Against the backdrop of a growing water crisis in India,an ancient underground, labyrinth-like(迷宫样的)structure is emerging as one solution to boosting its shrinking reserves-一stepwells.The complex, terraced(梯田状的)water storage was once the lifeblood of Indian communities-developed centuries ago to store and access water for drinking, agriculture and industry, and it also functioned as a local gathering spot. Today, many of these architectural wonders have been damaged-victims of ignoring, pollution and a rapidly urbanizing India. But Indian environmentalist Arun Krishnamurthy, has made it his new mission to tap into this technology of the past,to secure water for its future. For almost 20 years,Krishnamurthy has worked to bring India's degraded bodies of water back to life through his organization Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI). EFI has restored 657 water bodies across 19 states-from lakes to ponds, and most recently stepwells."Stepwell restoration is the next big implementation challenge that I would like to add to EFI's responsibilities because we have a greater responsibility now for protecting the historical heritage, which is evidence of human intelligence,"Krishnamurthy says. EFI already draws on the stepwell design principles of its ancestors to guide its lake and pond restoration efforts."They include the engineering, land use, understanding the water flows, the storage parameters ()How was the embankment laid?Where was the palm tree planted? How was the canal cut?"Krishnamurthy says,"So we take lessons from the past, and adapting them to the present-day challenges is what we are implementing." Despite his extensive experience in recovering freshwater bodies,Krishnamurthy says stepwells are uniquely demanding.Restoring these ancient structures calls for specialized traditional knowledge and craftsmanship一and even after they are revived, vandalism(f破坏行 makes their upkeep an ongoing struggle.Krishnamurthy says these stepwells will need public responsibility to safeguard their future. 24.What can we learn about stepwells from paragraph 1? A.They were designed to deal with industrial waste. B.They served multiple purposes in ancient India. C.They are built on the ground for easy access. D.They are freshly constructed water projects. 【高二英语第4页(共10页)】 25.What does Krishnamurthy think of restoring stepwells? A.It is costly but worthwhile. B.It is easy with modern tools. C.It is based on lake restoration. D.It is a duty and a challenge. 26.What is the author's purpose of writing paragraph 4? A.To describe the structure of old stepwells. B.To stress the necessity of water protection. C.To show the value of ancient stepwell wisdom. D.To explain the difficulty in restoring stepwells. 27.What is needed to protect stepwells in the long run according to Krishnamurthy? A.Community involvement. B.Steady urbanization. C.More government funding. D.Modern engineering. C Search online and you will find countless DIYbio trends that promise healthier aging, from using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to sleeping under red lights. But research from Tufts University points to a much simpler lifestyle change that appears to work:eating slightly fewer calories. The findings come from CALERIE,short for Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy. In the study,143 participants tried to reduce their calorie intake by 25%for two years, while 75 others continued eating normally as the control group. Researchers found notable improvements among the participants who reduced calories. Many shifted their diets away from fats and toward more protein and carbohydrates.Although the group achieved only about a 12%calorie reduction instead of the targeted 25%,they still experienced significant declines in blood pressure,LDL cholesterol, and insulin levels compared with the control group.A paper released earlier this year found that lowering calorie intake did not reduce the overall nutritional quality of the participants'diets. "The most exciting part is that we saw these benefits with only a moderate level of restriction that's feasible for most people. It doesn't have to take extreme measures. For some people, just skipping a large daily sugary coffee drink can do the trick,"says Sai Krupa Das,one of the researchers. Researchers are still unable to understand exactly why calorie restriction boosts health. One theory is that eating less helps the body generate energy more efficiently while producing fewer reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules (that can damage cells and contribute to diseases ranging from cancer to Parkinson's disease. One test confirmed that the participants in the calorie restriction group had lower levels of these molecules than the control group. The CALERIE project is still ongoing.Researchers still do not know whether calorie restriction works best as a permanent lifestyle or as a shorter-term intervention."I think the follow-up was necessary given such promising results in the primary study, and it is crucial to see how things play out over time,Das says. 【高二英语第5页(共10页)】 28.What is the effective way to slow aging according to the research from Tufts University? A.Receiving oxygen treatment. B.Using red lights while sleeping. C.Trying various DIYbio methods. D.Cutting down food calories a little. 29.What do we know about the calorie-cutting participants? A.They took in much less protein. B.They quitted before the deadline. C.Their health indicators turned better generally. D.Their diets were richer than the control group's. 30.What does the underlined word "feasible"in paragraph 4 mean? A.Practical. B.Strange. C.Suspicious. D.Predictable. 31.Why do researchers carry out further research? A.To figure out new approaches to restricting calories. B.To explore long-term effects of calorie restriction. C.To explain why calorie restriction improves health. D.To detect how reactive oxygen species harm health. 0 Ants that consume a sugary treat mixed with caffeine become noticeably better at finding their way back to it.A new study, published in Science, focused on Argentine ants,a widespread attacking species.Efforts to control them typically rely on poisonous bait () but these strategies often fall short. The colony of ants may ignore the bait or abandon it before it spreads widely. The research team from the University of Regensburg explored whether caffeine, which is already known to enhance learning in bees, could help ants better remember bait locations and lead more nestmates to them. To investigate this idea, the scientists designed a controlled experiment using different caffeine levels.142 ants crossed a small toy drawbridge onto a test surface, which consisted of an A4 sheet placed over acrylic ()There,they encountered a drop of sugar solution containing 0 ppm,25 ppm,250 ppm,or 2,000 ppm of caffeine. The team tracked each ant's movement with an automated system, measuring both travel time and how direct their paths were.Ants that received only sugar showed little improvement over time, indicating they were not learning the reward's location effectively. For ants exposed to 25 ppm of caffeine, foraging (time decreased by 28 percent with each visit. At 250 ppm,the improvement reached 38 percent. The highest caffeine level did not produce the same benefit. The improvement was not due to increased speed.Instead, caffeinated ants followed more direct routes, suggesting stronger focus and better spatial memory.Their pace remained unchanged across all doses, but their paths became less winding at the lower and intermediate levels of caffeine. 【高二英语第6页(共10页)】 The findings suggest that caffeine could play a role in improving pest control strategies for Argentine ants.By helping ants learn bait locations more quickly and bring back more nestmates, caffeine could increase how effectively poison spreads through a colony before the ants detect it.However, the researchers caution that more work is needed before applying this approach in real-world settings. 32.What inspired the research team to conduct the experiment? A.The desire to stop ant attack. B.The impact of caffeine on bees. C.The need to increase ants'speed. D.The failure of their using previous baits. 33.What can be said about the ants exposed to 250 ppm of caffeine? A.They increased their movement speed. B.They were unable to return to their nests. C.They acquired positional memory effectively. D.They required additional duration for foraging. 34.How did caffeine affect the ants'movement? A.It significantly increased their pace. B.It encouraged them to explore new areas. C.It brought them more food choices. D.It helped them avoid winding routes. 35.What can be the best title for the text? A.Caffeine Helping Ants Find Food Faster B.Effective Poisonous Bait Attracting Ants C.Caffeine's Role in Controlling Ants'Memory D.A New Way to Study Ants'Foraging Behavior 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余 选项。 How to Break Free from Guilt I have missed a friend's milestone birthday, haven't returned my dad's phone call, and won't be able to make it to my kid's marching band event.36 This complex, painful emotion can motivate you to make positive changes, such as reducing your carbon footprint or repairing a relationship. However, guilt can go too far or be unhealthy, and even when it serves a purpose,it can cause unnecessary anxiety and anger.Sometimes, when you do something that makes you feel guilty, you tend to blame it on your character weaknesses. This tendency to overgeneralize consists of inaccurate perspectives that can have a negative effect on your mental health. 37 For example, acknowledging that you forgot a friend's birthday is vastly different from telling yourself that you are a bad friend. 38 Guilt is a sticky emotion that can become a habit, but you can challenge that 【高二英语第7页(共10页)】 feeling by quieting your inner critic.Start by asking if the expectations you set for yourself are realistic or fair. You can tell yourself repeatedly that it's fine and normal that others will be disappointed. You can also try talking to yourself as if you were comforting a friend, reframing the situation through a more tolerant perspective.Instead of saying "I messed it up”,you might say,.“39” The key is not to beat yourself up,but to think of a way to move forward rather than living in the past.40 We are having a wonderful breakfast, and beforehand,I will run and get her a bunch of flowers from the supermarket. A.I couldn't do it better next time. B.This didn't go as I intended, but I tried my best. C.Another powerful strategy is to practice self-forgiveness. D.Tomorrow,I'm meeting the friend whose birthday I forgot. E.If you're anything like me,guilt can be an everyday experience. F.Nevertheless, you'd better choose to forget anything insignificant. G.Therefore,it is essential to focus on your actions rather than your character. 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填人空白处的最佳选项。 Last year,a severe illness struck me,leaving me unable to handle basic daily routines.
