Virtues in Action: Small Kindness Makes a Big Difference
Kindness is a virtue that lights up our daily life. We can practice it in small ways: holding the door for others, offering a helping hand to classmates in trouble, or simply greeting people with a warm smile. These small acts cost nothing but bring great warmth to those around us, making our campus a more harmonious place.
I call on every student to start with small kind acts. Together, we can make our school a better place for everyone.

参考范文
Then I noticed a slow-moving pickup truck approaching in the distance. My heart leaped with hope and I waved wildly at it. To our great relief, the truck slowed down and pulled over. A middle-aged man with a warm smile stepped out, asking what had happened. After hearing our trouble, he immediately opened his toolbox and checked the engine. It turned out he was a mechanic on his way back home. Despite the dusty road and burning sun, he patiently worked on our car, refusing to let me help him.
Soon our broken car was fixed. The kind man wiped the sweat off his forehead and said we could continue our journey. When my mother offered to pay him, he shook his head and said it was what anyone would do. Watching his truck disappear down the road, we felt a warmth far greater than any seaside scenery could bring. Although we arrived at the resort later than planned, that unexpected kindness made our family trip even more memorable and precious.

W:Great. It can be useful since you'll move to Mexico soon.
第10段录音
Hello, everyone. I'm going to tell you about my gap year. I decided I would take a gap year when I was in my last year of secondary school. My parents wanted me to go straight to university. They wanted me to get a degree and start working, but I didn't want that. I felt I should get some experience of life away from school and family. I've heard that some students are so shocked by the changes in their lifestyle when they leave home that they give up university after only a month or two. I didn't want to risk that happening to me, so I borrowed lots of travel books and started to plan my special year. Whenever I got stressed with my schoolwork, I would look at the program I'd made. It kept me going and really encouraged me to work hard. Of course, all this would cost me money, even if I stayed in the most basic of hotels and traveled by bus or train, not by plane. So I started to look for jobs I could do on my way around the world. And that's how I finalized my tour. By going to the countries where I could get employment.

Boyan Slat spent his early childhood in Delft, a historic university town known for its creative atmosphere. From the age of two, he showed a natural talent for invention, taking part in projects like building tree houses in his backyard. This early creativity was probably influenced by his father’s artistic career.
His multicultural background — mixing Dutch, British, and Croatian influences — introduced him to different ways of thinking from a young age, shaping a wide worldview that focused on problem-solving and global awareness. During his teenage years, this view began to connect with his interests in oceanic environments, leading him to believe that large-scale technological solutions might be possible.
While on vacation in Greece at 16 years old, Boyan went scuba diving and saw more plastic bags than fish in the sea, which left him thinking, “Why can’t we just clean this up?” He started looking further into the problem, considered possible technological solutions to ocean plastic pollution, and worked hard to get practical knowledge through a school project that helped develop his ideas. In late 2012, he presented these ideas at a TEDx conference.
At first, armed with only €300 of saved pocket money, he struggled to make progress. However, everything changed in February 2013 when his TEDx video suddenly became a hit online, and the attention that followed allowed Boyan to found The Ocean Cleanup. Boyan then gathered a team of volunteers and launched a crowdfunding drive, which funded a year-long feasibility study(可行性研究) — the first real step in bringing Boyan’s technological solutions to life and turning his dream into reality.
Today, The Ocean Cleanup is actively cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and has been using interceptors(拦截器) in some of the world’s most polluted rivers to prevent plastic from reaching the ocean in the first place.
24. What shaped Boyan Slat’s wide worldview?
A. His father’s artistic career.
B. His natural talent for invention.
C. His multicultural life background.
D. His interests in oceanic environments.
25. What inspired Boyan to work on ocean plastic solutions?
A. A voluntary clean-up activity.
B. A school project about ocean pollution.
C. A shocking diving experience in Greece.
D. A successful TEDx talk he gave in 2012.
26. How did Boyan get the chance to found The Ocean Cleanup?
A. By launching a crowdfunding drive.
B. By saving his pocket money over years.
C. By carrying out a year-long feasibility study.
D. By gaining public attention through his video.
27. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To celebrate achievements in ocean cleanup.
B. To describe how a teen turned an idea into action.
C. To introduce a study of the ocean plastic pollution.
D. To explore effective methods to clear ocean plastic.

A team of engineers in China has achieved something amazing. They have moved and returned a 7,500-ton historic building complex(建筑群) in Shanghai — with the help of tiny robots.
The project began in 2023 when a company was tasked with building an underground shopping center, parking area, and subway lines under the Huayanli complex. Built in the 1920s, the three brick-and-wood buildings are classic examples of Shikumen-style architecture. Houses that mixed traditional Chinese courtyard designs and Western styles were once common across Shanghai. However, few of these buildings remain today, making their preservation important.
To protect the buildings while clearing space for the work below, the team had to relocate them. But the buildings are weak and the streets are too narrow, which makes traditional moving methods — like using cranes and jacks impossible. The engineers needed a more creative solution.
The team began with a detailed 3D scan of the site to produce exact plans of the relocation. Battery-powered drilling robots then worked around the buildings’ base, clearing soil to make space for the lifting robots below. The soil was removed using a network of conveyor belts. Next came 432 “walking” robots. Each was small enough to fit in a hand yet strong enough to lift 10 tons. They were carefully placed below the buildings. Working together, they moved the heavy buildings forward at a slow speed, about 10 meters per day. In total, the buildings were relocated about 48 meters to the west and 46 meters to the north, clearing the way for the work underground.
After the basic underground work was finished, it was time to move the buildings back. The return journey began on May 19, 2025. Over the next twenty days, the robots slowly moved the buildings into place, finishing the task on June 7, 2025. With the buildings safely returned, work on the underground project continues. The effort emphasizes how modern technology can preserve historic architecture — even during major urban(城区) development.
28. Why was the historic building complex moved?
A. To build underground facilities.
B. To test the performance of tiny robots.
C. To combine traditional Chinese and Western styles.
D. To repair the brick-and-wood structure of the buildings.
29. What can we know about the relocation work?
A. A small walking robot can lift 10 tons.
B. Lifting robots dug soil around the base of the buildings.
C. The buildings were moved about 10 meters at a slow speed.
D. 3D scanning technology was used to monitor the whole plan.
30. What does the underlined word “emphasizes” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Proposes. B. Predicts. C. Stresses. D. Assesses.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Culture Hidden in Narrow Streets
B. A Creative Way to Relocate Historic Buildings
C. How 3D Scanning Improves Construction Plans
D. Tiny Robots Reconstruct Old Shanghai Buildings

Spring for some quality shades
33 It’s one of the biggest things in our environment to have an impact on the eyes. To shield(保护) your eyes, wear sunglasses certified to block out 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB light.
Take a break from screens
There’s no scientific evidence that the light from electronic screens damages eyes. But staring at a screen can leave eyes fatigued and may even blur vision. The National Institutes of Health recommends taking a break every 20 minutes to look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. 34 Therefore, limiting screen time remains our best choice.
Stop those bad habits
First, smoking isn’t just bad for your lungs; it can harm eyes too. It causes dry eyes, makes thyroid eye disease worse and correlates with severe macular degeneration. 35 Rubbing makes inflammation worse. “The more you rub, the more itchy your eyes will get. And rubbing has been linked to thinning and bulging of the cornea. It can lead to infections.”
Repair the air
Indoor heating and air conditioning can dry out the air and the eyes. Outdoor cold and wind can be drying, too, while pollution and allergens can cause discomfort.
Finally, don’t forget to see an eye specialist for a checkup. 36
A. Also, try not to rub your eyes.
B. We may also suffer from eye diseases.
C. We apply sunscreen to protect our skin.
D. Protecting the eyes from sunlight is very important.
E. All eye problems are best treated when found early.
F. Eye checkups are unnecessary if you have good vision.
G. Glasses that block blue light don’t seem to do the trick.

My whole family was heading for a long-awaited seaside resort holiday during the weekend. I had been looking forward to this wonderful trip for several months, dreaming of walking on soft golden beaches, listening to the gentle sound of rolling waves and enjoying the charming seaside scenery. It was going to be my first trip to the sea, and every cell in my body was filled with excitement.
This trip held extremely special meaning for me. My mother was always buried in endless housework and tiring part-time jobs to support our ordinary family. She was occupied all year round and barely had spare time to stay and chat with me. Therefore, I had long hoped for a complete and relaxing family trip, where I could accompany (陪伴) her wholeheartedly and share all my daily thoughts and inner feelings with her.
The long-expected departure day finally arrived. I carefully sorted out my favorite swimwear and sun-protective clothes, packed a delicate notebook to record interesting travel stories. I stuffed all my necessities into the backpack and checked it over and over again, unable to hide my joy.
We set off happily after a simple breakfast. The journey was smooth and pleasant with beautiful roadside scenery in the first few hours. However, the car suddenly made a strange loud noise and shook fiercely unexpectedly. We had no choice but to pull over slowly to the roadside. My mother checked the car carefully and confirmed that it broke down completely. We were stuck on a remote (偏远的) deserted highway, with no shops or repair stations nearby.
Mother tried repeatedly to stop passing cars and ask for help, yet countless vehicles just sped by quickly without a single stop. Strong disappointment and helplessness gradually surrounded our whole family. Despite her long-standing leg pain that troubled her for years, she insisted on (坚持) walking miles to the nearest town for help, firmly determined not to let this sudden accident spoil our precious and long-awaited family holiday.
