Terry Fox was only seventeen when he got cancer. He must have felt hopeless when the doctor said his right leg would have to be cut off 6 inches (英寸) above the knee.
But to everyone’s surprise, Terry Fox made up his mind to become a long-distance runner and do something about the cancer. What a dream!
Although it seemed impossible, Terry decided to run across the whole country. He hoped to raise one million dollars for cancer research. Few people believed he would make it. Anyway, on April 12, 1980, Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope. For the first few days of his marathon (马拉松) , Terry Fox was alone. He started running at 4:30 am. Day by day, people began to realize that something big was happening on the lonely road. As people saw Terry, they stopped and donated money for cancer research.
However, his health was worse. He had to give up his marathon on September 1, 1980. Terry died three months later, at the age of 22. In his short life, he raised $24 million for cancer research— one dollar for each person in his motherland.
Since his death, the yearly Terry Fox Run, first held in 1981, has grown to be the world’s largest one-day fundraiser (募捐活动) for cancer research.

The Dead Sea is located in the Jordan Rift Valley in southwest Asia. And it isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration (含盐度) of more than 30 percent. The Dead Sea stays so salty because of its special natural conditions. Each year it receives very little rainfall, and only a small amount (数量) of fresh water flows (流入) into it. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate (蒸发) quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher. For these reasons, it is also known as the Salt Sea.
If you swim in the Dead Sea, you won’t see any sea life—no plants or animals. The living things can’t survive there because of the high salt concentration. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float (漂浮) well, without the need for life jackets. In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. If you walk along the shore, you’ll probably see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.
28. Which of the following helps make the Dead Sea so salty?
A. Its connection to the ocean.
B. A lot of fresh water flowing into it.
C. The hot weather causing fast evaporation (蒸发) .
29. Why is the Dead Sea called “dead”?
A. Because no living things can survive there.
B. Because its water is too cold for life.
C. Because no people live around it.
30. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. People can enjoy themselves in the Dead Sea.
B. The name “Dead Sea” brings danger to people.
C. Swimming skills are important in the Dead Sea.
31. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Plants and Animals in the Dead Sea
B. The Dead Sea: A Lake Like No Other
C. The History of the Dead Sea

This spring, tens of thousands of volunteers came to Minqin from all over the country. They came to the place to plant trees with their own hands. Nearly 80 percent of them are young people aged from 20 to 35. They shared their stories online, making this small northwestern county with a population of 170,000 become well-known.
Many people wonder why these young people choose to plant trees in Minqin. According to their comments, they get a strong sense of joy and power from the work. When planting young trees, they forget all their worries and feel peaceful and focused (专注). Some say the trees they plant grow with them, facing difficulties bravely just like they do.

【答案】例文
Dear Tom,
You must be excited about coming to China soon. Let me tell you something about Chinese customs.
When you visit a friend, you should shake hands and smile. It is polite to arrive on time. You had better bring a small gift, like fruits or flowers. During the meal, let the old people eat first. This shows respect. When using chopsticks, never stick them upright into rice, because it looks like incense for the dead. Also, don’t point at others with chopsticks. Remember these tips and you’ll enjoy your stay. Chinese people are friendly and helpful. If you have any questions, just ask.
Have a safe trip, and I look forward to meeting you soon!
Yours,
Li Hua
