A
If you’re laughing during your English lesson, that’s probably a good thing. Besides making a class more fun, humour (幽默) can be a good language learning tool.
First, there are good reasons to keep stress levels low in the language classroom. People usually learn a language and use it much more easily when they are relaxed — and what reduces stress more greatly than laughter? And in a class, sharing a joke can help students and teachers build a friendly atmosphere (氛围) that encourages confidence.
Also, a student named Leo shared: “I used to get totally confused by English grammar, but then my teacher showed us a funny meme (段子). Laughing at that meme made the grammar rule clear to me immediately.” Research has found that humour helps our brains feel good, making us want to learn and remember better.
Humour can be a test of your language skills, too. Understanding jokes requires not just some basic knowledge of words and sentences — you need to know why they’re funny! For example, “Why was six afraid of seven? Because seven ate (eight) nine!” A lot of jokes are based on wordplay (双关语), so the listener may need to know more than one meaning of a word to understand the jokes.
It’s no surprise that both students and teachers expect some humour in language lessons. But what kinds of jokes are the most popular? One study asked nearly 250 foreign language learners what they thought. The researchers found that students really liked it when teachers made funny comments during lessons. Students also liked funny cartoons and memes.
11. Which graph shows the link between humour and stress?
A. B. C. D.
12. What did Leo’s experience show about English learning?
A. Learning English grammar needs to do research first.
B. Speaking during school classes reduces student stress.
C. Laughing at a funny meme helps make grammar rules clear.
D. Doing boring exercises improves textbook understanding.
13. Why can humour test your language skills according to Paragraph 4?
A. Because jokes are something that only local speakers can get.
B. Because jokes are about spelling and writing English words.
C. Because jokes require excellent speaking and listening skills.
D. Because understanding jokes needs rich language knowledge.
14. What suggestion can teachers take from the study?
A. Never tell jokes in class. B. Use more funny comments.
C. Tell language stories to students. D. Teach students about wordplay.
15. Where is the passage most probably taken from?
A. A science fiction novel. B. A travel magazine.
C. An education magazine. D. An English dictionary.
B
A night from my childhood remains clear in my memory: I was standing by a pool before a village in Henan. Next to me stood many other people, both adults and children. Together, we looked at the clear night sky, where a tiny star slowly sailed across the dark sky.
It was China’s first artificial satellite (人造卫星): Dongfanghong I. The date was April 25, 1970, and I was seven. Just a week earlier, Apollo 13 safely returned from a journey to the Moon. It had been nine years since the first astronaut left the Earth. But I didn’t know any of that. As I looked at that tiny star, my heart was full of curiosity.
The adults said that the satellite wasn’t like an airplane because it flew outside of the Earth. Back then the dust and smoke didn’t pollute the air, and the velvet sky was especially clear, with the Milky Way (银河) clearly seen. In my mind, the stars that filled the sky weren’t much farther away than the tiny satellite, so I thought it was flying among them. I even worried that it might run into one as it passed through them.
A few years passed before I understood how far it is from that satellite to the stars. Back then I was reading a popular set of basic science books called A Hundred Thousand Whys. I learned the idea of a light-year (光年). I tried to picture the endless and icy darkness of space—so huge and deep that my mind couldn’t follow. A wave of fear and wonder flooded me, yet left behind a strange and electric joy. Even today, the idea of a light-year can still paint lively pictures in my mind and excite a deep sense of wonder and shock.
Satellite, stars, the Milky Way, a light-year…These seemingly (似乎) unconnected things formed the early part of my life, and also influenced the science fiction I write today.
—Liu Cixin

What do Doraemon and Chinese medical expert Zhong Nanshan have in common? Well, they can both be found on artist Lang Jiaziyu’s desk. Lang is a young master of dough figurines, known as “mian ren” (面人) in Chinese.
Lang became interested in dough figurines when he was five. He grew up watching his father create lively figurines. The craft looked so magical that he wanted to try it himself. His first creation took two and a half hours but looked awful. He tried to make a cute doll, but it turned out to be an ugly, middle-aged man. Though his first try was not pleasing, he had already fallen in love with the craft.
Lang’s family has been making dough figurines for three generations. His grandfather, “Mianren Lang” (面人郎), turned dough figurines from simple street toys into real works of art and exhibited his works abroad. Lang's father and aunt are also skilled masters. With their hard work, the craft was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. Influenced by his family, Lang practiced hard and gradually improved his skills. In 2022, his works won high praise at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Today, many traditional crafts are in danger of disappearing. Few young people know about them. Lang often feels low-spirited because he has no peers to talk with about his craft. As more people choose “modern” jobs, the craft of dough figurines needs new inheritors.
To keep the traditional craft alive, Lang works hard to promote the art of Dough Figurine Lang on social media. He brings pop culture into his creations. Some of his figurines are based on cartoon characters or famous people. He also shares short videos of his craft online. Lang hopes that in this way, more young people will be drawn to the craft and pass it down to future generations.
21. What made Lang Jiaziyu become interested in dough figurines?
A. Watching his father create figurines. B. The history of dough figurines.
C. The teaching from his father. D. The need to help his family.
22. Why does the passage mention (提及) Lang’s family?
A. To show the family’s great influence on Lang.
B. To describe the grandfather’s exhibition abroad.
C. To explain why the craft won a national honour.
D. To list the family’s three generations of masters.
23. What does the underlined phrase “new inheritors” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Modern jobs. B. Social media. C. Popular culture. D. Young craftspeople.
24. What quality does Lang show by bringing pop culture into his dough figurines?
A. His patience in learning skills. B. His honesty in making videos.
C. His creativity in traditional art. D. His bravery in facing challenges.
25. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Traditional Crafts in Danger B. Dough Figurines Kept Young
C. How to Make Dough Figurines D. A Family of Dough Figurine Makers

C

Then, my second design is about holding a “Traditional Craft Show”. Students are encouraged to make paper-cuts in person and introduce them while showing their works.
