A new smartphone usually comes with a better camera, faster processing, more storage, and a better screen. However, all of this constant smartphone turnover is causing serious damage to the environment, especially when it comes to getting rid of older phones. A study predicts that smartphones and data processing centers will be the most environmentally harmful part of the communications industry by 2040. The scale of the problem is huge. An estimated 5.3 billion mobile phones will be thrown away in a year, according to the WEEE Forum and the UN’s Global E-Waste Monitor. When items like laptops and cellphones end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场), they release harmful chemicals into the environment. Paul Smith, Director General of the WEEE Forum, said, “People tend not to realize that all these seemingly unimportant items have important value, and together at a global level represent huge quantities.” He added that waste recycling groups are trying to make it easier for people to deal with small electronic waste. A UN report also describes global ideas for reducing the electronic waste problem, including setting universal recycling standards and legal requirements. Fortunately, solutions exist. Recycling electronic waste can recover valuable materials such as gold, copper, silver, and palladium, which can be reused in other products. Some of the best ways to deal with a smartphone at the end of its life are giving it directly to the phone’s producer, a retail store (零售店), or donating it to a charity to be repaired and reused. There are also several ways to up-cycle an old cellphone, for example by turning it into an alarm clock, a security camera, or an e-reading device. 1. What is particularly mentioned as a cause of environmental problems? A. Abandoning old smartphones. B. Producing a new smartphone. C. Building data processing centers. D. Improving the communications industry. 2. How much gold can be found in 2 tonnes of PCBs? A. 100g. B. 150g. C. 300g. D. 1600g. 3. What is the author’s suggestion for dealing with an old smartphone? A. Selling it in a retail store. B. Using it to read e-books. C. Throwing it into the dustbin. D. Recovering metals by yourself. B Sarah Strong, a forward (前锋) at University of Connecticut (UConn), leads the Huskies in points, rebounds, steals, and blocks. She helped UConn win the 2025 NCAA championship, broke UConn’s steals record and became the third-fastest player in program history to score 1,000 career points. Yet she does not seek the spotlight. Her talent speaks for itself. Basketball is in Strong’s blood. Her mother was a WNBA player; her father played professionally in Europe. Sarah started training at age seven. Every Sunday, she and her dad spent hours in a gym, learning every aspect of the game. But one thing she lacked was confidence. A major setback came in late December of her freshman year at UConn. She missed two free throws in the final seconds, and the team lost by two points. The game bothered her. She spent her Christmas break watching it over and over. But she learned to stop spiraling over mistakes. She started talking to her coaches and family after every game, taking their advice, and then letting it go. “It’s a game at the end of the day,” she says. “I can’t go back to change it. Just focus on the next game.” That attitude has shaped who she is. Thanks to her quiet determination, next season the Huskies will be Strong’s team. She is about to become the primary face of the program. Strong, however, doesn’t care about individual success. She leads by example. She hates the thought of making an award acceptance speech. “I’m not really focused on the spotlight,” she says. “The only pressure I feel is from my coaches and showing up for my team.” She calls the shots about what you see, on and off the court. And she remains a mystery-a superstar who lets her game speak, while keeping everything else to herself. And that’s exactly how she wants it. 4. What can we know about Strong’s parents? A. Her father forced her to play basketball. B. They both played basketball professionally. C. Her mother was more famous than her father. D. They met each other while playing in Europe. 5. What does the underlined word “spiraling” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Staying calm. B. Getting upset. C. Feeling excited. D. Becoming angry. 6. What can be inferred about Strong’s personality from the last paragraph? A. Anxious and shy. B. Outgoing and caring. C. Ambitious and curious. D. Modest and strong-minded. 7. What does Strong’s story show? A. Still waters run deep. B. Practice makes perfect. C. Every cloud has a silver lining. D. Don’t judge a book by its cover. C For decades, consumers believed that saving money meant buying the cheapest option or waiting for the biggest discount. But Generation Z — those born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s — is rewriting this rule. Gen Z’s spending habits are not a sign of financial irresponsibility; instead, they represent a smarter and more emotionally intelligent approach to value for money. At first glance, Gen Z appears to be tightening their belts. According to PwC’s 2025 Holiday Outlook, this group plans to cut holiday spending by 23%, and between January and April 2025, their overall spending dropped by 13%, especially on clothing and electronics. However, this is not just about saving money. The same research shows that 51% of Gen Z are eating out less, 33% are buying fewer clothes, and 29% are reducing beverage (饮料) consumption — not to save money, but afford what they call “meaningful buying”. This proves that Gen Z measures value not by how little they spend, but by the emotional return on every dollar. One clear example is the popularity of “dupes” — cheaper alternatives (替代品) to expensive products. PwC found that 82% of Gen Z plan to buy dupes during the holiday season, and 63% look for old-style or up-cycled goods. Gen Z sees dupes as clever choices. By choosing dupes, they reject the old thought of “high price = high value” and replace it with “smart choice = high value”. However, this pursuit of affordable value has a dark side. Reports have revealed that many dupes and fake goods are unsafe — fake hairdryers and AirPods containing dangerous wiring can cause fires or electric shocks. Worse still, making fake goods may be related to poisonous dyes (染料), forced labour, and even fund organized crime. Therefore, while Gen Z’s value-driven shopping is admirable, it must be balanced with safety and morals. A cheap price is not good value if it comes at the cost of personal safety or human rights. True value lies not in the lowest price, nor in the most expensive brand, but in a purchase (购买) that is safe, purposeful, and personally satisfying. 8. Why do Gen Z cut their spending according to the text? A. To cut daily costs and save money. B. To follow a popular shopping trend. C. To cope with severe economic pressure. D. To make meaningful and worthwhile purchases. 9. What can be a “dupe”? A. A costly high-quality hat. B. An affordable copy bag. C. A cheap poor-quality lipstick. D. An expensive designer watch. 10. What can be concluded about the dupes and fake goods? A. They may harm both users and society. B. They are always a wise choice for Gen Z. C. They have better quality than expensive brands. D. They are mainly produced for young consumers. 11. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. Why Is Gen Z Spending Less on Clothes? B. What Does Gen Z Risk from Fake Goods? C. How Is Gen Z Redefining Value for Money? D. What Does Gen Z Gain from Buying Dupes? D China is preparing one of its most challenging space missions so far — Tianwen-3, a Mars sample return mission. Unlike Mars missions before that only orbited or landed,Tianwen-3 aims to collect rock and soil samples (样本) from the Martian surface and bring them back to Earth. The mission is scheduled for launch around 2028, with the goal of returning at least 500 grams of Martian samples by around 2031. If successful, China will become the first country in human history to complete a Mars sample return mission. With several spacecraft working together, the mission is very complicated, which is far more difficult than returning samples from the Moon. Mars has a thin but unpredictable atmosphere, making landing and takeoff extremely challenging. Moreover, the vast distance means ground control cannot provide real-time help during critical operations. Other key challenges include getting the spacecraft to meet in orbit around Mars, and making sure the returned samples do not bring any harmful material to Earth. The primary goal is to search for signs of past life on Mars, known as biosignatures. Scientists hope to find evidence of ancient microbial (微生物的) life preserved in Martian rocks. Besides, the mission will study Martian geology, climate history, and atmosphere composition. By analyzing samples in advanced Earth laboratories, researchers hope to find out whether Mars was once a planet that could support life. As of 2026, Tianwen-3 has entered its flight model development stage. Chief designer Liu Jizhong announced in March 2026 that key technological breakthroughs have been achieved. The mission is open to international cooperation. If all goes according to plan, the samples will arrive on Earth by 2031, possibly unlocking some of Mars’s deepest secrets. 12. How does the author emphasize the uniqueness of Tianwen-3? A. By giving a definition. B. By quoting an expert. C. By making a comparison. D. By providing an example. 13. What is the main idea of paragraph 2? A. The mission faces various challenges. B. Landing on Mars is harder than on the Moon. C. The returned samples may be harmful to Earth. D. Several spacecraft must work together in the mission. 14. Which of the following is the goal of the Martian mission? A. Finding present life signs. B. Analyzing microbial samples. C. Doing advanced experiments. D. Exploring past living conditions. 15. What can be expected of Tianwen-3 in the future? A. It will develop its engineering model. B. It will come to an end in four years. C. It will uncover all the Martian secrets. D. It will draw global scientific interest. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Why Gratitude Is Good In our daily lives, we often take time to reflect on what we are grateful for. 【答案】4. B 5. B 6. D 7. 根据最后一段“Thanks to her quiet determination, next season the Huskies will be Strong’s team. She is about to become the primary face of the program. (凭借这份不动声色的坚定意志,下个赛季这支Huskies队将成为以斯特朗为核心的队伍。她即将成为这支校队的标志性代表人物。)”、“She hates the thought of making an award acceptance speech. ‘I’m not really focused on the spotlight,’ she says. (她一想到要上台发表获奖感言就十分抵触。她说:‘我从来不在意众人追捧的光环。’)”以及“And she remains a mystery-a superstar who lets her game speak, while keeping everything else to herself. And that’s exactly how she wants it. (她始终让人看不透——一位只用赛场表现说话、对私事绝口不提的巨星,而这正是她想要的状态。)”可知,她为人谦逊且意志坚定。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Yet she does not seek the spotlight. Her talent speaks for itself. 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第二段“The same research shows that 51% of Gen Z are eating out less, 33% are buying fewer clothes, and 29% are reducing beverage (饮料) consumption — not to save money, but afford what they call ‘meaningful buying’.(同样的调查表明51%的Z世代减少外出就餐,33%减少服装购买,29%减少饮品消费——并非为了存钱,而是为了负担他们口中‘有意义的消费’。)”可知,Z世代削减开支是为了进行有意义、值得的消费。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段“One clear example is the popularity of ‘dupes’ — cheaper alternatives (替代品) to expensive products.(一个典型例子就是‘dupes’的流行,即昂贵商品的平价替代品。)”以及“By choosing dupes, they reject the old thought of ‘high price = high value’ and replace it with ‘smart choice = high value’.(通过选择dupes,他们摒弃了‘高价等同于高价值’的传统观念,转而认同‘明智选择才等于高价值’。)”可知,dupe指价格实惠的同款替代品,B选项“An affordable copy bag.(一个价格实惠的仿真包。)”符合平价代替品的特征。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Reports have revealed that many dupes and fake goods are unsafe — fake hairdryers and AirPods containing dangerous wiring can cause fires or electric shocks. Worse still, making fake goods may be related to poisonous dyes (染料), forced labour, and even fund organized crime.(有报告表明许多仿品、假货存在安全隐患,劣质线路会引发火灾、触电;更严重的是,假货生产会使用有毒染料、涉及强迫劳动,甚至为有组织犯罪提供资金。)”可知,假货既会伤害使用者,也会危害社会。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“But Generation Z — those born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s — is rewriting this rule. Gen Z’s spending habits are not a sign of financial irresponsibility; instead, they represent a smarter and more emotionally intelligent approach to value for money.(但出生于90年代中期至21世纪10年代初的Z世代正在改写这一规则。他们的消费习惯并非缺乏理财意识,而是一种更明智、更懂情绪价值的性价比消费方式。)”可知,文章围绕Z世代重新定义金钱价值展开论述;C选项“How Is Gen Z Redefining Value for Money?(Z世代是如何重新定义性价比的?)”能概括全文内容。 D China is preparing one of its most challenging space missions so far — Tianwen-3, a Mars sample return mission. 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15.
