Real Advice from a High School Senior
It can seem like a whole new world when you first enter high school. High school isn’t exactly like the movies, but it will shape you in unexpected ways. I can tell you for sure this as a current senior who has experienced happy and sad moments and everything in between. Here are some useful pieces of advice I’ve learned that I wish someone had shared with me before I started my first year of high school.
1.Don’t Stress About “Fitting In”
The pressure to immediately find the right group of friends is a common part of Grade 9. In actuality, you may not always stay with the same people you began with, and that's okay. New chances come, friendships change, and by being true to yourself, you will naturally find people who match you. Be more honest and less worried about fitting in.
2.Get Involved Early
Join clubs, sports, music, theater, volunteer work, or anything else that catches your interest. One of the best ways to meet people, find hobbies, and become more confident is to take part in activities. Try something new in your first year, even if you're not sure about it.
In the worst case, you find it’s not right for you. In the best case, you find something you will keep doing for the next four years.
3.Learn to Manage Your Time
Putting things off will really bring you trouble in high school. It’s easy to feel too busy because of after-school activities, homework, and plans with friends. By using a notebook to plan, setting reminders, and breaking big tasks into small ones, you can build good habits early. Keeping your work tidy now will save you lots of stress later.
4.Don’t Compare Yourself to Everyone Else
When others get perfect grades, have a full list of school activities, or get along well with everyone, you may feel like they have everything sorted out. Comparing yourself will only make you lose heart. Everyone has different troubles and strong points. Focus on your own goals and progress instead of what others are doing.
5.Don’t Be Afraid to Fail
Failure is an important part of growth, whether you fail a hard math test, don’t pass a selection test, or can’t get a student leader position. See it as a chance to learn, not an ending. High school is a safe place to try new things and find out who you are.
6.Enjoy the Little Moments
Although graduation seems far away, your first year of high school passes much faster than you think. Go to football games, take photos with your friends, laugh at funny school cheering parties, and enjoy those small, ordinary moments. You will keep those memories forever.

Passage 1
Switching from high school to college can be a big change for students, with many moving away from family and friends for the first time. 1 .
Be prepared to be treated as an adult
The transition from high school to college is more than just a move to a higher level of education. 2 . And although students may not feel quite like adults, that’s how colleges and universities will treat them. Mail and information surrounding grades and financial aid will go to students instead of parents.
Embrace time-management tools
College offers a sense of independence that many students didn’t have in their high school years. 3 . But there are plenty of digital tools designed for students, and a little organization can go a long way in making sure time is used wisely. Smartphone apps and tools can help students limit time on entertainment and social media and maintain their study schedules. 4
College pushes students to develop strong communication. From group projects to communicating with professors, an ability to convey ideas clearly and work collaboratively will serve students well. That includes dealing with social issues. Part of learning as an adult is learning to have relationships and conversations with people that are different from you.
Make a plan for managing your money
5 . They should speak with their parents about finances and create a budget. Because expenses can add up, it’s wise to look for ways to save money. Be mindful of spending and plan to be more selective about how and where to spend.
A.Polish your people skills
B.Research ways to get involved
C.Students should start getting used to the increased workload
D.University students may find themselves in financial difficulties
E.In many ways, it represents the change from childhood into adulthood
F.For those stressing over this new life chapter, there are ways to prepare
G.Balancing the academic and social demands of college can be a challenge

1.标题预判主旨:每段小标题直接概括段落核心,做题前先圈小标题;
2.指代线索定位:it/they/those/this new life chapter 等代词必须往前找对应名词;
3.转折逻辑标记:but/however 前后语义相反,可快速锁定空处含义;
1.词汇复现法:选项和原文出现同根词 / 同义词(adult-adulthood;finance-financial)直接锁定答案;
2.代词匹配法:后文出现 they,前文空一定出现复数名词;
3.主题统一原则:小标题是理财,空格必须和金钱、财务相关;

Passage 2
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.
Plan your time carefully.
When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly.
When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about the tests.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.
1.What is the best title of the passage? (within 10 words)
2.Please explain the underlined phrase “set aside” in English. (within 5 words)

4.Who is the passage written for? (Within 10 words)
5.Which suggestion do you think is the best for you? Why? (Within 30 words.)

3.What kind of attitude shall we have about the tests according to the passage? (Within 20 words)
4.Who is the passage written for? (Within 10 words)
5.Which suggestion do you think is the best for you? Why? (Within 30 words.)
1.How to Become a Better Student? 2.Reserve or save. 3.We should not be overly worried because tests help us remember knowledge. 4.Average students wanting to improve. 5.I think “Make good use of your time in class” is the best, because listening carefully in class means less work later and helps me understand better.
根据首段中的“Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how. (任何人只要愿意,都能成为更好的学生。方法如下 。)”可知,本文旨在介绍成为好学生的方法,“How to Become a Better Student? (如何成为更好学生)”适合作本文标题。故填How to Become a Better Student?
根据画线短语set aside前面的句子“After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. (列出清单后,你应该制定一个时间安排表。首先安排好吃饭、睡觉、穿衣等的时间。然后确定一个合适且固定的学习时间。)”可推断,set aside包含“预留”之意。故填Reserve or save.
根据倒数第二段“The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you to remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried. (考试的目的是检验你对某一学科知识的掌握程度。考试有助于你记住新知识。如果你没有通过考试,世界也不会因此而毁灭,所以不要过度担忧。)”可知,我们不要过度担心考试,因为考试帮助我们记住知识。故填We should not be overly worried because tests help us remember knowledge.
根据首段中的“Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. (也许你是个成绩一般的学生。你可能觉得自己永远都成不了尖子生。然而,这未必如此。任何人,只要愿意,都能成为更好的学生。)”可知,本文的写作对象是想要提高的普通学生。故填Average students wanting to improve.
Make good use of your time in class. I think “Make good use of your time in class” is the best, because listening carefully in class means less work later and helps me understand better.
