Artificial intelligence (AI) is quickly becoming part of everyday life. According to a 2024 Pew Research survey, most AI experts (专家) say adults in the United States communicate with AI several times a day. Should people be polite to AI? Should we say “please” and “thank you” to chatbots? Here’s what four kids say about it. What’s your opinion? Please join in the discussion.
Aubrey Lamirault, 11
Los Angeles, California
Being polite isn’t just about having good manners. It can also lead to better results. AI systems learn from communicating with people. This means that how a person behaves decides AI’s answers. Using polite language is a good idea. It can lead to better information with fewer errors (错误). Just as the saying goes, kindness goes a long way!
Hanming Wang, 10
Saratoga, California
AI doesn’t have feelings. Sometimes, being less polite means being more honest. You can say exactly what you mean. Too many polite words can confuse (使……困惑) AI.
Someone might use AI to improve a paragraph with a lot of errors. But if they say, “Could you please make some small changes?” it might only make tiny changes. In this example, being too polite hides how big the problems are. AI won’t do what you really need it to do.
Ethan Yu, 12
Queens, New York
Our world needs more kindness. When we practice it, whether toward people or technology (技术), kindness can spread. Being kind, even to AI, can bring good habits.
Some argue that there’s no need to be polite to AI. It doesn’t have feelings. But being polite to AI can help us become more thoughtful. It’s a small choice, but it can make a big difference.
Asha Curley, 11
Scottsdale, Arizona
AI helps people to be more efficient (有效率的). But does AI really need to see the words “please” or “thank you”? No. You don’t have to be too polite to AI. Just focus on being simple. This is good practice in business and technology.
Being polite to other people is necessary. But being wise about using AI is more important than being polite to it.
28. This passage may be written for ________.
A. young students B. young parents C. school teachers D. AI experts
29. Who thinks we should be polite to AI?
A. Aubrey and Hanming. B. Aubrey and Ethan.
C. Hanming and Ethan. D. Hanming and Asha.
30. What’s the purpose of writing this article?
A. To present different ideas about being polite to AI.
B. To explain why we have different opinions on AI.
C. To discuss the differences between AI and humans.
D. To ask teenagers to communicate with AI politely.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A

C
“Don’t pass to Makayla. She’s not like us. She’s not serious about soccer.” Olivia’s teammate Jordan whispered as they jogged together onto the indoor soccer field. The score was tied, 1-1, after half-time.
Thinking about what Jordan said, Olivia got into position for the start of the second half. Olivia loved to pass. That was her job as the center midfielder (中前卫). She also loved when all of her teammates, including Makayla, had the chance to touch the ball. But Jordan was right. Makayla never scored before.
After the second half began, Olivia received the ball from Jordan. She moved it from foot to foot, keeping it close. Jordan called for the ball up the court, but many of the Green Team members were around her. Directly across from Olivia, Makayla waved (挥舞) her arms. She was all by herself. Olivia used the inside of her foot to pass the ball to her. Makayla took a shot (射门) but she failed again.
Jordan was next to Olivia in a second. “I told you,” she said, shaking her head.
A few minutes later, Olivia got the ball again. When she looked up, she saw Makayla in the centre of the field. Next to her was Jordan. Both girls were open. This time, Olivia pushed the ball to Jordan. Jordan received the ball, and shot the ball with her left foot. The ball almost came in. “Nice pass,” Jordan said.
As the Green Team set up for a goal kick, Makayla ran toward Olivia, but she fell over. “Are you OK, Makayla?” Olivia asked. Makayla stood up. “Yep,” she said. “I know I’m still learning, but I love soccer.” “Me too,” Olivia said. Makayla was smiling wide. Olivia felt exactly the way Makayla did. And she knew that Jordan felt the same way too.
The Green Team was trying to have another shot. Olivia held on to the ball. With the ball at her feet, she looked up and there was Makayla, wide open in front of the net. Another midfielder was around Olivia about to attack, and many of the Green Team members were around Jordan. She passed the ball to Makayla. The Green Team’ s goalie (守门员) ran to catch the ball. But before the goalie could get it, the ball bounced off (从……弹开) Makayla’ s body and slowly rolled over the white line. Everyone shouted. Makayla’s mouth dropped wide open.
“I did it!” Makayla jumped up and down.
“You scored!” Olivia ran up and wrapped her arms with Makayla.
“Nice job,” Jordan said and gave her a five with Makayla. Then she whispered to Olivia. She got lucky? Olivia didn’t want to reply to her. All Olivia could think of at that moment was that she loved playing soccer- as part of a team.
31. Why did Olivia pass the ball to Makayla for the second time?
A. Because Olivia didn’t trust Jordan any more.
B. Because Olivia knew Makayla would succeed.
C. Because it was the best choice for Olivia at that time.
D. Because they were good friends and knew each other very well.
32. What can you infer from the passage?
A. Olivia would stop being friends with Jordan. B. Luck helped Makayla get one score.
C. Jordan didn’t trust Makayla’ s football skills. D. Makayla plays football better than Jordan.
33. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A. Never Give Up B. A Passing Problem
C. The Best Midfielder D. An Exciting Match
【答案】31. C 32. C 33. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了Olivia在一场室内足球比赛中,不顾队友Jordan的反对,多次传球给新手Makayla,最终Makayla进球的故事,体现了团队合作和信任的重要性。
【31题详解】
由第七段“With the ball at her feet, she looked up and there was Makayla, wide open in front of the net. Another midfielder was around Olivia about to attack, and many of the Green Team members were around Jordan”可知,当时Makayla处于无人防守的最佳位置,而Olivia被对手围攻、Jordan也被多人盯防,传球给Makayla是当时最好的选择。
【32题详解】
第一段Jordan说“Don’t pass to Makayla. She’s not like us. She’s not serious about soccer”,第一次射门失败后她说“I told you”,进球后她私下说“She got lucky?”,这些都表明Jordan完全不信任Makayla的足球技能。
【33题详解】
全文围绕Olivia在比赛中面临的核心矛盾——“要不要把球传给不被队友看好的Makayla”展开,整个故事都围绕这个传球的选择难题,因此“A Passing Problem”(一个传球难题)是最合适的标题。
D
IMAGINE THIS: You pick up your phone for a video call with a friend. Not only can you see his face and hear his voice, but you can also smell the cookies he just made. It sounds crazy, right? But this could come true one day.
When you talk to someone on your phone, you can hear the sound through the built-in speakers. Your phone also has a screen that displays images and videos. The screen uses tiny dots (小点) made up of three main colors: red, green and blue. By mixing these colors in different ways, your phone can show you everything from beautiful beach scenes to cute puppies.
How about the sense of smell? Any smell that we can notice is a mixture of different smell molecules (分子). When these molecules float through the air and reach your nose, your nose sends signals (信号) to your brain. Then it’s your brain’s job to know what the smell is.
So how could your phone send these smell molecules to you? Scientists are trying to find out a way called DST. Think about how your phone screen works. It doesn’t have every colour stored inside it. Instead, it uses just three colours to create different colours. Similarly, DST uses a small number of different boxes. Each of them has a scent (香味). Just like how tiny dots mix three colors to create different colors, these scent boxes could mix to create different smells.
Each kind of smell has a special digital code (代码). When you receive one from others, your phone could mix tiny amounts of the different scents from the boxes to create the smell. This mixture would then be released through a small vent (排气孔) on the phone. With just a few boxes, your phone could create millions of different smells.
One is designing a system that can produce thousands of different smells using only a few boxes. Another is about controlling how strong a smell should be. The boxes should also be easy to be filled again, and what’s inside them should be safe for us to take in.
Even though we’re not there yet, it’s getting closer and closer. Maybe one day you’ll be able to not only see and hear your friend’s birthday party over the phone but also smell the candles they blew out!

七、阅读表达 (本大题共5小题, 每小题2分, 共10分)
阅读下面短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过6个单词。
Do you love capybaras? They have millions of fans worldwide. Now, capybara lovers in St. Augustine, Florida, have a great place to visit. At the Capybara Café (咖啡店), they can feed and pet (抚摸) capybaras.
Since its opening last October, the café has welcomed hundreds of animal lovers. Leah Macri is one of the visitors. “Their fur feels like straw (稻草),” she said. “When they get comfortable enough, they’ll fall over.”
There is a daily limit to the number of visitors and you have to book several months ahead (提前). After entering the café, visitors are taken into a small room in groups of six. They are given blankets to put over their laps (大腿上). Then, three capybaras are brought into the room. The 30-minute experience costs $49 per person. Although it’s called a café, the place doesn’t sell coffee. It only sells capybara-themed T-shirts, cups and toys. The money goes to support a local animal shelter.
Stephanie Angel, the owner of the café, is planning to open another capybara café. The new place will also be in Florida. But because they are getting more famous, perhaps many other cities will see similar “cafés” soon.

I’m writing to recommend my uncle, Mr. Wang, as the role model around us.
He is a 40-year-old doctor who is always kind and patient. He works in a local hospital and is loved by his patients. What impresses me most is his devotion to his work. Last year, when a terrible earthquake hit a city, he volunteered to go there without hesitation. He worked day and night to save the injured people, even though he was very tired and in danger. His bravery and selflessness deeply moved me.

AI doesn’t have feelings. Sometimes, being less polite means being more honest. You can say exactly what you mean. Too many polite words can confuse (使……困惑) AI.
Someone might use AI to improve a paragraph with a lot of errors. But if they say, “Could you please make some small changes?” it might only make tiny changes. In this example, being too polite hides how big the problems are. AI won’t do what you really need it to do.

34. The writer mentioned how the phone screen works in Paragraph 4 to ________.
A. make the readers curious about DST B. give the readers an example of using DST
C. prove the writer’s opinion on DST D. help the readers understand DST better
35. The following sentence can best be put at the beginning of ________.
Creating a phone that can produce smells comes with challenges, though.
A. Paragraph 4 B. Paragraph 5 C. Paragraph 6 D. Paragraph 7
36. What can we know from the passage?
A. Red, green and yellow are main colours of tiny dots.
B. The brain produces signals and lets us know the smell.
C. We can mix different digital codes to create different smells.
D. Boxes are necessary for producing different scents on the phone.
37. What does the writer think of developing DST?
A. Dangerous and useless. B. Challenging but hopeful.
C. Meaningful and necessary. D. Meaningful but dangerous.
