A
Barry Tan was a very successful businessman. His name was often in the newspapers.
One day a newspaper reporter asked him, “What is the secret to your success?”
Barry thought for a few moments and then said, “I eat a special kind of fish.”
“You eat a special kind of fish!” the reporter said, “What does that do?”
“It helps me think better,” Barry said.
“What kind of fish is it?” the reporter asked.
“Give me fifty dollars and come back tomorrow. I’ll have some for you.”
The reporter gave Barry fifty dollars and returned the next day.
“Have you got my special fish?” she asked.
“Yes. Come into the house. It’s in the fridge.”
Barry took the reporter into his kitchen. He opened the fridge and took out a very small fish.
“Here you are. Eat this for your dinner.”
The next day the reporter called on Barry again.
“Did you eat the fish?” Barry asked her.
“Yes, I fried it.”
“Good. Do you feel different today?”
“No, I don’t. And I think that fifty dollars was a lot to pay for such a small fish.”
“Well done!” Barry said. “You see, the fish is working. You’re using your head now.”
17. Why did the reporter visit Barry on the first day?
A. To learn his secret to success. B. To buy his special fish.
C. To have a big dinner with him. D. To sell him newspapers.
18. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in the fourth line?
A. Eating a special fish. B. Being a businessman.
C. Thinking for a few moments. D. Appearing in the newspaper.
19. What did Barry mean by saying “the fish is working” in the end?
A. The reporter became hard-working overnight.
B. The reporter began to think on her own.
C. The fish made the reporter rich and famous.
D. The fish kept the reporter from getting sick.
20. What can we learn from this story?
A. Seeing is believing. B. All roads lead to Rome.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Think twice before you act.
A 18. A 19. B 20. D
根据原文“One day a newspaper reporter asked him, ‘What is the secret to your success?’”,可以得知记者登门拜访Barry的初衷是打探他成功的秘诀。“To buy his special fish”意为“购买他特殊的鱼”、“To have a big dinner with him”意为“和他享用一顿丰盛晚餐”、“To sell him newspapers”意为“向他售卖报纸”,三者不符合记者来访的目的。
结合上文记者的感叹“You eat a special kind of fish!”,代词that指代前文发生的这件事,也就是“Eating a special fish”,意为“吃一种特殊的鱼”。“Being a businessman”意为“成为一名商人”、“Thinking for a few moments”意为“思索片刻”、“Appearing in the newspaper”意为“登上报纸”,三者不在就近指代的范围内。
“The reporter became hard-working overnight”意为“记者一夜之间变得勤奋”、“The fish made the reporter rich and famous”意为“鱼让记者名利双收”、“The fish kept the reporter from getting sick”意为“鱼帮记者规避病痛”,三者都不符合故事暗藏的深意。
“Seeing is believing”意为“眼见为实”、“All roads lead to Rome”意为“条条大路通罗马”、“Practice makes perfect”意为“熟能生巧”,这三句谚语和文章传达的思想不匹配。

White、Mrs.
逐一核验选项,依据第三段“must be 16+”可知不适合小孩,A 项错误;依据首段“rules say visitors should keep a distance”可知 B 项错误;依据第三段“17 miles from central London”可知 C 项错误;依据第二段“They take bikes and people to the top... Then riders only go downhill”可知 D 项正确

In October 1937, a newly published book became a hit in London, with more than 100,000 copies sold in just a few weeks. That book was Red Star Over China by Edgar Snow, an American journalist who first made the Communist Party of China (CPC) known to the world.
[Excerpt (节选)]
The food was served by two young boys wearing uniforms several sizes too large for them, and peaked Red caps that kept dropping down over their eyes. They looked at me sourly at first, but after a few minutes I managed to get a friendly smile from one of them. Encouraged by this success, I called to him as he went past.
“Wei [hey]!” I called, “bring us some cold water.” The youth simply ignored (不理睬) me. In a few minutes I tried the other one, with no better result.
Then I saw that Li K’e-nung, head of the communications section, was laughing at me behind his thick glasses. He advised, “you can call him ‘comrade’ [tong-zhi] — but you cannot greet him with ‘Wei’! In here everybody is a comrade. These boys are Young Vanguards (先锋), and they are here because they volunteer to help us. They are not servants. They are future Red warriors (战士).”
Just then the cold (boiled) water did arrive. “Thank you,” I said, “— comrade!” The Young Vanguard looked at me. “Never mind that,” he said, “you don’t thank a comrade for a thing like that!”
My opinion:
The story has helped me understand 4 we should learn from mistakes.
