Slides are simple but always fun. All you need to do is climb up to the top and slide down. But did you know that there is science behind this simple playground equipment (设备)?
①You climb up to the slide and sit down. You are sitting still. No, not yet. Things stay still unless something makes them move. It is Newton’s first law. So you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down.
②Now you are sliding down. Do you feel you are slowing down a bit? When two things rub (摩擦) against each other, they cause friction (摩擦力). Without friction, you will slide down faster and faster to the bottom.
Isaac Newton said that what goes up must come down. Slides work because of gravity. But that is not all.
③At the bottom of the slide, you come to a full stop. Your feet touch the ground and add extra friction. Newton’s first law also says moving things keep moving unless something makes them stop. So, if you do not use your feet, you’ll fly off the slide.
46. Which picture explains why you slow down a bit when sliding down?
A. B. C. D.
47. If you do not use your feet at the bottom of the slide, you will ________.
A. stay still B. stop immediately C. add extra friction D. slide uncontrollably
48. The writer mainly tells us ________.
A. fun with a slide B. secrets of gravity
C. Newton’s first law D. science behind a slide

The first time I ate Sichuan hot pot was in Changchun in northeastern China. I had only been in China for a week when Rui, my new Chinese friend, asked me, “Have you ever had hot pot?”
“No, what is it?” I answered.
“It’s good. You’ll like it. See you tonight at 7?”
And so it was decided.
The hot pot restaurant was popular in the city. We found a table at the far end of a room. Soon, a large hot pot arrived. The hot pot itself had two sides. On one side was a cloudy white broth (肉汤). The broth on the other side was covered with bright red oil.
“Is that red pepper oil?” I asked.
“Yes,” Rui answered.
“You should try it. If you like spicy (辛辣的) food, you’ll really enjoy it.”
Rui picked up a thin slice of lamb with his chopsticks and then put it in the red broth. In seconds, it was cooked, and he put it on my small plate.
“If it’s too spicy, you can use this other broth—it’s not spicy at all because it doesn’t have any peppers in it.” Rui pointed to the cloudy white broth on the other side of the pot.
“No,” I said, “this is fine.”
But it was more than fine: It was spicy, mouth-numbing, and amazing. I ate and ate until the restaurant was almost closed. I just couldn’t get enough of it.
For hundreds of years, millions of Chinese people have felt the same way: They just can’t get enough hot pot. It has always been their favourite food.
What makes Sichuan hot pot different from other hot pots is the use of huajiao. It is said that the spicy food helps people get through Sichuan’s hot and wet weather.
Nearly as famous as the Sichuan hot pot is the Beijing hot pot. The Beijing hot pot uses lamb and many of the same ingredients (配料) as the Sichuan hot pot, but has a lighter taste. The Northeast Chinese hot pot usually contains pork and pickled cabbage, while the Guangdong hot pot uses a chicken or a fish broth, and is known for its wide range of ingredients. In fact, while lamb hot pot is quite popular, almost any kind of ingredient can be found in hot pot cooking. There are as many kinds of hot pots as there are cooks.
In China, people like to joke that there is no problem that a hot pot can’t solve. The fire from a hot pot can melt just about any icy disagreement and warm just about any heart. Over a hot pot, people can talk and share not just food, but friendship. While the food may soon be forgotten, these friendships stay with us forever. Even today, when I think of hot pot, my friend Rui’s face immediately comes to mind, and I remember all the good times I spent with him.
49. What does the underlined word “it” in the passage mean?
A. Expecting to try hot pot next week.
B. Seeing an old friend in Changchun.
C. Going out to eat hot pot at 7 that evening.
D. Recommending a well-known restaurant.
50. What kind of pot did the writer try according to the passage?

51. What does “There are as many kinds of hot pots as there are cooks.” probably mean?
A. People can make hot pots as they want.
B. Making hot pots is easy for most cooks.
C. Hot pots come in different types in China.
D. Each cook has different ways to cook hot pots.
52. What is the best title for this passage?

Miss Martha Meacham kept the little bakery on the corner. At forty, she had two false teeth and a sympathetic heart. She had two thousand dollars in the bank. Many people, who were not as good as Miss Martha, had married.
A customer came in two or three times a week, and soon Miss Martha began to take an interest in him. He was a quiet, middle-aged man, wearing glasses and a brown beard. ①________ His clothes were always old and patched (缝补的). But he looked tidy and had very good manners. He always bought two loaves of stale (不新鲜的) bread. Fresh bread was five cents a loaf, while stale loaves were two for five. ②________ Once, while serving him, Miss Martha saw a red and brown mark on the customer’s fingers. ③________ She was sure then that he was an artist and very poor. No doubt he lived in an attic, where he painted pictures, ate stale bread and thought of the good things to eat in Miss Martha’s bakery. ④________
Miss Martha’s heart was a sympathetic one. To check if she was right about his job, she took a painting from her room and put it behind the bread counter. No artist could fail to notice it.
Two days later, the customer came in.
“Two loaves of stale bread, if you please.”
“You have here a fine picture, madam,” he said while she was packing the bread.
“Yes?” said Miss Martha, pleased with her cleverness. “Do you really think it is a good picture?”
“The palace,” said the customer, “is not in good drawing. The perspective (透视画法) of it is not true. Goodbye, madam.”
He took his bread, bowed and hurried out.
Yes, he must be an artist. How gently and kindly his eyes shone behind his glasses! To be able to judge perspective at a quick look—and to live on stale bread! But talented people often have to go through difficulties before they succeed.
What a thing it would be for art and perspective if genius were supported by two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery and a sympathetic heart—But these were daydreams.
Now, when he came, he would often chat for a while with Miss Martha. He kept on buying stale bread, never a cake, never a pie. She thought he began to look thinner and lost heart. She wanted to provide something good for him, but she was afraid of hurting him.
She knew the pride of artists.
(To be continued)
53. We can put the sentence “Never did he call for anything but stale bread.” in ________.

A. To sell the painting to help the poor artist.
B. To test whether the customer was an artist.
C. To show her taste and personal art collection.
D. To decorate the shop and attract more customers.
55. That Miss Martha had a “sympathetic” heart means she was kind to someone ________.

C. who achieved success D. who laughed at others
56. How does the writer mainly develop the story?

①To get a better idea of how far bees usually travel, researchers at Penn State worked to develop a way to follow bees. Bees are usually studied in a lab or nearby. But the researchers wanted to develop a system that could work anywhere and be used by anyone. Let’s see what they have done.
②Researchers worked with engineers to create “AprilTags”, which are similar to QR codes (二维码). These codes are easy for cameras to find and read, even when the light isn’t good. They are smaller than a coin, and can be stuck on the back of bees without causing any harm.
③But sticking thousands of “AprilTags” was a lot of work. The researchers mainly studied young bees, tagging (贴标签) 600 of them every two weeks. Over the spring and summer, the researchers tagged over 32,000 bees spread across six different hives (蜂箱). By putting a camera powered by the sun and a tiny computer above the door to each hive, they could follow the tagged bees. They could show when each bee left the hive and when it returned.
④The new system gave the researchers a lot of information about the bees’ flying. They found that most trips outside the hive lasted 1 to 4 minutes. They thought these short trips were used for quick jobs like checking the weather. Even longer trips were shorter than 20 minutes. But about 34% of the bees took trips that lasted longer than two hours. The researchers said this could show that the bees were making longer trips to collect food. And they noticed that the bees spent more time out collecting when there were fewer flowers around.
⑤All these findings help us understand bees better. Bees are known to communicate with each other about where to collect food through a special “dance”. Now the researchers want to see how their new findings match up with the special dance. They plan to teach beekeepers and other researchers how to use their system.
57. What are the advantages of “AprilTags” according to the passage?
①Easy to read. ②Safe to bees. ③Cheap to buy. ④Small in size. ⑤Shiny in the dark.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③⑤ D. ②④⑤
58. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Bees change their flying time according to the environment.
B. Short trips are used for dangerous tasks like checking weather.
C. About 66% of the bees take short trips between 1 and 4 minutes.
D. Young bees are chosen because they use the special dance better.
59. What is the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1,②=Paragraph 2…)
A. ①②/③/④⑤ B. ①/②③④/⑤ C. ①/②③/④⑤ D. ①②③/④/⑤
60. What will the researchers do next with their new findings?
A. Tag more young bees every two weeks.
B. Study how bees communicate with each other.
C. Compare the special “dance” with their findings.
D. Teach beekeepers how to take better care of bees.

DIY needs creative minds; creative people often find special ways to express their love for life through handmade works.
Daniella Hudson grew up in a creative family where her parents made all their furniture. “They didn’t do this because we couldn’t afford bought furniture,” she explains. “They just enjoyed creating things with their own hands.” This family environment deeply influenced young Daniella.
When Daniella was ten, a school trip to a design show opened her eyes to the wonderful world of furniture design. “I saw so many beautiful tables and chairs in different styles there,” she recalls. From that day on, she decided to follow her parents’ path and began making furniture herself. She learned skills by helping her parents and watching online videos.
Her first project was a table inspired (赋予灵感) by a 1920s design she saw at the show. Although this style wasn’t popular anymore, Daniella felt proud of her workmanship. Later, she even repainted it because the original wood color was too dark.
Daniella started selling her creations at a local market, which helped her get customer feedback and enjoy fresh air. However, as her online business grew rapidly, she had to stop market sales because it took all her spare time. Interestingly, the market closed down soon after.
Recently, an exciting opportunity came when a design show organizer who had bought her furniture online invited her to participate (参加). “I couldn’t believe a thousand visitors would see my work!” Daniella says. Though her traditional style differed from modern designs in magazines, the show brought her many orders and a bright future.

B
A. B. C. D.

C. Hot Pots Fix Everything D. Stomachs Satisfied, Hearts Warmed

【答案】57. B 58. A 59. B 60. C

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。

Dear all,
It’s my great honour to share my special experience here
Last term, my classmate Lucy fell ill and missed many lessons. Seeing her worried face, I decided to help. Every evening after school, I’d send her my notes and explain difficult parts patiently. At first, I thought it was just a small thing. But weeks later, Lucy caught up with the class and thanked me with tears in her eyes.
This experience made me realize even small help can light up someone’s world. It also taught me to be more caring. Now, I often offer a hand to people in need without hesitation.
