Second, don’t be afraid to share your hobbies with true friends. When you share the joys and challenges of your hobbies with them, you’ll feel encouraged and confident. 44

One rainy afternoon, I found a small dog under a chair near my house. It looked scared and hungry. I decided to take it home, though my parents had always said no to pets.
When I showed the dog to my mom, she said, “We can’t keep it. We’re too busy to care for a pet.” I asked her to let it stay for one night. Finally, she agreed.
I named the dog Lucky. I gave it a warm bath and some food. Lucky moved its tail (尾巴) excitedly. The next morning, my dad noticed Lucky sitting quietly in the corner. “It’s actually well-behaved (温顺的),” he said. Surprisingly, my parents agreed to keep Lucky until we found its owner.
Soon, Lucky became part of our family. It followed me everywhere and even learned to follow simple orders like “sit” and “stay”. One day, I felt sad and Lucky rested its head on my leg. It seemed to understand my feelings.
A week later, we put up “Lost Dog” posters around the neighborhood. No one called. My mom said, “Maybe Lucky was meant to be ours.” I held Lucky in my arm and felt thankful for this unexpected gift.
Lucky taught me that kindness is a way to connect hearts, even between humans and animals.

Does the Dead Sea sound like a place where you’d like to go swimming? What do you expect to see in it? Do you believe there are dead things in it?
The Dead Sea is in southwest Asia. It is about 80 km long, about 18 km wide and about 300 m deep. It also has some other names, such as the Salt Sea, or the East Sea.
Even though it’s called the Dead Sea, it isn’t a sea at all! It’s a lake. Different from other lakes, the Dead Sea is quite a salty lake. It is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. It is so salty that almost no plants or fish can live in it, and only some special microorganisms (微生物) can survive. That’s why it’s called the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea stays quite salty because it gets only a little rain, and so little fresh water gets into it each year.
Don’t let the name make you feel scared. The Dead Sea is a surprising place to visit, and many people go there on holiday. One interesting thing is that anyone can float (漂浮) in the Dead Sea. So if you walk on the beach of the Dead Sea on a warm day, perhaps you can see many people floating in the water. You might even see many of them reading books or magazines in the water.
53. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By asking questions. B. By listing numbers.
C. By giving examples. D. By telling a story.
54. Which of the following about the Dead Sea is TRUE?
A. It is in northwest Asia.
B. It is as clear as seawater.
C. It is too salty for fish to survive.
D. It gets much rain water every year.
