In southern China's Guangdong Province, the lychee orchards (荔枝果园) are going through a smart change. A university has worked with local governments and tech partner Yushu Technology to use artificial intelligence (AI) in Gaozhou, a huge lychee-growing area.
In April, 2025, their smart farming system found that 70% of the lychee flowers had fallen in one orchard. It then made a "prescription" (处方) map to guide farmers where to use fertilizer (肥料) and control harmful insects. In the past, farmers mainly depended on their own experience.
This work is part of a bigger "AI + agriculture" project. Drones, satellites, and ground sensors (传感器) are used to watch 6,800 mu of lychee trees. Yushu Technology helps by dealing with large amounts of data and using AI models to study tree health and predict harvests. The system can find problems like harmful insects with a 95% correct rate. A simple mobile app allows farmers to call for drones, upload photos, and get expert advice. Even farmers with little tech knowledge can easily use it, helping them make better farming decisions.
The AI system brings real benefits. It helps farmers react quickly, saving trees and reducing labor. Fruit quality has improved because of better harmful insects control and care. Each tree now has a QR code (二维码) showing its growing conditions, making lychees easier to sell at higher prices. Some farmers even sell their fruits before harvest by showing buyers the data.
This smart farming model is not only improving incomes but also bringing young people back to farming. Local leaders hope to spread the "Gaozhou experience" to other places, helping more farmers and villages achieve better growth and life.
16. What did the smart system find in April 2025?
A. Trees were growing quickly. B. Many flowers had fallen.
C. Farmers used less fertilizer. D. No harmful insects were found.
17. What is the main purpose of the "prescription" map?
A. To guide farmers in watering lychee trees. B. To guide farmers in selling fruits at markets.
C. To guide farmers in picking lychees and fertilizer. D. To guide farmers in using fertilizer and pest control.
18. How do AI tools help watch and study lychee trees according to the passage?
A. B. C. D.
19. Why can farmers sell lychees at higher prices now?
A. The trees produce more fruits than before. B. The fruit quality and growing data are shown.
C. The fruits grow faster with more fertilizer. D. New lychee seeds are widely used here
20. What is the writer's attitude towards the AI project?
A. Positive and hopeful. B. Doubtful and worried. C. Pleased and relaxed. D. Angry and disappointed.

When we think about scientific achievement, geniuses like Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton always come to mind. These people are often attracted by their interest, choosing their fields of specialty (专长) at an early age. But is this always the case?
In fact, many of the most important discoveries come from a different kind of mind. Charles Darwin was an aspiring geologist when he sailed to observe faraway lands. He had little knowledge in biology but through his travels, keen observations and great curiosity, he developed the theory of evolution by natural selection (选择).
Another such great discovery was the invention of PCR (聚合酶链反应), which is necessary for certain kinds of genetic research. Its inventor, Kary Mullis, hardly earned a Ph. D in biochemistry. His time was spent writing fiction and running a bakery until a friend found him a job in biotechnology, where his great idea for PCR was born.
Darwin and Mullis were both natural explorers. Darwin did poorly in school but was always curious about the animals and plants. As a child, Mullis was more interested in the spiders in his grandparents' basement than anything else.
It may not be surprising that these creative minds developed through play and exploration. Many educators argue that the classic model of education, in which teachers lecture and students memorize, is misguided. Most children are born with the drive to play and explore, which helps develop important skills. Probably the thinking skills Darwin and Mullis got were developed through this kind of play and exploration.
So, what are schools supposed to do today? They should allow our children to step out of the classroom, and encourage them to play and try new things. As Ni Minjing, head of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, once said, "Every piece of soil, every flower and every clear night sky is a playground for scientific curiosity."
21. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To explain the purpose.
C. To attract the readers' attention. D. To give background information.
22. Which of the following is true about Darwin and Mullis?
A. Darwin was a sharp and curious observer. B. Mullis earned his Ph. D without difficulty.
C. Mullis got the idea for PCR while working at a bakery. D. Darwin was a great biologist when he began his voyages.
23. What is the main difference between "Einstein and Newton" and "Darwin and Mullis"?
A. The former group was more focused on formal education.
B. The latter group had a more non-traditional path to discovery.
C. The latter group started their fields of specialty at an early age.
D. The former group was more successful in scientific achievements.
24. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?
25. Which is the best title of the text?
A. The Focused Early Years of Geniuses B. The Success of Non-traditional Teaching
C. Unexpected Geniuses: The Power of Curiosity D. Beyond the Classroom: The Importance of Play

Leoh Ming Pei was a world-famous Chinese-American architect (建筑师). (26) His works can be seen all over the world, including the Louvre Pyramid, the National Gallery of Art and the Suzhou Museum. Pei was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province in 1917. (27) He moved to the United States to study architecture in 1935. After leaving school, Pei worked for a New York company for seven years.
In 1955, Pei started his own company. One of Pei's most famous works is the glass pyramid outside the Louvre. (28) They thought that the architecture of glass and steel (钢) seemed too modern compared with the traditional French style of the Louvre. With the support of the French President Francois Mitterand at that time, Pei completed the pyramid. Now it has become a landmark (地标) in Paris. (29) "Maybe because I'm more patient," he said, "and because I'm Chinese."
The Suzhou Museum is one of Pei's most famous buildings in China. The ink-painting style of the Suzhou gardens provided Pei with ideas for designing the Suzhou Museum. He put a lot of time and effort into the museum. During his lifetime, Pei won many of America's highest honors in architecture. (30) They will continue to be there and to be loved even after the creator is gone.
