Research shows that millions of adults have very poor mathematical(有关数学的) skills. This causes them to be unable to carry out many of the basic numerical (数字的)tasks in everyday life that many of us do naturally.These tasks include understanding travel timetables and household bills and even checking our change in shops.And poor numerical skills not only cause personal disadvantages,but can also cause a number of other social and personal illnesses.

While adults' ability to read and write has been improving,adults mathematical skills have at the same time been getting worse.The fact of the matter is that many people who are good at reading and writing simply don't like maths and don't see any point in it.What's more,maths isn't cool.It's OK to say "I'm not good at maths”,but it's not OK to say "I can't read?.To many people,maths is simply a boring school subject for which there is no need to make much of an effort because they won't need it once they leave school.

Unluckily,the problem seems to be passed down to the children.Parents who tell their children they were not good at maths at school are likely to find the same attitude   (态度)among their own children.And they will be unable to help their children with their maths homework.Even today,with interesting and new practical methods,maths is still one of those subjects that many kids hate.
