Have you ever imagined going inside of a video game? That dream may soon come true. It’s called the “metaverse(元宇宙)”.
The metaverse is a shared online 3D world which is considered as the future of the Internet. Instead of being on a computer, in the metaverse you might use a VR headset(虚拟现实头盔) to enter a world connecting all kinds of environments. It will feel real because the technology can simulate(模拟) our senses: sight, hearing, touch and even smell.
So, what can you do inside of the metaverse? Anything you want! You can meet other people wherever they are. Your location(位置) will no longer matter. In the metaverse, people would be connected at all times. So, if you are bored and can’t find any friends to play basketball with, don’t worry. Just jump into the metaverse and join a game.
The metaverse doesn’t just connect people. It creates a new space, full of places to explore. Are you tired of visiting the same beach every year? Forget Sanya. Meet your friends in the metaverse and go to a beach on the moon—or anywhere else you can imagine. Once you’re there, you can do more than just swim in the water. You can fly over the sand or dive to the bottom of the sea. You can ride horses, or better yet, dinosaurs!
Cathy Hackl, an expert in metaverse technology, said her son’s first concert was inside of a video game. “Just because it happened in a video game, it didn’t make it less real for him,” she said. “Perhaps the metaverse will change our idea of reality(真实).”
( ) 17. How can people visit the metaverse?
A. With a computer. B. With a mobile phone. C. With a VR headset.
( ) 18. Which is NOT true about the metaverse?

C. It can create a new real space for people to explore.
( ) 19. What does Cathy Hackl think of the metaverse?
A. It’s a different kind of reality.
B. It will hardly change our life.
C. It’s harmful to the children.
( ) 20. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A science study. B. A computer game. C. A new technology.

Do stars only appear at night? The answer is no. Venus(金星) is the only star that can be seen in daytime. It shone at its brightest in the night sky on July 7th this year.
Venus is the second planet from the sun. It is the second brightest natural object, behind the earth’s moon, in the night sky. Why is it so bright? First of all, Venus is the closest planet to the earth. It is also covered by highly reflective(反射的) clouds, which can reflect about 70 percent of the sunlight striking(照射) it, almost twice as much as the earth does. Some people called 2017 the year of Venus, because the planet was at its brightest twice that year. Venus gets brighter when it goes further away from the sun, and nearer to the earth.
If Venus is so bright and close to us, isn’t it a better choice for human exploration(探索) than Mars? It is closer to the earth than Mars and it’s closer to the earth in size. The closer distance to the sun means solar power(太阳能) will be easier to generate as well. However, with a temperature of about 465℃ on the surface, Venus is the hottest planet in our solar system!
But scientists never give up. Recently, a team of NASA and Russian scientists created new computer equipment that can stand temperatures of 480℃. It can work under Venus-like conditions for almost 22 days. The next step, according to the scientists, is to send a probe(探测器) to Venus by 2025.
( ) 21. What can’t we learn about Venus according to Paragraph 2?
A. It’s the second planet from the sun.
B. It’s the brightest natural object in the night sky.
C. It’s the closest planet to the earth.
( ) 22. The underlined word “generate” is similar in meaning to the word “__________”.
A. heat B. produce C. spread
( ) 23. What makes Venus a worse place for human exploration than Mars?
A. The closer distance to the earth.
B. The similar size to the earth.
C. The extremely high temperature.
( ) 24. According to the last paragraph, the new computer equipment __________.
a. was created by some UK scientists b. can stand temperatures of 480℃
c. can work for about 22 days on Venus d. will be sent to Venus by 2025
A. ab B. bc C. cd

Chinese fancy knots(中国结), also called Chinese knots, are very important in Chinese culture. They began as a form of traditional art in the Tang and Song Dynasties(朝代) in China, and became popular in the Ming Dynasty. Long ago, they found their way to Japan and other Southeast Asian countries, and were well received there. Now they are regarded as one of the symbols of Chinese culture.
As for the name itself, it is surely meaningful. The Chinese word for “knot”, jie, means “connection”. And the pronunciation of the Chinese word jie is very close to that of ji—good luck. As a result, Chinese knots are used as a way to express people’s strong wishes for marvellous things like happiness, love and good luck.
The knots are used widely in everyday life. They come in different sizes. Small ones are connected to jewellery(珠宝), clothes and gifts in order to draw people’s attention, while large ones are used to make a living room or study more beautiful. Whether large or small, they are named after their shapes and usages. For example, Double Coin Knots are called Shuangqian Jie, because they are in the shape of two ancient Chinese coins, meaning “good things come in pairs”. Besides, Chinese knots are famous for their bright colors. Different colors have different traditional cultural meanings. Red means good luck and happiness, green means health, and yellow means wealth.
All in all, the famous Chinese fancy knots fully show the Chinese culture. These brightly colored knots with their endless chains(链条) of knots mean that life on the earth will continue forever.

In traditional Chinese operas there are many classic roles, like sheng, dan, jing, mo and chou. Among them, the chou performer was the first one to get dressed and have his make-up done. Most people usually pay little attention to chou. However, it is a very important part in traditional Chinese operas. The reason is that it joins beauty and ugliness together perfectly.
Usually there are two kinds of chou on the stage, wen chou and wu chou. Wen chou often has a white dot(点) painted on his nose and takes the roles of fisherman, boatman, servant and so on. The other kind is wu chou. Wu chou performers often wear tight clothing(紧身衣) and move quickly. They are good at martial arts(武术) and can jump several meters high. They usually express themselves in loud voices and play humorous roles, for example, kind thieves.
Chou performers often make people laugh by their spoken parts and body language, instead of singing skills. Whether they look ugly or beautiful, whether the roles they play are officials or thieves on the stage, chou roles are all humorous characters who appear in funny faces. They use the roles of chou to bring out the good qualities in people. Maybe it’s the charm(魅力) of traditional Chinese operas.

Nobody wants to lose, but we must accept that losing is a part of life. After all, we can’t win all the time. However, we can learn something valuable from every failure(失败). This may help us succeed in the future. So we must know how to be a good loser.
We must not be afraid of losing. When we lose, just take it with a smile and look on the bright side of it. Failure can’t be avoided in our life. Edison failed 10,000 times before he invented the light bulb(灯泡). When he was asked how he felt, he said that he hadn’t failed 10,000 times but had learned 10,000 things which didn’t work. We must know that history is full of examples of men and women who achieved success, although they failed many times.
Losing is not very bad. We must accept our failure and learn to take advantage of it. Remember that it can be helpful. Take action to walk out of it. When we lose, think about what we did and how we can improve. If someone else can help, we’ll be lucky enough. Maybe he or she has been through the same experience before. Many people enjoy helping others solve problems. This can save us a lot of time in learning how to avoid the same mistakes in the future.
We should face our failure when we lose. There is only one winner in every competition. Some win, while some lose. That is a usual way of life. If we offer our congratulations(祝贺) to the winners and share their happiness, we won’t feel sorry for our failure.
In a word, being a good loser will help us to succeed in life. It might be painful at the beginning, but there are many advantages. Good losers set examples to us, and most importantly, they finally win.
( ) 33. What can we learn from every failure according to the passage?

A. Because he got help from others.
B. Because he avoided possible mistakes.
C. Because he saw the bright side of losing.
( ) 35. What does the writer advise the losers to do in a competition?
A. Express the regrets. B. Forget the failure. C. Share the winners’ joy.
( ) 36. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Ideas about How to Avoid Mistakes
B. Advice on How to Be a Good Loser
C. Advantages of Both Success and Failure

There is no doubt that technology has had a big influence on our lives. People from all around the world can now talk to each other almost at once on mobile phones and the Internet. People can easily solve their problems with the help of computers and the world wide web. With technology, it seems that the world is more connected now than ever before. Even so, there have been worries about technology making people feel lonely and disconnected from others around them.
So does this mean that technology makes us lonely? In my opinion, it is hard to say Yes or No.
It’s true that humans need communication with each other. If we depend on technology too much to communicate, this can badly influence our mental(心理的) health. For me, technology is a tool. And just like any other kind of tool—like scissors, a pencil or a ruler, for example, it depends on how we use it: in a right way or in a right place. Take social media(社交媒体) as an example. If you only use it to compare yourself with others, you might feel sad and lonely. But if you use it as a tool to connect with friends and family or to start a new community to talk about your hobbies and interests, the loneliness will turn into love and friendship.
When you feel lonely after staring at your computer screen all day, maybe you can use that technology to reach out to a reliable(可靠的) friend and invite him or her out for lunch or a coffee.
( ) 37. What’s the Chinese meaning of the underlined word “disconnected” in Paragraph 1?
A. 促进 B. 分离 C. 连接
( ) 38. According to the writer, technology is __________.
A. a kind of tool B. an influence C. a way of communication
( ) 39. When we use technology to__________, we can find love and friendship.
A. argue with others B. connect with others C. compare with others
( ) 40. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. Social media is important to us.
B. Technology can be good and bad to us.
C. People need to communicate with each other.

Snow forests make up about 30% of the world’s total forest areas. These wonderful woodlands are not as famous as the Amazon rainforests, but they are just as important.
Snow forests are found in the far north of the world, in areas that are quite cold and usually have a lot of snowfall. They lie across parts of Canada, China, Finland, Japan, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the US. Snow forests have very cold winters that can last up to six months. But even so, they are home to many kinds of animals, including foxes, mice and wolves. In the US and Canada, as many as five billion birds from more than 300 species live in the snow forests in the breeding(繁殖) season.
These woodlands perform an important job: helping to take in harmful gases. The gases are given off by burning coal, oil and gas, which can cause climate change. However, snow forests are facing several problems. Trees are being cut down faster and faster for their wood, which can be used for buildings. Some forests are being cleared to make space for new roads and houses, or to allow coal and gas industries to grow. What’s worse, as the world gets warmer, Canada and Russia have seen terrible fires spread through the forests.
Luckily, environmental and wildlife groups around the world are working hard to protect snow forests. This means that cutting down trees is controlled in some areas and the forests are seen as areas of special scientific interest. When wood is needed, replanting plans and careful forest management help to reduce the human influence so that the forests are managed in a way that they can survive and regrow.
( ) 41. What do we know about snow forests from this passage?
A. They need a long time to grow up.
B. They produce best wood for buildings.
C. They are important to many kinds of animals.
( ) 42. What mainly causes snow forests to be in danger?
A. Heavy snowfall. B. Air pollution. C. Human activities .
( ) 43. What does the writer think of snow forests’ future?
A. Hopeful. B. Awful. C. Wonderful.
( ) 44. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To call on us to protect snow forests.
B. To invite people to visit snow forests.
C. To compare rainforests with snow forests.

In the past 20 years, astronauts have done nearly 3,000 scientific experiments aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Many breakthroughs have been made, including research on drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, and the effects of living in space on the human body. There was a time when China had little chance to do such research. Now China can.
On July 24, 2022, Wentian, the first space lab of China’s space station, blasted off(升空). It later docked(对接) with the Tianhe core module(天和核心舱), reported China Daily.
Wentian will be mainly used for studying space life sciences. Astronauts will use fruit flies, zebra fish, thale cress(拟南芥) and other animals and plants to study how they grow and age in space. Experiments on cells and organs(器官)in weightless conditions will also be done. “These studies could pave the way for humans to live in space and the future treatment of diseases in space,” said Zhao Liping, chief designer of the Wentian Space Application System.
The lab is open to scientists from other countries, too. Canadian cancer scientist Tricia Larose posted on Twitter that she would “happily” travel to the Tiangong Space Station to do research. Larose’s project of “tumors(肿瘤) in space” was chosen as one of nine projects to be carried out in Wentian. It was chosen by the United Nations and China from 42 applicants(申请者) from 27 countries. Her project tries to study if tumor growth could slow or stop in weightless conditions and how space radiation affects our DNA.
Besides Wentian, the other space lab, Mengtian, blasted off in October, 2022. More than 1,000 experiments are expected to be carried out in these two space labs.
( ) 45. What can we know from the first paragraph?
A. China has done 3,000 scientific experiments in space lab.
B. China has seldom done the research on drugs for Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.
C. China made many breakthroughs on the effects of living in space.
( ) 46. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The first space lab of China’s space station blasted off.
B. The first Chinese space lab will be used for space life science research.
C. The experiments in the space lab will study the future treatment of diseases.
( ) 47. Who can go to the Chinese space lab Wentian?
A. Any Chinese.
B. Only Chinese scientists.
C. Scientists from all over the world.
( ) 48. From which section can you probably read the passage on the newspaper?
A. Sports. B. Business. C. Science.
