In November 2024, the British Library added ten Chinese online books to its collection, including Lord of the Mysteries, Soul Land, and The Joy of Life. This is the second time the British Library has added Chinese online books. The first time was in 2022. This shows the growing importance of Chinese online literature (文学) worldwide.
The British Library and China’s online book business, Yuewen, have started a project called Literature in the Digital Age to help British and Chinese people share their cultures and learn from each other.
“This project is important. It’s a new way for the two countries to work together,” a Chinese official said. “Chinese online books show many different kinds of stories and carry traditional Chinese culture. They appeal to many readers worldwide. They let people around the world connect with stories in new ways.”
By the end of 2023, over 537 million people in China were reading online books, with readers from more than 200 countries also enjoying them.
Vaishnu Ojha from India loves Lord of the Mysteries. He discovered the book through a friend and appreciated its writing and the exciting story it tells. In May 2021, he started the Lord of the Mysteries Fan Club to share his love with others. His online group has about 24,000 members from around the world who discuss the story, characters, and new parts of the book. Vaishnu often notices details he has missed before when discussing with others.
Hou Xiaonan, the leader of Yuewen, said, “These books show the creative ideas of young people in China. Having them in the British Library helps UK readers and book experts (专业人士) understand modern Chinese culture better and gives UK writers a chance to reach more new readers.”
33. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about Chinese online literature’s ________.
A. feature B. influence C. theme D. background
34. What does the underlined phrase “appeal to” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Relax. B. Interest. C. Excuse. D. Worry.
35. Why did Vaishnu Ojha start the Lord of the Mysteries Fan Club?
A. To meet the book’s writer. B. To learn how to write a book.
C. To share his love for the book. D. To help Yuewen sell more books.
36. What does Hou Xiaonan think of Chinese online books?
A. They make a difference in cultural communication.
B. They come up with many ideas about Chinese history.
C. They give UK writers a chance to gain more knowledge.
D. They help UK readers know about ancient Chinese culture.
D
Birds in cities stay awake longer, according to a new study. It found that birds in light-polluted areas are active for longer each day than those in the countryside, where there is less artificial (人工的) light.
Light pollution is when there’s lots of artificial light from street lamps, buildings and cars. This brightens the natural darkness and can trick animals into thinking the day is longer than it really is.
Scientists studied over four million bird calls from BirdWeather, a citizen-science project. People send birdsong recordings to it, and AI helps identify (识别) the sounds. BirdWeather then uses that information to study how birds behave and how their numbers change. Scientists also compared the information with light pollution data (数据) from satellite images.
Researchers listened to birdsong in the mornings and evenings, when the birds were most active. They found that birds in towns or cities, which have lots of light pollution, sing for 50 minutes longer every day on average. They start about 20 minutes earlier in the morning and then continue for about 30 minutes more in the evening.
Not all birds respond (反应) to artificial light the same way. Birds with larger eyes seemed more sensitive (敏感) to it. American robins, Australian magpie-larks and European goldfinches stay active much longer than average. But small-eyed birds like sparrows showed less change.
More study is needed on how birds are influenced. For example, Dr Brent Pease from Southern Illinois University said nobody knows yet if less sleep harms birds. He pointed out, “Birds have developed smart ways to deal with loss of sleep during migratory (迁徙) periods.”
37. What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Street lamp. B. Light pollution. C. Longer daytime. D. Natural darkness.
38. To find out how light pollution influences birds’ activity, the scientists ________.
A. collected birds’ sleep recordings B. counted birds with AI in different places
C. watched how birds sing D. studied bird calls and light pollution data
39. What can we learn from Brent Pease’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Further research is required. B. Light pollution does harm birds.
C. Birds can’t solve loss of sleep. D. The university supports him a lot.
40. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Why birds are sensitive to light. B. Light pollution changes birds’ kinds.
C. How AI helps study birds’ sounds. D. City lights keep birds singing longer.

More than two thousand years ago, during China’s Spring and Autumn Period, many states often fought wars with each other.
The State of Qi, ruled by Duke Huan (齐桓公), had a wise minister named Guan Zhong. He was very good at coming up with smart plans.
After Qi won a hard war, the soldiers (士兵) prepared to return home. Everyone was happy. But then a problem happened—they got lost. When they first came, it was spring. There were flowers and green trees. Now it was winter. Everything was white with snow, covering all roads. Trapped in the mountains for many days, they were nearly out of food and water. The soldiers were tired and hungry, worrying about the danger of never finding their way back.
When Duke Huan asked for ideas, Guan Zhong suggested using old horses. He explained, “Old horses have traveled many roads. They remember well. Even if they can’t see the road, they can still find their way home.” Duke Huan agreed to try. They chose the oldest horses, untied their reins (缰绳) and let them walk ahead.
Following the old horses—who walked slowly, smelled the ground and looked very sure—they crossed snowy mountains and valleys. They walked for a long time. At last, the old horses found the way home! Everyone was saved.
From then on, people used the saying “An old horse knows the way” to describe someone with experience.

【答案】例文
Dear Jack,
I’m glad to hear that you’re going on the weekend field trip with us! Regarding your questions, here is some advice for you.
First, since we will do a lot of walking and climbing in the wild, comfortable sports clothes and a pair of sneakers are the best choice. They will make you feel relaxed and easy to move around. Second, for colours, I suggest you wear bright colours like red or yellow. This way, you can stand out in the green forest, which is safer and great for taking photos. Avoid wearing white, as it might get dirty easily.
I hope these suggestions are helpful. See you this weekend!
Yours,
Li Hua
