Have you ever found that you feel happier after helping others? Volunteering is not only helpful to people in need, but also good for your own mental health. Every year, Volunteers’ Week is celebrated from June 1 to June 7. It is a great chance for us to learn about the benefits of helping others.
What is volunteering?
Volunteering means you spend your time, energy or skills helping others without getting any money or rewards. Every year, millions of people volunteer in many different ways. For example, you can raise money for charities, work in local community gardens or parks, or help your neighbors carry shopping things home. The theme of this year’s Volunteers’ Week is “Celebrate and Inspire”. It shows the different volunteers and various ways of volunteering.
How is volunteering good for me?
Susan Albers, a psychologist, says volunteering can reduce stress and help you feel more positive about your life. When you are kind and helpful to others, it activates the reward (奖励) area of your brain and releases (释放) happy chemicals like dopamine (多巴胺). Volunteering also brings many other advantages, such as feeling part of a community, making friends and learning skills.
How can I become a volunteer?
There are many easy ways to start volunteering. Albers advises us to choose meaningful volunteer work. If you like sports, you can help teach young players in your sports club. If you care about environmental protection, you can organize litter picks or beach clean-ups. You can also look for volunteer chances in local libraries, community centers or schools. Remember to ask your parents or guardians for permission first. You can even invite your friends and family to join you. Albers says volunteering with family or friends is a wonderful way to improve your mental health. It is free, easy for everyone to do, and it does not need much time or special skills.

A. By giving an example. B. By telling a story.

When terrible natural disasters come, many people may feel nervous and scared. They even don’t know what they should do. So it is necessary for us to learn some useful safety knowledge to protect ourselves.
Thunderstorms often happen in summer. If you stay indoors, remember not to stand near windows or use electric machines. Taking a bath is also dangerous. When you are outside, never hide under tall trees. Scientists warn that lightning may hurt people under tall plants. In a word, you should stay in low and open places quietly.
Besides thunderstorms, floods are also common. Once a flood comes, move to higher places right away. Don’t walk or drive through rushing water. Try your best to carry enough food and clean water with you.
In fact, nature has its own temper. As long as we learn more safety skills and stay calm, we can keep safe when disasters come.
61. When do thunderstorms often happen? Find the sentence with the Object Clause in Para.1.
62. Why can’t people hide under tall trees when a thunderstorm comes?
