off to either side, the Mona Lisa effect occurs.
This is important for human interaction with on-screen characters. If you want someone off to the right side of a room to feel that a person on-screen is looking at him or her, you don’t cut the gaze of the character to that side. Surprisingly, this might give the impression that the character isn’t looking at anyone instead, keep their gaze straight. Observers directly in front within a reasonable angle, will feel the character’s stare, thus improving interactivity.
Horstmann and his co-author were studying this effect for its application in the creation of artificial-intelligence avatars (虚拟头像) when Horstmann took a long look at the “Mona Lisa” and realized she wasn’t looking at him. To make sure it wasn’t just him, the researchers had 24 people look at pictures of the “Mona Lisa” on a computer. They put a ruler between the screen and the viewer. They asked the people to see where Mona Lisa’s eyes met the ruler. They moved the ruler to measure Mona Lisa’s gaze. They found that most people thought Mona Lisa wasn’t looking directly at them, but a bit to their right.
So why do people repeat the belief that her eyes seem to follow the viewer? Horstmann isn’t sure. It’s possible, he said, that people have the desire to be looked at, so they think the woman is looking straight at them. Or maybe the people who first came up with the name “Mona Lisa effect” just thought it was a cool name.
28. It is generally believed that the woman in the painting “Mona Lisa” ________.
A. attracts the viewers to look back.
B. seems mysterious because of her eyes.
C. fixes her eyes on the back of the viewers.
D. looks at the viewers whatever their location.
29. What gaze range in a painting will cause the Mona Lisa effect?
A. B.
C. D.
30. The experiment involving 24 people was conducted to ________.
A. confirm Horstmann’s discovery.
B. create artificial-intelligence avatars.
C. calculate the angle of Mona Lisa’s gaze.
D. explain how the Mona Lisa effect can be applied.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Mona Lisa Effect: A Common Misunderstanding
B. The Mona Lisa Truth: Gaze of On-screen Characters.
C. Secrets Behind Mona Lisa’s Smile
D. Application of the Mona Lisa Effect
D
Arguably, the biggest science development of the year to date has been the images of the very depths of the universe taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).Those images beg a comparison between the external and internal universe: that science is bent on observing and understanding.
Decades ago, astrophysicist Carl Sagan famously said, “The cosmos is also within us. We are made of star stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself.” He was commenting then on the reality that our internal universe was as complex and as fantastic as the outer space.
There are many similarities between the progress we’ve made in understanding the universe and in piecing together life’s inner workings. Like the technological developments that took us from Galileo’s telescope to the Hubble to the JWST, life science tools have also improved rapidly. From early light microscopes to modern super resolution ones, these developments have afforded researchers a deep look into biology’s infinitesimal (无限小的) landscape.
Going beyond observing organisms, life scientists can now discover the workings of molecules (分子). And that is where scanning the universe differs from peering into biology Understanding the universe from a functional standpoint is not an immediate urgency understanding biology on that level is. Simply observing cells is not enough. Biologists must characterize how all those parts interact and change in different environments and when faced with challenges. Knowing how viruses gain entry into cells and spread can save lives. Through time, not only can life science tools produce images of cell components, but more importantly, they can help predict the effects of drugs on receptors, of immune cells on foreign invaders, and of genetic changes on development and aging.
This is not to belittle the work of scientists researching into universe. They should rightly be praised for delivering views of impossibly distant, impossibly massive phenomena. My aim is to celebrate these accomplishments while at the same time recognizing that science’s inward search for detail and insight is equally impressive and, in my view, more urgent. The output of both the outward and inward explorations should stimulate wonder in everyone.
32. Why does the author quote Carl Sagan’s comment in Paragraph 2?
A. To introduce the background. B. To prove an assumption.
C. To make a comparison. D. To present an idea.
33. Like the study of the universe, life science has been advancing in ________.
A. study approaches B. system management
C. research facilities D. technology combination
34. We can infer from Paragraph 4 that biologists’ work is ________.
A. practical B. interactive C. flexible D. complex
35. As for life science which would the author agree with?
A. It has received universal recognition. B. It should enjoy priority in development.
C. It can be applied in the majority of areas. D. It is more complicated than space science.

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It is defined as the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren’t invited or they just didn’t feel like going 36 . This belief, in turn, can create anxiety and a sense of inferiority (低等). FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they’re often online.
One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing (重塑) thinking 37 Here are some tips on how teens can start to reframe their thinking.
Track negative thoughts and replace them with reasonable ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal. 38 . Then, they can change their thoughts and replace the negative thoughts with something positive.
39 Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend But this does not mean that they’re necessarily missing out on something.
Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural cure for FOMO But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes 40 . The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies — anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A. Be realistic about availability.
B. There are some negative consequences of FOMO.
C. Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media.
D. It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.
E. In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.
F. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’re not in social media at all.
G. This allows them to observe how often they’re feeling negative about themselves.
