空格位于动词put前作方式状语,修饰“put it on a chair”。

they指代Nancy夫妇,作主语;their(他们的,形容词性物主代词)、them(他们,宾格)均不能作主语。
比较级…the better… the+比较级…the better“越……

Yulin City in Shaanxi Province was once troubled by serious sandstorms. The Mu Us Desert took up large areas of land around the city. To fight against desertification (沙漠化), local residents (居民) have planted sea buckthorn (沙棘), a tough plant that can live in dry and sandy land. It plays an important role in holding sand and protecting the land.
Lots of young people have come back to their hometown to join the greening work, 26-year-old Li Wei is a typical example. He spent his childhood watching sandstorms destroy roads and farmlands. For a long time, he dreamed of working and living in big cities far away.
But everything changed after he finished college. Seeing the poor living conditions and the worsening environment, Li Wei made a new choice. He said, “Escaping cannot solve problems. I want to stay and do something for my hometown.” In 2019, he returned home without hesitation (犹豫).
Li Wei began to plant sea buckthorn in the desert right away. However, the work was arduous. The strong wind and lack of water made it hard for young plants to live. In the first year, he planted 400 young trees, but most of them dried up and died. He never gave up. He learned planting skills from elderly farmers and kept trying again and again.
Four years later, large areas of sea buckthorn have grown strongly. The sandy land is covered with green plants, and sandstorms become much fewer. Li Wei also posts short videos about tree planting online and calls on more people to protect the environment. Today, plenty of volunteers from different places come here to plant trees together.
31. Why do local people plant sea buckthorn?
A. It looks beautiful in the desert. B. It can help stop desertification.
C. It can grow well anywhere on Earth. D. It doesn’t need any water at all.
32. What does the underlined word “arduous” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Easy. B. Funny. C. Difficult. D. Popular.
33. Which is the correct order of the events?
① Li Wei learned skills from farmers and kept planting trees.
② Li Wei planted 400 young trees but most died.
③ Li Wei returned to his hometown after college.
④ More volunteers came to plant trees in Yulin.
A. ③②①④ B. ③①②④ C. ②③①④ D. ②①③④
34. What does Li Wei do to call on people to protect the environment?
A. He makes some posts online.
B. He tells the people about tree planting online.
C. He makes videos about tree planting online.
D. He calls on people online.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Buckthorn in Yulin City B. Desert Plant Buckthorn
C. Desertification in the Mu Us Desert D. Li Wei Plants Buckthorn
B 32. C 33. A 34. C 35. D
第一段“To fight against desertification (沙漠化), local residents (居民) have planted sea buckthorn (沙棘), a tough plant that can live in dry and sandy land. It plays an important role in holding sand and protecting the land.”,明确提到当地人种植沙棘是为了帮助阻止沙漠化。
第四段划线词后文提到“The strong wind and lack of water made it hard for young plants to live. In the first year, he planted 400 young trees, but most of them dried up and died. He never gave up.”,强风和缺水使得幼苗难以存活,大多数都干枯死了,但他不会放弃,说明这项工作是非常艰难困苦的。
根据文章脉络:第三段“In 2019, he returned home without hesitation (犹豫).”首先Li Wei大学毕业后回到家乡(③);第四段“In the first year, he planted 400 young trees, but most of them dried up and died.”接着第一年种了400棵树但大多死了(②);第四段“He learned planting skills from elderly farmers and kept trying again and again.”然后他向老农学习技能并坚持种植(①);最后一段“Today, plenty of volunteers from different places come here to plant trees together.”
最后一段提到“Li Wei also posts short videos about tree planting online and calls on more people to protect the environment.”,李伟通过在网上发布关于种树的短视频呼吁人们保护环境,对应C选项。
