Many Chinese learners find it hard to write and memorize Chinese characters. However, Lena, a 20-year-old American student, sees them in a special way. To her, each Chinese character tells its own story.
In Lena’s eyes, Chinese characters look like different objects. The character “ren” (meaning “person”) seems like a cat’s mouth, “ceng” (meaning “once”) looks like an angry robot, and the traditional form of “wu” (meaning “nothing”) reminds her of a sheep.
This March, Lena tried to draw Chinese characters for the first time and shared her creative drawings online. To her surprise, they spread quickly and received 40,000 likes overnight, sparking (引发) discussions about language, art, and cultural exchange.
Some say Lena seems to understand the beauty of Chinese characters even better than many Chinese people. “It’s because you all are used to seeing the characters,” she said, adding that the opposite is also true. For example, she learned from her Chinese friends that the popular Internet word “orz” looks like a person kneeling (跪下) and bowing, but in English, it carries no meaning.
Lena prepares to share more drawings online. Her story shows that language is more than just words—it’s about connection and seeing the world through someone else’s eyes. That’s also the spirit behind UN Chinese Language Day, celebrated on April 20.
“This day encourages people to examine (检查) their own language in new ways and discover its creativity and beauty,” said Lena. She also advises Chinese learners around the world to communicate more with Chinese people. “It’s not only fun but also a great cultural exchange.”
29. What does the character “ren” look like in Lena’s eyes?
A. B. C. D.
30. Why can Lena understand the beauty of Chinese characters well?
A. Because Chinese characters are new to her. B. Because she likes Chinese culture.
C. Because Chinese characters are similar to English words. D. Because she knows English words better.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of cultural exchange. B. A creative way to explain Chinese characters.
C. A fun story behind UN Chinese Language Day. D. A fun way to memorize Chinese characters.

How should I respond?
You are in the mall and see a lady trying to open the door with bags in both of her hands. You help her open the door. “Thank you!” she says warmly. How would you respond?
The standard response is “You’re welcome”. This is what you learned in your textbook. While the textbook is correct, you may get caught out in conversation on the street. That’s because spoken English is quite casual, meaning it is informal. “You’re welcome” is formal, so you’ll hear the shopping assistant respond with this – and hopefully with a smile, too! Another formal response is “my pleasure”, which is getting outdated, and seldom said.
Common British replies include “No problem”. This is casual and said among friends. It’s also common when you’ve helped someone with a favor, for example helping someone to move a heavy box. It means it wasn’t difficult to give a helping hand. “It’s OK” is also another popular response.
While if you’re speaking with an Australian friend, impress them by responding with “no worries”. Americans like using “Sure” or “It’s fine” to respond.
However, there is no wrong way to respond. So try these phrases and find the response that suits your own style.
37. What is the standard response to “Thank you”?
A. You’re welcome. B. No problem. C. It’s OK. D. Sure.
38. What does the underlined sentence mean in paragraph 2?
A. The textbook is sometimes different from daily talk.
B. Don’t believe what the textbook tells you.
C. The English textbook in China isn’t correct.
D. The conversation on the street often annoys people.
39. According to the article, in the UK, if your friend said “Thank you”, you’d probably respond with ________.
A. You’re welcome B. My pleasure C. No problem D. Sure
40. Which of the following would an Australian commonly respond with to “Thank you”?
A. No worries. B. It’s OK. C. It’s fine. D. You’re welcome.
41. The words you choose to respond “Thank you” depend on your ________.
A. age B. gender(性别) C. style D. friends
第二节 阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
In the small town of Chinchilla in Australia, people celebrate one of the world’s most interesting festivals—Chinchilla Melon Festival (金吉拉西瓜节).
If you are strong and run fast, you can take part in the melon race competition. You must carry a big watermelon when you run. There are, of course, many other funny competitions, such as opening as many watermelons as possible in 60 seconds with your own watermelon! If you feel tired after competing in these games, you can have a rest under a big tree and enjoy watermelons. They are free!
Why do people hold the festival in Chinchilla? Well, Chinchilla grows about 25 percent of the watermelons in Australia each year. The first melon festival was held there in 1994. The festival was held to bring in visitors and cheer up people in Chinchilla. These people were having a hard time because of the drought (干旱). About 2,500 visitors went to the town, and it really made the people there happy.
Chinchilla held another melon festival in 1995 after the success of the first one. Since then, people have celebrated the festival every two years in February.
Today, the festival has different kinds of watermelon-themed games. Thousands of visitors come to the small town to join in these games. Have you tried melon skiing (西瓜滑行)? In the game, people need to put their feet into watermelons and ski down a hill. These interesting activities make the festival very popular with visitors.

At 6 p.m., they reached the forest直接复现地点forest“森林”;river“河流”、mountain“大山”、park“公园”无上下文支撑,逻辑不通。

11. be 12. for

15. less 16. but
17. difficult
18. took 19. me
20. more 21. and

23. happier
24. studies
25. proud
【解析】
【导语】本文讲述李文因父母外出打工而变得孤僻,后在父母和老师的帮助下重新找回自信的故事。
【11题详解】
句意:他过去是一个好学生,但当他的父母搬到城里找工作时,情况就变了。“used to do sth.”是动词短语,意为“过去常常做某事”,后接动词原形,故用原形be。
【12题详解】

B. No problem. C. It’s OK. D. Sure.

39. According to the article, in the UK, if your friend said “Thank you”, you’d probably respond with ________.
