The Chengni inkstone (澄泥砚) is one of the “four famous inkstones” in our country. The skill for making it had once been lost for hundreds of years and was later brought back by Lin Xiaolin’s grandfather Lin Yongmao and his father Lin Tao.
In 1986, Lin Yongmao worked at a museum, where he read many books about making the Chengni inkstone and decided to bring this skill back to life. Although they learned from historical papers, this was not an easy task. It took them two years to find suitable materials. After failing many times, they at last succeeded in making two Chengni inkstones in 1991. It takes nearly a year and more than 10 steps to make a Chengni inkstone.
Lin Xiaolin, as the inheritor (继承人) of the skill for making the Chengni inkstone, has known the Chengni inkstone since his childhood. In 2012, he went abroad to study modern technologies. “Passing on the skill is the key to keeping it alive,” Lin Xiaolin said. So he returned to China after graduating from college, hoping to create more great Chengni inkstones by using modern technologies and traditional designs. And he has achieved much success.
The Chengni inkstone has a history of over 1,000 years. Lin Xiaolin is trying hard to bring more energy to the Chengni inkstone and make it a symbol of Chinese culture.

The Art of Chinese Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy, known as “Shufa” is more than writing—it is a form of artistic expression. Using brushes and ink, artists convey emotions through strokes: thick lines symbolize strength, while light ones reflect elegance. Historically, calligraphy was essential for scholars taking imperial exams.
Modern education values calligraphy for its mental benefits. Master Liu, a calligraphy teacher, explains, “Focusing on each stroke teaches patience and mindfulness. It’s like meditation.” Many schools now offer calligraphy classes to help students relax and appreciate traditional culture.
Despite its cultural significance, fewer young people practice calligraphy today. To attract interest, some museums use augmented reality (AR) to display famous works. Visitors can “write” digitally and learn about historical contexts.

30.How are museums making calligraphy more engaging?

The Chinese have a long tradition of art, and painting is one of the major art forms. It is still popular nowadays.
Figure painting
Starting from the Han dynasty, artists made people as the main subject of their paintings. These paintings are called figure paintings.
Gu Kaizhi (345—409) became famous for his figure paintings during the Jin dynasty. He used fine brushes to outline the people in black. Then he filled them with colour. This detailed, realistic style of painting was known as gongbi. The use of gongbi style resulted in more lifelike figure paintings.
Wu Daozi (680—759) was known as the Sage of Painting for his unique painting style. He was very good at painting human figures and created special techniques for painting clothes that seemed to flow with the light wind.
Landscape painting
Between the Tang and Song dynasties, landscape painting became popular. Artists did ink wash painting with a brush and ink. Many landscape painters were scholar artists. They liked to express themselves through painting. Instead of painting what they saw, they painted the landscapes from their imagination. They also added poems to their paintings.
Modern Chinese painters have inherited (继承) the long tradition of Chinese painting and brought this form of art to the world. Zhang Daqian (1899—1983) is regarded as “the Picasso of China” and Wu Guanzhong (1919—2010) was the first Chinese painter whose works were shown at the British Museum.

根据后文“She thought about these questions on the way to the museum.”
根据“Karen didn’t think she was playing.” In all“总共”、At first“一开始”和For example“例如”均不符。
根据“It was made from thick layers (层) of paint, with a black rectangle (长方形) in the center.”

根据“but Karen wasn’t listening”和后面的“Is there something under it, too?” looking for“寻找”、talking about“谈论”和pointing to“指着”均不符。
根据前文的“Is there something under it, too?”和“but there was nothing under it”可知,Karen本来很期待能发现什么,结果什么都没有,因此会感到“失望”,用disappointed。
根据后半句“spent the rest of the summer working on the painting”可知,Karen“接下”了妈妈的任务。

So he returned to China after graduating from college, hoping to create more great Chengni inkstones by using modern technologies and traditional designs. And he has achieved much success.

29.What does calligraphy teach according to Master Liu?
A.Historical knowledge. B.Meditation techniques.
C.Patience and focus. D.Digital skills.
30.How are museums making calligraphy more engaging?
A.By reducing class fees. B.Using AR technology.
C.Organizing competitions. D.Inviting famous artists.
31.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To advertise calligraphy classes.
B.To discuss the decline of traditional art.
