Making invisible ink (隐形墨水) is a lot of fun. All you need is some common objects.
What you’ll need:
•Half a lemon •Water •A spoon •A bowl
•White paper •A cotton bud •A light bulb
Instructions:
1. Squeeze (挤) some lemon juice into the bowl and add a few drops of water.
2. Mix the water and lemon juice with the spoon.
3. Put the cotton bud into the mixture (混合液) and write a message onto the white paper.
4. Wait for the juice to dry so it becomes completely invisible.
5. When you are ready to read your secret message or show it to someone else, heat the paper by holding it close to the light bulb.
What’s happening?
Lemon juice turns brown when heated. Putting some water in the lemon juice makes it very hard to notice when you put it on the paper. Other things which work in the same way include orange juice, honey, milk, onion juice and so on.
1. What is the cotton bud for?
A. Squeezing the lemon. B. Adding some water.
C. Mixing the water and juice. D. Writing something.
2. How can a person make the secret message appear?
A. By waiting for some time. B. By reading it aloud.
C. By heating the paper. D. By holding it high.
3. Which works in the same way as lemon?
A. Milk. B. Water. C. Spoons. D. Bowls.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. A

The greatest scientists were famous not only for their discoveries, but also for their interesting lives. Having a special, uncommon mind often goes hand in hand with unusual acts.
Nikola Tesla is known for many inventions. One is the alternating current (AC) electricity. While inventing it, Tesla was good at keeping things in mind, because he used picture thinking and imagined every step in his mind before even picking up a pencil. Tesla said he wanted to do it because of his mother, who invented small electrical machines when he was a child.
In his later years, Tesla had many strange habits. He slept only two hours every night and dined at exactly 8:10 p. m. After dinner, he’d often work until 3 a. m. Before bed, Tesla curled (卷曲) each foot 100 times, saying it was good for his brain.
Another scientist encouraged by his mother was Albert Einstein, though what he got from his mother was a love of music. In fact, Einstein often played music on the piano and the violin to help him brainstorm.
Einstein’s achievements include the most famous equation (方程式) E=mc2 and his theory of relativity. However, thanks to his wild hair, he was also well-known for the looks of a "mad scientist" and you can tell that he had some interesting quirks (个性). For example, he had a strong dislike of wearing socks. And Einstein was so withdrawn (内向的) as a boy that he couldn’t speak until he was three.
Sometimes, the smartest of us are also the strangest. That quiet child in the corner may be the next Tesla or Einstein one day.
4. How did Tesla remember things?
A. By drawing mind-maps. B. By reading aloud.
C. By taking things down. D. By thinking in pictures.
5. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Tesla hated having to wear socks.
B. Tesla did some foot exercises before bed.
C. Einstein was outgoing when he was a child.
D. Einstein was also famous for his hair color.
6. What did Tesla and Einstein have in common?
A. They both thought and acted in unusual ways.
B. They both had great inventions of the electricity.
C. They both played the piano well for better working.
D. They both took up inventing because of their mothers.
7. What does the writer mainly want to tell us about?
A. The inventions of great people in the world.
B. The living habits of smart people around us
C. The two great mothers of Tesla and Einstein.
D. The special things about well-known scientists.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. D
【解析】

【4题详解】
根据文章第二段中“Tesla was good at keeping things in mind, because he used picture thinking...”可知,Tesla擅长记忆是因为他使用图像思维(picture thinking),即在脑海中想象每一步。
【5题详解】
根据第三段“Before bed, Tesla curled each foot 100 times”可知,Tesla 睡前会做足部运动,故B项正确。
【6题详解】
文章第一段提到“Having a special, uncommon mind often goes hand in hand with unusual acts”,随后分别列举了Tesla和Einstein生活中不同寻常的习惯和个性(如 Tesla的足部运动、Einstein不穿袜子等),说明他们思考和行动方式都很独特。
【7题详解】
文章开篇指出科学家不仅因发现闻名,还因有趣的生活闻名,结尾总结最聪明的人也可能最奇怪。全文主要围绕Tesla和Einstein这两位著名科学家生活中特殊、有趣的一面展开,而非单纯介绍发明或母亲。

Reading is getting more popular among young Chinese. A new survey says that 85% of young people in China read at least 1 book last year. The number of young people who are reading has been rising in recent years, especially for teenagers, who read an average (平均) of 11.5 books.
The data (数据) shows that teenagers spend much more time reading from school textbooks to some other reading materials, such as novels, e-books, magazines and so on. But younger children (ages 2-8) are mainly reading for fun. Compared with the past, the time teenagers spend on pleasure reading has dropped.
When it comes to technology and reading, the survey suggests little. It does point out that many parents control the time of electronic reading, mainly because of worrying about increased screen time. However, most Chinese parents are helping their children to develop a reading habit. They serve as examples for their children. More than 70% of Chinese parents spend at least 20 minutes a day reading to their children aged 0 to 8 years old, and visit bookstores with them an average of three times a year. Data shows that kids and teens who do a lot of reading, compared to those who don’t like reading, have more books in the home, and more books bought for them. Their parents read more often, and would like to spare time to read with them.
When was the last time you read a book? If you’re one of the countless people who don’t develop a habit of reading, you might be missing out. Everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might be useful. The more knowledge you have, the better equipped you are to deal with any challenge you’ll face. Remember that although you might lose something else, knowledge can never be taken away from you.
Now open a book, and feed your soul.
12. Why do many parents control the time of their children’s electronic reading?
A. E books are expensive. B. It may harm children’s health.
C. It’s very hard to order. D. It could be a waste of time.
13. How should parents encourage their children to read more?
A. Talk with their teachers to encourage them in developing reading habits.
B. Buy more books for them in bookstores or borrow some from libraries.
C. Ask them to read more books every day through setting up reading groups.
D. Act as role models for them, read for their children and read for themselves.
14. What’s the survey mainly about?
A. Teenagers’ after-class activities. B. Parents-child relationships.
C. Young people’s reading habits. D. Read more often for fun.
15. Which one of the following is most probably to be discussed next?
A. Encourage parents to read more after work.
B. List some different opinions about reading.
C. Develop children’s writing habits gradually.
D. Introduce some books for young people to read.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. D

I’m so excited about our upcoming trip to Xinjiang. Let me tell you something I know about the local food and customs.
When it comes to local food, nang is a must-try. It is a traditional flatbread. You’d better break it into several pieces. It’s considered a symbol of unity in Xinjiang, and people believe nang should be shared with others. Before eating a meal, you are supposed to have a hand-washing ceremony. The host will pour water over your hands three times. It’s impolite to shake water off your hands after washing. Instead, you should use a towel to dry your hands. When the host pours tea for you, you are supposed to hold the teacup with both hands. You should avoid pouring tea for the host.
Wish you a pleasant trip.
Yours,
Li Hua

At 3:09 p.m. on May 27, a rocket named “Feiyan-1” took off from the launch (发射) base in Lenghu, Qinghai Province. One minute later, it reached a height of 10,555.7 meters.
Although rocket launches are common in China, this one was different. The rocket was independently developed by some students from high schools in Shenzhen, Beijing and other places. They aren’t professional engineers; they are teenagers with an average age of under 18!
Wang Yuning, from Shenzhen, served as the chief designer (总设计师). Interested in rockets and the universe, he has learned a lot about aerospace (航空航天) since childhood. With the support of his school, Wang took the lead in setting up the Red Arrow Aerospace Club, where its members gain professional knowledge about rocket design.
The rocket took 11 months to complete. Development of the rocket began in June 2024 when high school aerospace fans from across China met in Beijing to get training and plan the rocket. Then, they went back to their schools and worked on designing, building, and testing in their free time.
The successful launch of “Feiyan-1” was more than just a technological achievement. It shows that young people can achieve amazing things when given the chance to explore and follow their dreams.
In an interview, Wang explained the meaning behind the rocket’s name. He said, “The rocket symbolizes a swallow (燕) that flies high in the air, just like us teenagers.” This project will encourage students to ________.
