Join Us as a Digital Connect Volunteer
Nowadays, many elderly people struggle with modern digital devices. A volunteer program called “Digital Connect” is here to offer them practical help, and it is now looking for student volunteers.
Basic Skills Coaching
Volunteers offer one-on-one coaching at the Central Library every Saturday morning. They help with basics like enlarging text and making video calls, and also help them understand data from smart devices, such as health metrics (健康指标) from a watch. This role calls for patience and the ability to give clear and simple explanations.
Online Safety Workshop
This program involves small group workshops at the North Hill Community Center on Sunday afternoons. Volunteers show seniors how to stay safe on online shopping sites, social networking apps, and in online chat rooms. This role is ideal for volunteers with a basic understanding of online safety and strong public speaking skills.
Digital Companion Visit
Volunteers are paired with a senior for weekly home visits, providing personalized tech help. Tasks include assisting with online shopping, booking medical appointments, and setting up new devices like health trackers. This program requires a basic safety check and seeks reliable (可靠的) and understanding volunteers.
Social Tech Hour
This is a casual social gathering at the Riverfront Cafe on Friday evenings. Volunteers facilitate discussions on new tech trends. The goal is to create a relaxed and open atmosphere for seniors to discover technology together. We look for volunteers who are enthusiastic about technology and able to make everyone feel welcome to join the conversation.
These programs help bridge the digital divide and build cross-generational friendships. Students who are interested can apply at www.volunteercity.org/digital-connect before July 15.

Each morning, the gentle tap of chisels echoes through a small workshop in Jingdezhen, China’s “Porcelain (瓷器) Capital”. Surrounded by piles of prepared clay and half-finished wares, at 72, Master Chen Guosheng sits before a spinning wheel. His hands steady as he shapes a lump of kaolin into a delicate porcelain vase. The motion looks easy, but it is the fruit of over 60 years of continuous practice.
Chen is a national-level inheritor of Jingdezhen handmade porcelain crafting, a craft listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. For more than 1,700 years, Jingdezhen has refined the art of porcelain making, turning raw clay into exquisite works of art. This craft relies on four core elements: pure local kaolin, hand-carved wooden molds, wood-fired kilns with precise temperature control, and age-old techniques passed down through master-apprentice traditions.
Born into a porcelain-making family, Chen started as an apprentice (学徒) at the age of 12, learning from his grandfather, a famous master of porcelain carving. He spent decades mastering every stage — from pressing and mixing clay and throwing pots to glazing and firing. For Chen, the soul of the craft lies in two things: accuracy in shaping and perseverance in firing.
“Every step must be exact, but the hand-throwing is what truly defines the work — each curve perfectly balanced, each piece unique,” Chen says. “Porcelain making is not just craft; it demands respect for the clay’s natural characteristics and firm sticking strictly to traditional methods to bring out its beauty.”
Even with modern ceramic machines, Chen insists many vital steps cannot be replaced. “Machines can shape clay quickly, but they cannot feel the clay’s texture (纹理) or adjust for tiny changes in wetness,” he explains. “Some skills look simple on the surface, but they take a lifetime of repetition to perfect.” He also devotes spare time to teaching young lovers of porcelain to carry on this precious heritage.
4. How did Chen Guosheng acquire his skills in porcelain making?
A. By copying famous works by himself. B. By attending professional training courses.
C. By studying advanced modern theories. D. By long-term systematic practical learning.
5. What is the key spirit of porcelain making in Chen’s eyes?
A. Speed and efficiency. B. Precision and patience.
C. Creativity and courage. D. Cooperation and effort.
6. Why can’t machines replace handmade porcelain work?
A. They work at a much slower speed. B. They fail to complete basic shaping.
C. They lack careful manual judgment. D. They ignore market fashion trends.
7. What does this passage mainly convey?
A. Craft needs long devotion. B. Effort surely brings success.
C. Old crafts are dying out gradually. D. Tradition outweighs modernity.
C
All cultures go through periods of change and some cultures change faster than others. For example, in the past 10 years, Chinese culture has changed very rapidly as Western goods have become very popular. Other countries, such as France, have created rules to prevent their culture from changing too quickly.
Even though cultures change at different paces, the causes of cultural change are quite similar around the world. One of these is technology and advancements in lifestyle. In the United States, new approaches to family planning helped parents to limit the size of their families. As a result, families grew smaller and the relationship between parents and their children became much closer in many families. On the other hand, new technology has also created emotional distance among families. With the invention of the television, video games, cellular phones, and computers, family members spend less time talking to each other and more time using different gadgets (小器具) to talk to their friends or socialize with people on the Internet.
Cultures change when they come into contact with other cultures. Migration, for example, often results in a cultural transformation for both migrants and the receiving society. At first, people in the receiving society may repudiate the differences brought by migrants, sometimes using rejection or one-sided views. Over time, however, cultural exchange occurs and both migrants and the receiving society influence each other.
Cultural change can occur due to larger events. For example, economic depression, war, and disasters can endanger societies, which must adapt to these challenges and events. Because of these changes in society, ideas and ways of life also affect the entire culture. For example, during World War II, many American men were sent far off to fight. Consequently, women were suddenly needed to work in the factories. As a result of this change, ideas about women in the workplace slowly began to change and it is no longer culturally acceptable to believe that they should not have the right to work.
8. What do some French rules aim to do?
A. Import more Western products. B. Slow down cultural change.
C. Encourage cultural communication. D. Learn from Chinese culture.
9. What can be concluded from paragraph 2?
A. Family members rarely chat over daily meals.
B. Gadgets make family communication better.
C. Small families have much weaker connections.
D. Tech causes a decline in face-to-face communication.
10. What does the underlined word “repudiate” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Resist. B. Tolerate. C. Change. D. Spread.
11. What will possibly be discussed next?
A. Changes happening in modern Chinese culture. B. Other possible reasons for cultural transformation.
C. Examples of successful women in many fields. D. Other cultural changes caused by World War II.

Scientists have long linked the Permian-Triassic mass extinction some 252 million years ago to vast volcanic eruptions in what is now Siberia. The resulting CO2 emissions rapidly sped up climate warming, contributing to the collapse of ecosystems. But climate warming alone cannot explain this extinction because when the tropics become too hot, species migrate to the cooler and higher latitudes (纬度). So, what wiped out almost all life on land, including plants and usually tough insects, has remained a source of mystery.
One new study, published in the journal Science and co-led by the University of Bristol and China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), has shed new light. Huge ocean warming El Nino events were the key, with global conditions swinging wildly over decades.
The scale of Permian-Triassic warming was revealed by studying oxygen isotopes (同位素) in the fossilized tooth material of tiny extinct swimming organisms called conodonts (牙形虫). By studying the temperature record of conodonts from around the world, the researchers were able to show remarkable temperature instability, especially in the low and mid latitudes.
Dr. Farnsworth, who used pioneering climate modeling to evaluate the findings, said, “The changes responsible for the climate patterns were profound because there were much more intense and prolonged El Nino events than witnessed today. Species were simply not equipped to adapt or evolve quickly enough.”
The results of the climate modeling also help explain the abundant charcoal (木炭) found in rock layers of that age. “Wildfires became very common in a drought-prone climate. Earth got stuck in a crisis state where the land was burning and the oceans were lifeless. There was nowhere to hide,” he added.
In recent years El Nino events have caused major changes. 2023-2024 was one of the hottest years on record globally due to a strong El Nino in the Pacific, which was further worsened by increased human-induced CO2, driving catastrophic droughts and fires around the world. Fortunately, events like this so far have only lasted one to two years at a time.
12. What can we know about the former volcanic-warming theory?
A. It is not fully reasonable. B. It is totally groundless.
C. It is put forward recently. D. It is widely challenged.
13. How did researchers learn ancient unstable global temperature?
A. By using old climate models. B. By comparing latitudes temperatures.
C. By observing ocean conditions. D. By examining related ancient fossils.
14. What happened some 252 million years ago according to the researchers?
①Species adapted fast to changes. ②Lots of charcoal came into being.
③Wildfires broke out frequently. ④The whole earth suffered severe damage.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ②③④ D. ①②③
15. What is implied in the last paragraph?
A. Seeing is believing. B. The cloud has a silver lining.
C. Every day is a leaf in history. D. Actions speak louder than words.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It is surprising that the people we love most are often the hardest to be emotionally honest with. As a therapist (心理治疗师), I meet many clients who can express their annoyances freely towards friends, yet become highly reserved when discussing family issues. They seldom show their real emotions to others. ____16____
This emotional suppression (压抑) comes not from the emotions themselves, but from the moral meanings attached to them. Many families are influenced by traditional values like respect for elders and family harmony. ____17____ Inner thoughts constantly remind them that their parents “did their best”. This is not indifference but an attempt to protect the precious parent-child bond. Many adults hold conflicting emotions — thankfulness and bitterness, love and disappointment — yet feel forced to deny these complexities.
Cultural differences in family boundaries further complicate this issue. Western psychology often praises emotional independence and clear personal boundaries as healthy. ____18____ Parental emotions strongly influence their children even in adulthood, and such emotional closeness is regarded as a normal expression of care and responsibility rather than unhealthy dependence.
As people mature, they begin to see parents as imperfect individuals shaped by their own struggles and limitations. ____19____ The reason is that acknowledging parental weaknesses may feel unacceptable in traditional contexts. However, accepting this helps let go of unrealistic expectations and gain inner freedom.
____20____ Grieving (为……而悲伤) unmet needs does not destroy love but clarifies it. Emotional maturity lies not in separating from family. Instead, it means we can hold love, thankfulness and hurt in the same relationship and make our family’s emotional story more complete.
A. This shift can be relieving but also uncomfortable.
B. All cultures share the same ideas about family relationships.
C. As a result, people often soften their feelings and justify their parents’ behavior.
D. They tend to highlight their parents’ devotion and hide their own unpleasant feelings.
E. They always argue with their parents about tiny things and refuse to listen to any advice.
F. However, in many other cultures, personal identity is deeply rooted in family relationships.
G. In working through these feelings, one grows more understanding — of oneself and of one’s parents.

Our friend Bob Faust had been fighting a serious illness for six months, having taken part in an experimental treatment program at the local medical center in Houston, Texas. Though the treatment was tough and exhausting, Bob never lost his courage and optimism. When my husband Art and I asked him whether he wanted to take a driving trip to Mexico to relax and recharge, he firmly said, “Yes.” His wife Debbie supported him wholeheartedly, and his doctors agreed, stopping his treatment temporarily to let him enjoy the journey. After Christmas, with the hope of a new year and Bob’s positive spirit guiding us, the four of us headed off on a memorable Mexican adventure.
We all wanted to make this trip special for Bob, as he had gone through great hardships from his illness. Unexpectedly, Bob lifted our spirits with his humor and enthusiasm. When we crossed the Tropic of Cancer (北回归线) and I asked for a photo stop, Art pulled over, Debbie laughed, and Bob playfully complained, “Cancer, oh, no.” We all burst out laughing right after.
As keen birdwatchers, we visited a flower-filled park famous for special birds. When Bob saw buzzards (秃鹫) circling above, he raised his fist (拳头) and shouted, “Go away! I’m not done yet!” His lively humor filled the trip with joy and made us forget his sufferings.
Our days in Mexico were filled with laughter and pleasant surprises, all thanks to Bob’s positive attitude. Once, returning from Tamaazunchale, Art spotted colorful birds in an orange garden and drove onto a private road. We enjoyed birdwatching for half an hour before a black truck approached — the landowner and his workers asked about our breaking in. Art explained anxiously, and luckily, the landowner welcomed us warmly and gave us two bags of delicious oranges, which Bob enjoyed deeply. On New Year’s Eve, we attended a local party, made friends with Bob’s help, and followed the grape-eating tradition. Back in our room, we celebrated with Bob’s special drinks, finishing two bottles happily before bed.

I’m writing to share my creative design for the Future Classroom Experience Zone to be held next month.
Equipped with holographic screens, the classroom allows teachers to display 3D models, making abstract knowledge vivid. Instead of fixed seats, movable desks are arranged freely, where students can discuss group projects instantly with digital tablets linked to the teacher’s platform. Voice-controlled devices also enable quick interaction without raising hands.
This design, combining high technology with flexible communication, eases students’ learning pressure and improves class efficiency. It also encourages active participation rather than passive listening. I sincerely hope my idea can be adopted.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【答案】When heading back, our car broke down unexpectedly. We got stuck on a remote rural road far from nearby towns, with no mobile signal to call for help. A sense of worry crept over us instantly. However, optimistic Bob cheered everyone up right away. He took out the remaining sweet oranges gifted by the garden owner and suggested an impromptu roadside picnic. While having fruit, we talked about funny experiences on the trip, including his jokes at the Tropic of Cancer and his playful warning to buzzards. His constant humor drove away our anxiety.
When the repairmen arrived, we’d turned the long wait into joy. They were greatly surprised to see us enjoying ourselves instead of feeling annoyed. After they finished repairing the car efficiently, they shared homemade local candies with us. The sudden breakdown turned into another precious surprise of our journey. Filled with warmth, we restarted our trip home, grateful for Bob’s positive outlook that turned every accident into wonderful memories.
