I spent my childhood bodysurfing with my grandmother on Long Island in New York and snorkeling (浮潜) around the coral reefs of the Florida Keys with my dad. I even got to try SNUBA diving — a form of surface-supplied diving that uses an underwater breathing system — at just 8 years old.
When it came time for college, I never considered anything other than a science major. I earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science from Virginia Tech. After graduating, I worked as a biological technician for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in North Carolina, assisting with a range of projects that included staring at photos to count the barnacles (藤壶) on dolphin fins, as well as checking up on dolphin stomachs to document their contents.
After working for a couple years, I attended graduate school to earn a master’s degree in marine biology from Florida Atlantic University. For my research, I worked with Denise Herzing, Ph. D., founder and research director of the Wild Dolphin Project. I spent my summers living at sea in the Bahamas, free-diving among dolphins to study their behavior, communication and ecology. Even with the temperamental (喜怒无常的) crew, seasickness during rough seas, and painful skin problems because of stings (蛰伤), it was a dream come true.
Getting used to human presence, those dolphins granted me access to the most intimate moments of their lives. I observed baby dolphins learn to swim and hunt, watched mothers nurse their young and glimpsed males’ fights for the attention of shy females. Watching their relationships and struggles due to human activity, I ultimately developed an interest in storytelling and conservation photography.
Now, I try to combine my scientific background, writing and artistic ability to help people emotionally connect to wild subjects and experience the wonders of nature. I hope my efforts in science communication increase ocean literacy, raise awareness of conservation issues, and inspire positive action toward the environment.
24. Why does the author mention his childhood in paragraph 1?
A. To show he had a wonderful childhood. B. To tell about his growing environment.
C. To show the ocean is in his blood. D. To recommend activities in the sea.
25. How did the author choose his major?
A. By following his heart. B. By taking his parents’ advice.
C. By comparing different majors. D. By consulting biological technicians.
6. Which of the following can best describe the author’s life in the Bahamas?
A. Busy but simple. B. Difficult and lonely.
C. Interesting and relaxing. D. Challenging but worthy.
27. What did the work with dolphins inspire the author to do?
A. Focus on writing stories about them.
B. Begin to enjoy the wonders of nature.
C. Change his work to art photography.
D. Encourage people to protect them through his efforts.

In some cities, as many as one in four office spaces are empty. Some start-ups are giving them a second life. Vertical (垂直的) indoor farms — where crops can be grown in climate-controlled environments using the latest planting techniques — have been popping up around the world.
The open-plan nature of most modern offices makes them suitable for indoor farm use. Still, repurposing, particularly to ensure a space can accommodate the proper equipment and has proper electrical, heating, ventilation (通风), and air conditioning systems, can be difficult.
The Calgary Tower Project, developed by the company Agriplay Ventures, has worked to overcome these challenges. Agriplay uses 1-by-2.5m modular racks (有标准组件的架子) rising up to 3m tall, which can easily adapt to any space with ventilation. The racks are also easy to remove once a project is completed.
Unoccupied office buildings are often close to final consumers. In a former paper storage warehouse in Arlington, about a mile outside of Washington, D. C., Area 2 Farms is growing over 180 organic varieties of green vegetables. By serving consumers within 10 miles or less, the company has driven down transport costs and any associated carbon footprint.
Energy use, however, is the “Achilles’ heel” of this field, says Fraser. Vertical farms need a lot of electricity to run lighting and ventilation systems, smart devices, and automated harvesting technologies. “But if energy is sourced from renewable sources, they can outperform regular farms in this regard, too,” he says. They face other challenges, too. And, for now, aside from leafy greens, most indoor facilities cannot yet mass produce other types of crops like wheat, corn or rice.
“One thing cities dislike is unused spaces that don’t drive economic growth,” says Fraser. “If indoor farm projects in cities like Arlington prove successful, others may follow suit.”
28. What can be learned about Agriplay?
A. It helps clients locate storage areas. B. It develops new planting techniques.
C. It focuses on maintaining office buildings. D. It offers equipment suited for indoor farming.
29. What does the author indicate by mentioning Arlington?
A. The achievements of Area 2 Farms. B. The benefits of urban indoor farms.
C. The significance of vertical farming. D. The popularity of organic vegetables.
30. Which word is closest in meaning to “Achilles’ heel” underlined in paragraph 5?
A. Core. B. Future. C. Weakness. D. Advantage.
31. What might be the best title for the text?
A. The Rise of Organic Farms B. A New Life for Empty Offices
C. A Bright Future for City Farmers D. The World of High-Tech Agriculture
D
Minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements are essential for wind generators, electric vehicles, cell phones and other technologies. With demand rising, some are now looking to tap the seafloor for its vast metal ores. This practice, called deep-sea mining, aims to retrieve (开采) mineral resources from the ocean floor, hundreds or thousands of meters below the surface.
While exploratory mining to test equipment has occurred at a small scale, deep-sea mining has not yet been undertaken commercially. Most deep-sea mining interest is concentrated in international waters. This means the industry’s future will largely depend on how the UN’s International Seabed Authority (ISA) decides to regulate it. Despite years of negotiations, the ISA and its membership have been unable to agree on rules that will govern commercial mining operations in international waters. Meanwhile, opinion remains deeply divided on whether deep-sea mining should be allowed at all.
Supporters argue that deep-sea mining could help meet growing mineral needs for clean energy and digital technologies, while avoiding deforestation and freshwater pollution linked to land-based mining. They also claim offshore extraction might reduce human rights abuses in supply chains.
The science so far paints a concerning picture, predicting direct harm to marine life from heavy equipment and clouds of stirred-up sediment, long-term disturbance of rare, slow-reproducing species and ecosystems, and potential species extinction due to habitat loss. Mining also carries social and governance risks through coastal development and unfair profit distribution, and the loss of biodiversity may damage the ocean’s carbon cycle, weakening its role in regulating global climate.
The need for critical minerals is undeniable. But there is no easy answer to meet this demand responsibly, given the immature state and potential dangers of mining at sea and the well-understood harms associated with mining on land. With so many unknowns, the question remains: Is deep-sea mining necessary — or too great a gamble?
32. What is the main reason why large-scale deep-sea mining has not started yet?
A. Lack of suitable technology. B. Concern about human rights abuses.
C. Rising cost of seafloor mineral extraction. D. Disagreement on international regulations.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning deep-sea mining?
A. Its possible advantages. B. Its environmental risks.
C. Its development history. D. Its potential market value.
34. Which of the following is NOT a direct harm caused by marine mining?
A. Damage to marine life. B. Unfair profit distribution.
C. Possible species extinction. D. Disturbance to rare marine species.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward deep-sea mining?
A. Slightly doubtful. B. Sharply disapproving.
C. Thoughtfully concerned. D. Enthusiastically supportive.

As is well known, making art is good for your health. It can reduce stress and improve your spirit. 36 All you need to do is just make art. And the more you do it, the better. Here’re some tips to help you kick-start your creative art habit.
37 In fact, there’re no differences in health outcomes between those who are identified as experienced in art and those who aren’t. So no matter your level, you could feel all the good things that come with making art.
Figure out your mode of creative expression. There’re many choices available: painting, cooking, baking, woodworking, sewing — the sky’s the limit. 38 Anything that sets off your creative mind is good for you. And don’t feel like you have to stick to one thing. Mix it up — do whatever you’re in the mood for.
Focus on the making and let go of expectations. Once you have your art materials, here comes the fun part. Let yourself get lost in the process and just play. It’s the physical act of making art that causes those feelings of stress relief and positive spirit, not what you make. 39
Think about making art like any healthy habit. Just as you make time to exercise and hang out with friends, you should make time for your artistic creation. You don’t even need a few hours. 40 In addition to carving out time, carve out a physical space for art. You could set up a corner table for your art supplies. If space is an issue, put them all in a container that’s easily accessible.
A. Keep an open mind.
B. Improve yourself with regular practice.
C. Don’t require yourself to have great skills.
D. However, developing interest in art takes little time.
E. Doing just 10 minutes of art each day can do wonders.
F. But you don’t have to be a full-time artist to get these benefits.
G. So, you don’t even need to finish what you’re making to feel those health benefits.

17-year-old Lila had been training for the mountain-climbing challenge for half a year, determined to prove that she was no longer the shy and weak girl she used to be. Her goal was to reach the top of a medium-difficulty mountain nearby, together with her best friend Mia and their coach Mr. Carter. Lila had always feared heights, but she believed that facing her fear head-on was the only way to grow. However, on the day of the climb, things took an unexpected turn.
Halfway up the mountain, a sudden rainstorm broke out, making the rocks wet and slippery. The wind howled, and visibility dropped sharply. Mia accidentally twisted her ankle and couldn’t move forward. Mr. Carter had to stay with Mia to take care of her, leaving Lila with two choices: turn back alone or continue climbing to find a safer spot to call for help. Lila felt a wave of panic — she was terrified of being alone on the mountain, and the harsh weather made the journey even tougher. She sat on a rock, tears mixing with rain, and wanted to give up.
Mr. Carter noticed Lila’s hesitation and shouted to her firmly: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to keep going when you are afraid. You have trained hard, and you are stronger than you think. We need you to be brave now — your courage will save us all.” Lila lifted her head, looked at Mr. Carter’s encouraging eyes and Mia’s worried face, and felt a strong determination rising in her heart. She wiped away her tears and decided to face the adversity bravely.

参考范文:
Our school hall witnessed a lecture focusing on environmental protection shared by an expert from our city’s Bureau of Environmental Protection yesterday afternoon.
Armed with his experience in environmental protection, he listed some examples reflecting how seriously our planet has been damaged. On top of that, he introduced some organizations that have made great contributions to our environment. At last, the expert gave some practical tips, such as how to save energy and how to protect the environment in our daily life.
When the lecture came to an end, we firmly believed that every small action counts and that everyone can make a difference.
第二节(满分25分)
参考范文:
Lila took a deep breath and started to move forward. She held tightly onto the rocks, carefully stepping on the less slippery spots. The rain kept pouring, and her hands were sore and cold, but she never stopped. Whenever she felt scared, she repeated Mr. Carter’s words in her mind, strengthening her determination. She also kept shouting to Mia and Mr. Carter to let them know she was safe, which gave them hope too. Her perseverance helped her get through the toughest parts, and she became more confident as she moved on, facing the adversity bravely.
After hours of tough climbing, Lila finally spotted a small shelter on the mountainside. She rushed over, exhausted but excited, and found a working phone inside. She immediately called for rescue, clearly explaining their position and situation. When the rescuers arrived and reached Mr. Carter and Mia, everyone was relieved. Mr. Carter patted Lila on the shoulder proudly, saying, “Your courage and perseverance saved us. You’ve grown into a brave and strong girl.” Lila smiled, realizing that overcoming adversity was the best way to grow, and she would never forget this valuable lesson.

第一节
听下面5段录音,每段录音后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段录音后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段录音播放两遍。
(Text 1)
M: I’ve just got a map of the race. Let’s have a quick look at it.
W: OK. Let’s see… The starting point is at the top, and the finishing line is in the middle. The first-aid tent is below that, and that’s where we’ll head next. Let’s walk over there.
(Text 2)
W: There are two areas to choose between. The hotel is near the station — it’s so convenient.
M: True, but it might be noisy, so I’d recommend the other option — the guesthouse near the river.
(Text 3)
W: Why do you keep checking your watch?
M: I need to watch the time, actually. There are no buses after four-thirty and I can’t get home later than quarter to five this afternoon.
(Text 4)
M: Sarah, the football game is about to start. Come on into the living room so we can watch it together. It’s going to be exciting!
W: This novel is so exciting that I can’t put it down, so I’ll skip the match this time.
(Text 5)
W: I really hope they’ll fix the leak soon. Water has been slowly pouring out all morning. Mrs. Patel, who lives on the same street, was also complaining about it.
M: It’s happening at my house too. I noticed it when I was leaving for work.

(Text 6)
W: Hello George. How was your trip?
M: Really good, thanks, Mum. The meetings went well, and I had a day to do some sightseeing and shopping before I flew back. This is for you!
W: Oh, what a lovely vase! I’ll fill it with beautiful flowers and put it on the dining table! Did you get it from a craft shop?
M: No, it came from the market, which is only open once a week. I was lucky that it happened to be on my day off!
听下面的录音,回答第8和第9小题。现在你有10秒钟的时间阅读这两个小题。
(Text 7)
M: I really want to try out this new exercise and diet program I read about in a magazine, Mum.
W: But how do you know it’s the right one for you?
M: Well, a couple of my friends are following it, so I think it’s safe.
W: A diet that works for your friends may not necessarily be good for you. Why don’t we take a look on the Internet first? That way we’ll find out if there are any potential dangers or anything you need to watch out for. Then Dr. Pearce can give you a check-up, just to make sure that all’s well.
M: OK, then.
听下面的录音,回答第10至第12小题。现在你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。
(Text 8)
W: You’re listening to “Helping Hand”. Joining us by phone today is Michael, a helicopter pilot who works with various search and rescue services. Michael, what do you do as a volunteer pilot?
M: Most of my volunteer work is during emergencies; for the rest of my time, I run a helicopter tour service. I take tourists up for helicopter rides over the area.
W: I see. So are you on call all the time?
M: No, there are eight volunteer pilots in the area, and we take turns being on call. I’m on call two days a week. And once a week, I participate in the safety or training sessions.
W: What qualities are important for a search and rescue worker?
M: You need to be ready to risk your life to save others and be able to handle challenges. Above all, you must have a deep sense of responsibility.

M: This morning, I’m talking to skateboarding champion, Katie Mellows. Katie, would you consider yourself naturally talented?
W: Not really. I was always the first at the park in the morning, and I wouldn’t leave till it was dark. I’d do the same trick over and over till it was perfect.
M: What do you like about skateboarding?
W: There’s nothing like the feeling of riding, just you and your board. I feel completely free when I’m doing it.
M: How do you prepare for major competitions?
W: A couple of days before the competition, I rest and prepare mentally. This gets me into the “zone”, ready to compete. I create a picture of the competition in my head, where I watch myself getting that medal.
M: When I watched your performance, what surprised me was how you rode your board compared to other skateboarders. Your skating looked particularly smooth.
W: Thanks. I train a lot on balance and rhythm, so maybe that is what makes the difference.

M: Welcome to my talk about being an architect. What made me choose this job? As a child, I loved to go to the museum where I saw photos of modern and ancient buildings. Then at high school, I attended a careers event, where I watched a wonderful documentary about an architect’s life — that’s what truly inspired me to become an architect. What’s great about being an architect is that I work in different places and even abroad too. Another thing is that I have all sorts of customers. That’s what I like best. And of course, it’s a well-paid job. Being an architect can be difficult. I have to work with numbers and know a lot about the laws and rules regarding architecture. Sometimes, I know a particular type of wood will look perfect, but it’s too expensive or not available, so I have to find something else that’s suitable, which worries me. What would I love to design next? Recently, I saw new floating homes — such a good idea in places where flooding is a problem. I also read about ideas to develop a town below the ground. But I’m wondering about building homes on the moon. It would be a challenge, but I’m very interested in it!
