By the time I took Kicker home,I was living in a van(旅居房车),so he was thrown into van
life from day one.At this point,I knew how to make him an outgoing and adaptable dog,and my
life was far more adventurous than it had been...
Right out of the gate,I took him to ski touring, which is a lot like cross-country skiing but in
wilder terrain. At first,Kicker would just stay nestled (in my jacket, but as he got stronger,
he would run on his own for a little while before I carried him again.
We also went on some winter camping adventures in the high peaks of the Uinta Mountains,
and we tried snow kiting. He ran around while I skied. He learned to speed-fly and kiteboard. One
time he vomited (all over the new cushions on my bed.Boy,did that stay smelly for days!
Still, living in a van with a dog was great. With each new day,he got stronger and more
independent.
I had dreamed of visiting Alaska since I was a child,so being able to share that trip with
Kicker felt incredible. There's something to be said about shared experiences and how they help
develop a strong bond.Together we kayaked, snowmobiled, and even ended up exploring deep
blue ice caves in Worthington Glacier.Kicker learned to come snowboarding with me in the
mountains of Alaska. He would hike part of the way,and I would carry him the rest.I would
always let him run next to me as I boarded, but I usually ended up putting him on my shoulders
for the rest of the ride down-he had grown far too big to fit in my jacket.
Having a dog has been one of the most rewarding things in my life. For me,it's about the
time spent together exploring, sharing experiences, working through challenging situations,
snuggling, and ultimately taking care of one another.

A quiet AI revolution (is unfolding in China's countryside. In provinces like Jilin,
Yunnan and Hubei, farmers are turning to AI to save their crops from flooding and disease.China
is showing the world a different roadmap of AI's path forward.
Free AI services in China fuel mass application.DeepSeek's integration (into WeChat
caused a traffic surge,absorbed by Tencent's Yuanbao,whose DAU(Daily Active Users )jumped
20 times in two months.AI now rapidly integrates into daily life, reaching vast rural (
populations at scale.
By making AI tools free and accessible through platforms like WeChat,China has opened the
floodgates to grassroots adoption.Chinese companies have focused on getting big numbers. And
the number is surprising:Nearly 300 million farmers, representing 20%of the national population,
are potential AI users.
In one Hubei village, weeks of heavy rain threatened to destroy rice fields.Consequently,
farmers turned to Yuanbao. The chatbot recommended building river banks and switching to
high-ridge planting-the advice arrives instantly, tailored to specific problems and images
uploaded by farmers with little formal education.
AI is integrated in everyday life in China. For Chinese farmers, the benefits are real and
immediate. For many,AI is no longer a futuristic idea but a daily tool. While China's rural AI
surge is impressive,it faces challenges of its own.AI researchers found that most farmers didn't
know how to raise useful questions to AI chatbots unless prompted by local officials.Educational
gaps remain a challenge:Even when farmers receive answers, they might not understand the
technical terms involved.Without a closed loop of understanding and action, the benefits of AI
can't be fully realized.
Researchers also stress that making AI useful for the farmers as well as elders will require
more than a stylish UX and bigger models. It urgently demands simplified responses, voice
interfaces and solutions tailored to real-world conditions.
28.What resulted from DeepSeek's integration into WeChat?
A.Free AI services in China became accessible.
B.Tencent's Yuanbao saw a rapid increase in users.
C.Farmers in Hubei doubled their rice production.
D.The number of WeChat users dropped significantly.
29.What do the underlined words"opened the floodgates to"in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Blocked the way of.
B.Increased the cost of.
C.Tested the strict limits of.
D.Allowed widespread entry of.
30.What will the researchers most probably do next according to the last paragraph?
A.Develop larger AI models.
B.Expand AI access to more cities.
C.Provide simplified practical guidance.
D.Teach farmers to understand technical terms.
31.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.AI companies profit greatly from rural users.
B.AI has solved all farming problems in China.
C.China's rural AI holds promise but faces challenges.
D.Farmers prefer traditional methods to AI technology.

Many philosophers and psychologists have argued that empathy (is a natural
characteristic,hard-wired into our genes and brains. The reasoning goes that each of us has a
"level"of empathy and-like our adult height-we're stuck there for life. This is all well and
good if you're already empathetic, but also means that if you struggle with empathy, you'll never
improve no matter how hard you try.
Thankfully, this view is incomplete.Through the right practices, such as diverse friendships
and even fiction reading,we can grow our empathy on purpose.Empathy is something like a
muscle:left unused,it weakens;put to work,it grows.
No emotion is always useful, and that goes for empathy as well. This is especially true for
nurses, doctors and other caregivers. These individuals are driven to their work by a deep desire to
help others.Patients of empathetic doctors are more satisfied with their care. However, when
healthcare professionals care too much, they are at high risk of burnout, tiredness and depression
from over-empathizing with others'suffering.
Some psychologists, including myself, are now exploring how people in these professions
might empathize in more sustainable ways. For example, empathetic concern-feeling for
someone-is distant from emotional empathy-feeling as someone else does.If they can develop
concern instead, for example, they can care without falling apart.
In another set of studies conducted with Carol Dweek,a Stanford professor of psychology,
we found that merely believing empathy is a skill that can be developed inspired people to try
harder at it.For instance, people who were encouraged to have a“growth mindset(思维模式)”
around empathy, compared to a "fixed mindset",spent more time listening to the suffering of
someone of another race and more energy towards trying to understand the opinions of someone
6
from a different part of the political divide.
32.What view do many philosophers and psychologists have about empathy?
A.It grows when practiced often.
B.It is inborn and difficult to develop.
C.It is a result of individual experiences.
D.It varies depending on one's parenting.
33.What does the author suggest doctors do?
A.Develop their emotional empathy.
B.Try to remove their patients'concern
C.Care for their patients as much as possible.
D.Work on improving their empathetic concern.
34.Based on Carol Dweek's studies,in which situation are people willingly empathetic?
A.If they suffer racial injustice.
B.If they are given enough attention.
C.If they believe that empathy is flexible.
D.If they listen to the same political views.
35.In which unit of a textbook does the text most likely appear?
A.Feeling for others
B.Knowing yourself more.
C.Exploring genes and emotions.
D.Repairing broken relationships.

The next time you go into a bank,a store,or a supermarket stop and listen. What do you hear?
36It's similar to the music you listen to,but it's not exactly the same. That's because this
music is especially designed to relax you,or to give you extra energy.Sometimes you don't even
realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.
Quiet background music used to be called "elevator music"because we often heard it in
elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name"Muzak".About
one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak"every day.The music plays for 15 minutes at
a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the
morning, and between three and four in the afternoon when people are more tired.37
If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs.
Some musicians or songwriters don't want theirsongs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy
when their songs are chosen.Why?38
Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely
when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does what it is designed to do.
Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in
the background39 Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.
40They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy
hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another,
Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear
Muzak!
A.Some people don't like Muzak.
B.Music is playing in the background.
C.The music gives them extra energy.
D.Factory workers produce 13 percent more.
E.Muzak tends to help people understand music better.
F.Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world.
O.They will get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used.

When I was in middle school,my family moved to a new city, where my parents started
their new business-a small grocery store downstairs in my housc. As a girl of shy and quiet
nature,I had to take a fresh start to fit into city life.
One sunny day,my school announced an exciting event,a talent show for the local food
bank.Students were encouraged to showcasc their unique talents in front of the public in the city
hall on National Day.A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the
big day.Deep down,I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate.However,my self-doubt
held me back,"I don't have any special skills to share."
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer.I couldn't shake the upsetting
feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was
helping in the grocery store after class."How about singing together in the talent show?"she
grinned."I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home.I can't help following you here."
Dear,I couldn't believe my ears.Emma, with personality and popularity, recognized my little
talent.Since Emma had the world's prettiest voice,I felt like being favoured by fortune.
"You two?The talent show for the food bank?"My mum bent towards us and her face lit up.
"Why not practise right now upstairs?I bet you'll be a perfect match."Winking at us,she seemed
to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I started rehearsing (almost every single day after school. We
brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by,I was feeling pretty
good about our act.But the day before the performance,Emma called saying that she had a
terrible stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
