“When side by side two rabbits go, who can tell the buck (雄兔) from the doe (雌兔)?” China’s Yang Jingru and Li Jinzi “played the buck and the doe” in the women’s 1,500 m short track speed skating (短道速滑) event of the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
They used the classic “rabbit strategy (策略)”. The key to the “rabbit strategy” is teamwork of two skaters. One skater runs very fast from the start, while the other stays behind. This is different from the usual 1,500m speed skating strategy of keeping the same speed and then speeding up in the last few turns.
Using the “rabbit strategy”, after the first lap, Yang suddenly skated at full speed. She skated one lap faster than the other skaters and stayed at the back of the group, but nobody noticed it.
Working with Yang, Li changed between the front and the back in the first half of the race. This made the other skaters wonder who was the “leading rabbit”. In fact, when the bell rang and showed that there was only one lap to go, everyone had two laps left except Yang.
The two Chinese short track speed skaters cleverly used the “rabbit strategy”. They won both the gold medal and the silver medal, making it a classic example in the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
5. What’s the key to the “rabbit strategy”?

You may have been to some amazing museums, but have you ever been to a museum of poop (粪便)? Last year, a museum called Poozeum opened in a state of America. It houses about 7,000 poop fossils (化石).
Poop fossils can be millions of years old. When ancient animals pooped, their waste sometimes got covered up by soil or sand. Over time, the poop turned into rock. These rocks are called poop fossils.
The Poozeum was started by George Frandsen. He has been collecting poop fossils since he was 18 years old. The poop fossils in the museum are from many different animals, including dinosaurs, sharks and even insects. One of the fossils is the largest poop fossil from a meat-eater. The fossil is over 0.6 meters long and 15 centimeters thick. It weighs more than 9 kilograms. “It’s filled with pieces of bone,” said Frandsen.
The museum has “farts (臭气)” from insects, too. These fossils were created when insects got trapped in tree resin (树脂). As the insects died, they released gas. The gas also got trapped in the resin. Over time, the resin hardened into amber. In this way, the insects and their “farts” have “lived on” for many years.
Poop fossils may look funny or messy, but they can tell scientists a lot. These fossils show what animals ate and how healthy they were. They can also help scientists learn about the environment at the time the poop was left.
9. How did poop fossils form in nature?
A. People made them with rock and soil.
B. Animals’ waste was covered and slowly turned into rock.
C. Dinosaurs’ bones mixed with sand.
D. Tree resin stuck dead insects directly.
10. Which of the following is true about the largest meat-eater poop fossil?

About 1,101 manatees (海牛) died in Florida in 2021, many from hunger. So government wildlife experts came up with a plan to give food to the manatees. They decided to feed them green vegetables like lettuce (生菜) and cabbage. Ron Mezich, an expert, said, “We’re making a difference.” By the end of 2021, they had served up more than 193,000 pounds of lettuce to hungry manatees.
Manatees are huge sea animals that mainly eat seagrass and other plants that live in the sea. That’s one reason why they’re sometimes called “sea cows”. Since 1967, Florida’s manatees have been on the US government’s list of endangered animals. Most dangers to manatees come from humans. One of the biggest problems facing the animals is boats. Thousands of manatees were hit or killed by boats. Another problem is sea pollution. At one point, there were only about 2,000 manatees left in Florida. With protection, the number increased. In 2016, there were more than 6,000 manatees.
However, as seagrass began to disappear, the number of manatees keeps going down again. Warming seas with polluted water have created huge algae (藻) on the ocean’s surface. The algae stops the sunlight, so the seagrass dies. In Indian River Lagoon, where manatees often go in winter, about 90% of the seagrass beds there have died off. Florida will work to help restore (恢复) seagrass beds. But that will take time. Scientists still worry that more manatees could die in the coming years.
45. What do manatees mainly feed on?
_______________________________________________________
46. What problems do manatees face according to the passage?
_______________________________________________________
47. Why is the seagrass dying according to the passage?

There are many colors in nature. But do you believe that a color has weight? I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. ____13____
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then, cover one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. ____14____ It is certain that you’ll think the red one is a little heavier.
Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind. ____15____That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind.
____16____ Can you smell colors? Of course not. Then why did the scientists say so? That is because every color stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength (波长). It reaches our brain through sense organs According to this research, scientists said that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill.
A. Now hold the boxes with your hands one by one.
B. People are also interested in the weight of colors.
C. The scientists told us that colors also have smell.
D. If you don’t believe it, you may do a small test.
E. So he did many tests and at last he got the result.
D 14. A 15. E 16. C
根据前文“But do you believe that a color has weight? ... But I am afraid you are wrong.” D“If you don’t believe it, you may do a small test.”
根据前文“Then, cover one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper.” 后文“It is certain that you’ll think the red one is a little heavier.” A“Now hold the boxes with your hands one by one.”
根据前文“A scientist found that different colors have different weight in a man’s mind.” 后文“That is to say, every color has its own weight in our mind.” E“So he did many tests and at last he got the result.”
根据后文“Can you smell colors? Of course not.” C“The scientists told us that colors also have smell.”
