Just Ask
I am Jakub, and you can call me Kuba. I am an English teacher living in Beijing. My field of study is family education. Tell me what’s on your mind and I’ll see how I can help you.
Dear Jakub,
My parents plan everything for me. They plan my schoolwork, my free time and even my holidays. I told them that I want to make my own plans, but they do not listen. What should I do?
Li Lingling, 14
Hi, Lingling,
Our parents always see us as their little children. They want to take care of us. But sometimes they forget that we are growing up and can start to make our own choices.
Maybe it is still too early for you to live or travel alone. But there are many small actions you can do to show your parents you are more independent.
For example, you can do chores like cleaning the bathroom after you take a shower, cooking a meal or washing clothes on the weekends. These small actions show that you don’t wait for your parents to do everything.
The same is true for hobbies. If you want to learn painting or sports, you can look for a school and offer to pay part of the cost. To do this, you can use your allowance (零花钱) you have saved up. This is a good way to show adults you are becoming more independent. And then maybe from time to time your parents can allow you to make your decisions.
Jakub
11. Why does Li Lingling ask Jakub for help?
A. Because she isn’t good at English. B. Because she doesn’t have good friends.
C. Because she wants to find a good job. D. Because she wants to make her own decisions.
12. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. Being a teacher is hard. B. Small actions can show you are ready.
C. Doing chores is helpful. D. Different hobbies can make you happy.
13. Where can you read the passage?
A. In a magazine. B. In a novel. C. In a travel guidebook. D. In a book report.

【11题详解】
原文中Li Lingling的信里提到 “My parents plan everything for me...I want to make my own plans, but they do not listen. What should I do?”她的困扰是父母包办所有事情,自己想做决定却不被父母认可,所以求助的原因是她希望能自己做决定,对应选项D。

China has completed its BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (北斗卫星导航系统), or BDS, becoming another one in the world with a global navigation network (导航网络), and the other three are GPS of the US, GLONASS of Russia and Galileo of the European Union.
As the name suggests, the global navigation system (全球导航系统) provides navigation and location services 24 hours a day. From what we have known so far, building a good satellite system costs a lot. Besides, the other systems have been set up. Why does China have a new one if there is nothing special?
The other three systems have 24 satellites (卫星). Besides the 24 satellites, China’s new BeiDou-3 (BDS-3) has six more satellites. They can improve BDS’ accuracy (精准性).
BDS has another strong point—the short message service. It allows users to have a two-way communication. In areas not covered by communication signals, BDS can make the short message service available in some uninhabited areas, such as deserts, forests, and mountains. With this service, users who are in danger can tell the rescue team (救援队) their location and condition.
In fact, BDS is also good business. It’s important for China to have its own navigation satellite system to meet the needs of the country’s development. BDS plays an important role in our country’s progress.
14. BDS is the ________ global navigation network in the world.
A. third B. fourth C. fifth D. sixth
15. What does the underlined word “uninhabited” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. It describes a high place. B. It describes a place with lots of animals.
C. It describes a crowded place. D. It describes a place where no people live.
16. What is TRUE about China’s BDS?
A. BDS can only be used in danger. B. BDS has only one way of communicating.
C. BeiDou-3 has 30 satellites in all. D. BDS was invented earlier than GLONASS.
17. What is the best title?
A. Do you know China’s BDS? B. Do you know who invented BDS?
C. How is China developing? D. Why should we develop science and technology?
【答案】14. B 15. D 16. C 17. A

Did you hear one side of a story about a person and judge (评价) the person right away? It’s so common that we’ve probably done that. If your friend just had an argument with someone and told you the person’s faults (错误), you might begin to develop a sense of hate against the person. But here’s the truth: every argument has more than one side that needs to be considered.
What’s the connection between having arguments and watching movies? When you only listen to one side of a story, it’s like watching a movie, but only some certain scenes. This way, you’ll miss many parts that can influence your understanding of the whole story. By learning both sides of a story, you can get a clearer picture of it and a better understanding of people’s relationships.
For example, your sister is now upset because she didn’t get the invitation to her friend’s birthday party. After listening to her side, you might think of her friend as unfriendly. But, what if her friend only invited her family to the party? Her friend didn’t want your sister to feel embarrassed at the party, so she didn’t invite her. Then you’ll understand how thoughtful (体贴的) her friend is. You no longer think of her friend as unfriendly but understanding.
Remember that there are two sides of a story. It’s certainly not wise to consider only one side of the story. Judging someone before hearing the whole story is dangerous. In doing so, you might miss the truth and make serious mistakes. Don’t make such mistakes and never judge others before walking in their shoes.
47. How do people feel if their friend tells them someone else’s faults in the passage?
_________________________________________________________________________
48. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
_________________________________________________________________________
49. Why does the writer give an example in Paragraph 3?
_________________________________________________________________________
50. What will happen if people judge someone before hearing the whole story in the passage?
_________________________________________________________________________
51. What can you learn from the passage?
_________________________________________________________________________
【答案】47. They might begin to develop a sense of hate against the person.
48. It’s about the connection between having arguments and watching movies.
49. To tell us we should learn both sides of a story.
50. They might miss the truth and make serious mistakes.
51. We should never judge others before walking in their shoes.

Jakub

A. Because she isn’t good at English. B. Because she doesn’t have good friends.

C
If you’ve ever cried during a movie, you might have been called too emotional (情绪化的). ____18____
Scientists aren’t sure exactly what happens when we cry, but they know it can help us feel better. A study found that 50 percent of participants (参与者) felt happier after crying. Also, when people see us cry, they are willing to help us.
Professor (教授) Ad Vingerhoets, an expert, says that crying makes others feel empathy (同感), so they want to support and be kind to us. “That is to say, tears (眼泪) connect, ” Professor Vingerhoets says. Research shows that people who cry are seen as warmer, nicer, more reliable (可靠的) and honest. ____19____
While some people might feel worse after crying or get a headache, many feel better. Another expert, Anna Mathur explains, “Crying is how our body lets out strong feelings. When we hold a lot of emotions, we can become like a pressure cooker (高压锅), until our body finds a way to let things go. ”
____20____ Or that crying after hitting your foot makes the pain go away faster? This is because of your body’s response (反应) to crying. “By letting tears go, you are welcoming happy hormones (荷尔蒙),” says Mathur. Some of them can even make pain feel less strong.
So, the next time you feel stressed about your exams or study, remember that it’s perfectly okay to cry. Sometimes letting those tears go can be the first step to feeling better, clearing your mind, and finding the strength to try again. ____21____
A. Have you noticed that after crying, you feel more relaxed?
B. We mustn’t cry when we lose or feel sad.
C. A little cry might just help you wash away the stress and welcome a fresh start.
D. They are people we like as friends, neighbors or partners.
E. But crying is normal, and it can actually be good for us.

____24____ What has the job of being a journalist (记者) brought you?
____25____ What do you do every day as a new media (媒体) journalist?
____26____ Is there any advice you’d like to give to those new journalists?
A. It helps me make many new friends. Also, it makes me see the necessity and power of international communication. In the past few years, we have seen a change in Chinese media. We went from telling stories from abroad to telling the world stories. I feel quite proud.
B. It was quite by accident. When I suggested recording the Two Sessions (两会) in the form of a vlog, everyone on the team was unsure about this idea. We finally decided to give it a try, and surprisingly, the vlog became popular online.
C. Well, they need to have great skills and knowledge, and react (做出反应) quickly to the latest news. Also, it’s important to care. Only when they actually care about the people and the topic they are covering, will they make the interviewees open up and touch the hearts of their audience (观众).
D. Many times! That’s why I think a good way of asking is important. Once I tried to interview a foreigner. I saw him refuse many journalists before me. I knew I must change. I said, “You look so cool! Are these traditional clothes from your country?” That got him to start talking to me.
E. My team and I need to discuss what to cover, who to interview and so on. Then I write a text. When filming, I need to reach out to different people. I do the editing (剪辑) part too. Making vlogs is much easier. I just think of what to ask, and go to talk to people with my phone.

五、阅读表达
阅读短文,根据短文内容简要回答问题。
