Tourism probably started in Roman times. Rich Romans visited friends and family who were working in another part of the Roman Empire (帝国). But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped.
In the early 17th century, the idea of the “Grand Tour” was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel. They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice in Italy. Their tours lasted for two to four years, and the tourists stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The “Grand Tour” was an important part of young people’s education—but only for the rich.
In the 18th century, tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to “take the waters”. They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns.
In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays by the sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier.
Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more to faraway countries. The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. Planes were made larger, so ticket prices dropped and more people used them.
Thus, tourism grew. In 1949, Russian journalist Vladimir Raitz started a company called Horizon Holidays. The company organizes everything—plane tickets, hotel rooms, even food—and tourists pay for it all before they leave home. The package tour and modern tourist industry were born and began to take off.

Passage 4
Skillfully turning the chicken steak in the hot pan, 48-year-old street seller Li Junyong, who has been nicknamed “chicken steak brother”, has become famous online quickly and turned into a must-visit 1 in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province.
His 2 selling styles and words, such as “You can refuse me, but not my chicken steak” and “You deserve everything beautiful in the world, including my chicken steak”, attracted many tourists. During the National Day holiday, visitors from across China queued for hours just to buy his 6-yuan chicken steak, saying the happy feelings they got were worth much more than the price.
The popularity of Li has helped the growth of tourism in Jingdezhen, a city known for its ceramic (陶瓷) products. This is similar to what happened before in Zibo, a city that became popular for its barbecue.
These examples show a change in how people travel. Young travelers, 3 Generation Z (Z世代,通常指出生于1995年—2010年的人群) now want more than just to see famous places. They look for warm cultural experiences and real connections, like joining local activities and learning traditional skills. “Chicken steak brother” offers exactly that.
4 , experts pointed out that city managers should make good use of, but not depend on the influence of famous people. While Li’s popularity is a great starting point, Jingdezhen’s true strength 5 in its thousand-year history of ceramic art. The city must use this attention to guide tourists toward its deeper cultural treasures, like pottery (陶器) workshops and museums. This way, the sudden excitement around one person can turn into a lasting interest in the city itself. The real secret to a city’s long-term attraction is the sincere 6 it makes with people.

Passage 5
Answer the questions. (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
A Backcountry Adventure
Sunday, July l0th
We are back from our three-day camping trip to the Shenandoah Valley. Mom and Dad had been worried about our family’s reliance on computers, cell phones, and video games for entertainment. So they decided a camping trip would help us overcome our dependence on electronic devices. I knew we’d have to be resilient (适应力强的) in order to find a way to survive without the comforts of home.
When you camp in the backcountry, you could only bring necessities that you needed to survive, such as food, clothes, a camp stove, fuel, rope, a map, and a water container. At first, I was surprised that we weren’t bringing bottled water with us. Then my heavy, overstuffed backpack made me realize we’d soon use up any supply we could carry. Instead, we’d have to boil water from nearby streams.
Our first day in the wild was out of expectation. We scrabbled up rocky paths and waded in an ice-cold stream. Colourful wildflowers waved at us. I felt like I had stepped into a dreamy painting. After all that exercise, an intense hunger burned in my stomach. Mom’s homemade snacks had never tasted so good.
At night, the darkness seemed like a black curtain. I tried to read with an electric torch, but I couldn’t concentrate. I finally fell asleep to a chorus of chirping crickets (蟋蟀鸣叫声中).
By our last day, I had blistered (长水泡的) feet and bug-bitten arms. I was ready to go home. I couldn’t wait to play computer games. But a funny thing happened. Soon after I started my favorite game, I lost the interest. So I walked outside to get some fresh air. Mom and Dad’s plan had worked after all. Right then I decided to spend more time outdoors.
1.The author spent three days camping with his parents, didn’t he?
2.Why did they start the camping trip?
3.What did they take with them on the trip?
4.How did the author feel about the scenery in the wild?
5.List two difficulties the author met with during the camping trip.
6.What does the author mean by saying “Mom and Dad’s plan had worked after all.”?

Passage 5
