Is Summer the Best Season?
Summer is a time for fun—sunny days, ice cream, and no school! But is it really the best season? Some kids say yes, while others disagree. What’s your opinion?
Posted by Alex at 8:20 a.m.
In my opinion, summer is the best season of the year. It brings longer days and nice weather. Summer break gives you time to rest and spend time with your family. What’s more, sunlight gives you lots of vitamin (维他命) D, which is healthy for your body and mind. On top of that, summer brings lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, like berries and melons. Also, summer is a great time to travel with family, catch up with old friends, read fun books, and take part in summer camps and other fascinating activities.
I don’t think summer is the best season, because we have more holidays in winter. In winter, we have Christmas, Chinese New Year, Tet (Vietnamese New Year), and a few more. These celebrations mean fun with family, delicious food, and gift-giving. I can’t wait to prepare the gifts for my friends.
Summer is the best season for everybody. For many kids, summer means no school, which means fun at home! Because of the hot weather, summer is the time of the year for swimming and eating ice cream. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a very important time in China. Families come together to admire the moon and eat sweet mooncakes.
For a long time, these cakes had fillings like lotus seed paste (莲蓉) or nuts inside. They are very traditional. But this year, many young people are doing something different and very creative. They are making surprising new kinds of “mooncakes” that everyone is talking about. A new trend (趋势) is popular online. People are using special mooncake molds in a very funny way. A mold is a tool that gives food a special shape with nice patterns. They take a hot hamburger, some noodles, or even rice, then put it inside the mold and press it hard. In a second, the hamburger looks just like a traditional mooncake!
Of course, a hamburger that is shaped like a mooncake does not taste sweet. It still tastes like a hamburger. So, why do people do it? For young people, it is all about having fun and sharing a cool idea with their friends online. The round shape is the most important part. It helps them feel the spirit of the festival, which is about family staying together and being happy.
These new ideas are not just about the food inside. Many shops are now selling mooncakes in very clever boxes. After you finish eating the mooncakes, the box does not become rubbish. You can follow simple instructions to change it into something useful and new. For example, some boxes can become a beautiful picture for your wall or even a small fan (扇子) to use on a hot day.
This fun activity shows how young people are celebrating old festivals in their own special ways. They are not forgetting the old customs. They are just adding more games and creativity. This makes the traditional festival even more exciting and interesting.

18. What can people do with the “clever” mooncake boxes according to the passage?
A. Throw them away at once. B. Keep them as rubbish.
C. Sell them for beautiful pictures. D. Put them to a second use.

D. Young people are against traditional festivals in this way.
20. Which shows the structure of the text?

Hello! I am a little sugar cube (方糖). You can probably see me in the sugar bowl on your kitchen table. Before I came to your home, I had a very long and interesting journey. My story did not start in a box or a shop. It began far away, in a large place called Guangxi.
I was not always a small cube. I was once a tall sugarcane (甘蔗) plant in a green field under the warm sun. I stood in a big field with thousands of my brothers and sisters. Together, we looked like a “green ocean”! A kind farmer took care of us. He chose to grow us for two reasons. First, a small piece of land can grow a lot of sugarcane, much more than rice. This means the farmer can make good money for his family. Second, we are easy to plant. We can grow for three years after being planted just once. So, the farmer has more time to do other jobs.
But there is an even bigger reason why I am here. My journey is very important for the whole country. I am not just sweet. Sugar gives people quick energy when they are tired to make them lively again in daily life. It is also used to make other necessary things, like some medicines. Because sugar is so useful, a country must have its own enough supply (供应). The government helps the farmers to grow us, making sure there is always enough sugar for everyone in the country.
Finally, harvest day came. The farmer sent us on a truck to a big factory. Inside, many machines worked hard to change us. They took the sweet juice from the tall plants and turned it into shiny, white cubes like me. It was an amazing transformation (转变)!
Now, my long journey is complete. I wait happily in your sugar bowl. When you add me to your milk or tea, you get my sweetness. I hope you will remember my amazing story.

Young Heroes Around the World
When you hear the word “hero”, what comes to your mind? Do you think of superheroes in movies with special powers? While they are exciting to watch, real heroes don’t need magic. In every corner of our world, there are great kids who show that true heroism isn’t about having powers, but about having a super heart.
In Nepal, a 12-year-old boy named Kamal Nepali saved a 2-year-old girl, who had fallen into a deep narrow (狭窄) hole in the rocks. When adults couldn’t get into the hole because it was too small, Kamal went down and brought her back safely.
In India, a girl named Asma Khan showed that you don’t need special skills to help others. When heavy rains flooded them, she saved 40 children by carrying them to safety. What made this amazing was that she couldn’t swim.
Sometimes being a hero means thinking of others first. In Australia,13-year-old Jordan Rice was in a flood (洪水) with his family. When helpers came, he told them to save his younger brother first. Sadly, Jordan and his mother were washed away by the water.
Other children help in different ways. Edyl Jolfil from Haiti showed great will. His father couldn’t move one side of his body, and the family had very little money to support them every month. Still, Edyl worked hard and never lost hope. Ryan Hreljac, a 6-year-old Canadian boy, learned that many people in Africa didn’t have clean water. He started doing small jobs to raise money. He helped build a well that provided clean water for a whole village.
These young heroes show that age doesn’t matter when it comes to helping others. No matter how young you are, you can help others and make the world a better place.
