Long ago, before clocks were invented, people used simple things from daily life to know how much time passed. Let’s explore some!
An incense (香) stick

A cup of tea
“一盏茶” was about 15 minutes long. The teacup came with a lid (盖子) and a small plate so people could drink slowly and keep tea leaves out of their mouths. The time it took for a cup of tea to be served and cooled down changed with the weather. In summer, cooling the tea took about 15 minutes, while in winter, it was faster — sometimes just 10 minutes.
A pot of wine
Finishing a pot of wine took about one shichen, which equated (等同于) to two hours in modern times.
A meal
A meal was about half a shichen long. But in modern times, people usually spend around half an hour for a meal.

Passage 2
Rules are everywhere! They tell us how to behave (行为). When we were kids, our parents told us to “be polite and honest”. At school, we should always “arrive on time” and “raise our hand to speak.” There are even rules for having fun—every sport has rules.
But some rules develop over time and vary (变化) across countries, such as traffic rules. In 1868, the first traffic lights appeared in England. Later, in 1914, the first electric traffic lights were introduced in the United States. These developments helped establish (建立) traffic rules to manage the growing number of cars. By the early 20th century, driving rules became more common and widely followed. In most countries, such as China, Germany and Canada, people drive on the right-hand side of the road. In other countries, such as the UK, Australia and India, people drive on the left. However, the aim (目标) of traffic rules is the same everywhere: to keep people safe and the traffic moving.

Passage 3
Hawaii’s regular (规律的) sunshine, short rain showers and clean air come together to create some of the planet’s best conditions for viewing rainbows. Rainbows are seen so often here that a University of Hawaii professor calls the state the “rainbow capital of the world”.
“Hawaii has maybe the best rainbows on the planet,” said Steven Businger, professor of atmospheric (大气的) sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
He has even created an app called RainbowChase to help people find rainbows in Hawaii.
Rainbows form when drops of rain refract (折射) sunlight into different colors. The brighter the sun, the clearer the rainbow.
Hawaii’s winds bring many small showers with enough blue sky between them for the sun to shine through. Conditions are best during the rainy season from October through April.
Visitors should look for rainbows when it’s both sunny and raining at the same time. Rainbows will appear opposite the sun. They will seem larger and higher in the sky in the early morning and late afternoon, when the sun is lower on the horizon (地平线).
Rainbows are popular symbols of island life. Pictures of them can be seen on buildings and buses, and even on vehicle license plates
“They cause us to stand still (静止) and for a moment, forget about the past and the future,” Businger said.
There are about 20 names for rainbows in the Hawaiian language, including different words for different kinds of rainbows.
An expert (专家) said rainbows are considered a symbol of Kane, one of the four main gods in Hawaiian tradition. The closer you get to a rainbow, the more likely (可能的) you are to meet a supernatural force (力量) or a powerful person, he said.
9. Why does a professor call Hawaii the “rainbow capital of the world”?
A. Because Hawaii has the most colors in its rainbows.
B. Because rainbows are seen very often in Hawaii.

C. Rainbows will always appear when it’s both sunny and raining at the same time.
D. Rainbows are popular symbols of island life and a symbol of Kane.

Passage 4
Impossible—I’m possible
“Nothing is impossible; the word itself says ‘I’m possible’” Audrey Hepburn, the British actress and star of the silver screen, said this. However, doubts (怀疑) and fears (恐惧) often hold us back. How can we face them and succeed?
The runner Su Bingtian gives an excellent answer to this question. The young man began his sporting life in 2006. At that time, no one from Asia had ever run the 100m race in less than 10 seconds. Su trained hard and quickly became one of the fastest runners in Asia. In 2011, he ran the race in 10.16 seconds.
However, Su wasn’t satisfied. To run in under 10 seconds, in 2014, he changed his starting leg. This was a very risky decision. He had to start from zero. At first, he was slower than before. Also, he was 25 years old. At such an age, many runners choose to stop running. People doubted his decision. However, Su fought his fears and became a sporting hero.
In 2015, he clocked 9.99 seconds and made history. In 2021, he finished in 9.83 seconds at the Tokyo Olympics. He also became the first Chinese athlete (运动员) to run in the Olympic 100m final.
Su Bingtian has told youngsters (年轻人), “Never let your age hold you back. Have a try and try harder. I believe you can write your own story.” Nothing is impossible as long as you try and stick to (坚持) it. Everyone can be a Su-perman!

Should kids get paid for doing chores (家务)?
Different families have different ways of handling chores and pocket money. Some parents believe paying children for doing chores teaches important lessons, while others think chores should be done without rewards (奖励) because they believe helping around the house is just what kids should do as part of the family. ___17___
One common way is to pay kids for each chore — like $1 for washing the dishes. Parents who use this method say it teaches kids the value of working for money, but some notice that children may only help when paid.
___18___ This makes chores feel less like work. But kids might still do chores just for money, not because they want to.
Some parents don’t pay kids for chores because they believe it might make kids focus more on rewards than on their sense of duty. To them, chores are something kids need to do as part of the family. But these parents might still give kids pocket money — just not for chores. ___19___ However, if they do this, children might not see the connection between work and money.
The middle ground (折中的办法) is paying only for bigger, more challenging (有挑战性的) chores, like washing the car, but not for small daily chores, like making the bed. This way, children can not only learn that helping the family is important, but also realize that extra (额外的) work can bring extra rewards.
___20___. If one way doesn’t work, try another until you find what works.
A. They want kids to learn how to handle (处理) money wisely without connecting money to housework.
B. Let’s see how these different ideas work in real life.
C. So paying kids for chores is a good way to teach them responsibility.
D. In a word, no single chore-money rule is perfect.
E. Another way is to give pocket money weekly or monthly if children finish all chores.
B 18. E 19. A 20. D

“tried surfing”与“wasn’t very good at it”前后存在让步关系,although“虽然、尽管”符合逻辑。
根据“water was getting warmer…waves were getting bigger”可知,天气异常,strange“奇怪的”符合语境。
searching for“寻找”、laughing at“嘲笑”、asking for“请求”,语义不通。
根据“vacation was coming to an end”可知,假期结束通常让人难过,sad“难过的”符合不舍的心情。
Bye-Bye, Groaning (呻吟声) Beds and Chairs!
I still remember the last day of my high school military training. I sat down on my bed — and CRACK! The wooden bed board ___31___ (break) in half! My face turned tomato red as I sat ___32___ the middle of the mess.
Well, that bed was too weak, clearly ___33___ I was also too heavy. At 1.72 meters tall, I weighed 95 kilograms. I never liked exercise. I spent all my time at my desk either doing homework or reading books. To make matters worse, my parents often cooked ___34___ (I) meat-heavy meals. They hoped I’d become muscular But instead of hearing “Wow!” all I heard was the groaning of chairs and beds.
Now, I’m afraid more beds and chairs might be groaning. Over half of adults and nearly one in five schoolchildren in China are overweight or obese Many people say they don’t have time ___35___ (exercise). They are also ordering more takeout (外卖食物) and eating too much without realizing it.
But as I always say, being busy is no excuse for not exercising. After breaking that poor bed, I ___36___ (know) I had to change. I didn’t have time for the gym, so I made small ___37___ (change) in my daily life. Sometimes, I cycle the ten kilometers home after work. Other times, I get off the bus early and walk the rest of the way. On weekends, I clean my apartment. I also eat more ___38___ (healthy). Guess what? I’m now 21 kilograms ___39___ (light) than my high school self! I no longer have to worry about breaking ____40____ bed when I travel!
Are you carrying extra weight like I once did? Maybe it’s time to make some lifestyle (生活方式) changes. Don’t wait until you break a bed!
31. broke
32. in 33. and
34. me 35. to exercise
36. knew 37. changes
38. healthily
39. lighter
40. a
固定搭配in the middle of 表示“在……中间”,因此填介词in。
【33题详解】
句意:很明显那张床不结实,而且我体重也太重了。前后两个分句“床不结实”和“我太重”为并列递进关系,需并列连词and连接。
【34题详解】
句意:更糟的是,父母经常给我做肉类居多的饭菜。根据固定搭配cook sb. sth.“给某人做饭”,动词cook后接人称代词宾格,I 的宾格形式是me。
【35题详解】
句意:很多人说他们没有时间锻炼。固定结构have time to do sth.
“I had to change”提示主句时态为一般过去时,know的过去式为knew。

Grandparents Day
Grandparents Day, celebrated on the first Sunday after Labour Day (first Monday in September) in the US, did not start as a way to sell cards and flowers. It is said that it had something to do with a determined (坚定的) woman, Marian McQuade.
McQuade’s interest in connecting generations (一代人) began when she was a child visiting her grandmother on the family farm. After chores were done, she would visit elderly neighbours with her grandmother, often taking along food and gifts. These experiences, along with her close relationship with her grandmother, planted the seeds for a lifetime of helping the elderly.
When McQuade grew up, she got married and became a housewife. She took care of her kids and had many grandchildren. She believed that spending time with your elderly loved ones was very important and wanted to create a holiday where families could enjoy themselves together. In the early 1970s, she started her journey to make the holiday a reality (现实).
She kept calling and writing letters to the local and state leaders until she finally got attention in 1973 from Senator (参议员) Jennings Randolph. He introduced to the Senate the idea of making Grandparents Day a national holiday. His plan fell through in the Senate, but McQuade didn’t get discouraged (气馁的). After years of efforts, her hard work paid off on August 3rd in 1978, when the then president officially (正式地) made Grandparents Day a national holiday. He also stated (陈述) how important it was to honour grandparents and understand the value of family.
Although Grandparents Day began in the US, it is now celebrated in many other countries. In Germany, Grandparents Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in October. In Mexico, it is on August 28th, when children often prepare a special meal for their grandparents or give gifts to them.

Dear classmates,
In public places like parks and streets, we often see rude behaviours. Some throw rubbish everywhere, some make loud noise indoors, others break traffic rules or cut in line. These acts pollute the environment, disturb others, bring traffic risks and break public order.
To make a change, let’s start with small actions. First, always put trash in bins. Second, keep quiet in public. Also, wait for green lights when crossing streets. We should always be polite to others.
Building a civilized environment needs everyone’s effort. Let’s start with small things around us and encourage more people to join us. Together, we can make our society better!
Sincerely,
Social and Public Relations Club

An incense (香) stick
The most common way to measure (测) time in ancient China was by burning incense sticks, called “一炷香” in Chinese. It worked day and night and was easy to carry and simple to make. An incense stick usually took about half an hour to burn.

Can you imagine a world without rules? Surely it will be difficult and dangerous for everyone. To stay safe, we should follow the rules.
5. Rules are everywhere because _________.
A. they arrive on time
B. they tell us to be polite and honest
C. they tell us how to behave

C. To keep people safe and traffic moving. D. To show the development of countries.
C. Because Hawaii invented the word “rainbow”.
D. Because Hawaii has the biggest rainbows.
10. What can we learn about rainbows from the passage?
A. Rainbows don’t form when drops of rain refract sunlight into different colors.
B. Visitors can hardly see rainbows during the rainy season.
C. Rainbows will always appear when it’s both sunny and raining at the same time.
D. Rainbows are popular symbols of island life and a symbol of Kane.
11. What can we infer (推断) from the underlined sentence?
A. Rainbows are very important in Hawaiian culture.
B. Hawaiians don’t like rainbows very much.
C. The Hawaiian language has too many words.
D. Hawaiians are afraid of rainbows.
12. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. How to take good pictures of rainbows.
B. The history of rainbow research in Hawaii.
C. Why Hawaii is a great place for viewing rainbows.
D. How to use the RainbowChase app.
13. How does the writer begin this passage?
