After many years of work, Hu and his team made five new kinds of rice seeds. They can grow well even in dry weather and heavy rains.
The harder task was making the local farmers believe and accept these “foreign” seeds. Hu decided to demonstrate the advantages. He used the same way to plant local rice and hybrid rice and then compared the two. The results showed that the hybrid rice seeds could produce two to three times more rice! The local farmers were so excited!
“Good seeds aren’t enough. Farmers must know how to grow them,” Hu said. He taught them carefully. When farmers nearby had problems, he rode over on his motorbike. If they were far away, he helped them by phone.
Hu has missed many important family moments. He sees his family only once a year. He wasn’t there when his mother passed away, and he wasn’t there when his grandson was born. But he stays strong and keeps working. He hopes to return home in two or three years, but only after he teaches others to continue his work.

Tsinghua University wrote about his death and described him as “immortal (不朽的)” for his influence on science and education will last forever.
Born in 1922 in Hefei, Anhui Province, Yang moved to Beijing with his family in 1929. His university began at the National Southwestern Associated (联合的) University in 1938, followed by a master (硕士)’s degree from Tsinghua University in 1944. The next year, he went to the United States for further study, getting a PhD (博士学位) from the University of Chicago in 1948.
The year 1957 saw Yang and his partner Li Zhengdao win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Their discovery about how very small particles (粒子) behave changed scientists’ understanding of particle physics. Together with Robert Mills, Yang developed the “Yang-Mills theory (理论)”, which became a key to explain the basic (基本的) forces of the universe (宇宙).

Zu Chongzhi was a great mathematician and astronomer (天文学家) during the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
Zu Chongzhi’s main contribution to math is the calculation (计算) of pi. Records show that Zu worked out the numerical value of pi— between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927, which was the most advanced achievement in the world at that time. It wasn’t until the 15th century that someone else surpassed (超过) his precision. Some people even wanted to name pi after Zu as a way to honor him. What’s truly amazing is that Zu did all this calculation even before the invention of the abacus—he used wooden counting sticks!
Zu Chongzhi and his son, Zu Geng, discovered how to calculate the volume of a sphere (球体). Zu Chongzhi’s book, Zhui Shu, was used as a math textbook in the Tang Dynasty.

Dear classmates,
Let me introduce Wang Yongzhi, one of the four honorary recipients of the Medal of the Republic in China, 1.
