During school days, my life feels like a train that never stops. I rush to class, rush through homework, rush to bed — only to repeat it all the next day. By the time I finally sit down, the day is already over. It seems like everything is “stealing” my time: homework, chores, classes, tests…
So, on the first day of the winter vacation, I made a promise to myself: This time, I’m taking my time back. I stayed up late every night to make up for all the free time I’d missed during the term.
At first, it felt amazing. I climbed into bed, lay down, and unlocked my phone. The screen lit up my face like a tiny light. I played games, watched TV shows one after another, and checked social media until my eyes felt heavy. This is freedom, I thought. Why did grown-ups always say they didn’t have enough time? They just don’t know the magic of staying up late.
But soon, I realized I wasn’t beating a “time thief” — I was feeding one. Even though I slept until noon, I woke up feeling tired. I couldn’t focus on my favourite comic books, and even the funniest videos didn’t make me laugh. I had “free time,” but I didn’t have the energy to enjoy it. This thief didn’t just take away my sleep — it stole my fresh mornings, my happiness, and my ability to stay focused.
So this semester, I will make a change. No more feeling sorry for wanting my own time. But real free time doesn’t steal my sleep, energy, or joy. I will manage my time wisely and try to keep a balance between school and life. After all, when I take care of my time, my time takes care of me — and that’s how I truly win my life back.
4. What is “stealing” the writer’s time during school days?
A. Checking social media. B. Staying up late every night.
C. Playing games and watching shows. D. Homework, chores, classes and tests.
5. Which is the right order of the following?
① The writer decided to manage time wisely.
② The writer had an amazing feeling of freedom.
③ The writer felt tired, lost happiness, and couldn’t focus.
④ The writer stayed up late every night to take back free time.
A. ④-③-②-① B. ④-②-③-①
C. ③-④-①-② D. ③-④-②-①
6. What did the writer realize according to Paragraph 4?
A. He needed more time to feel free.
B. The time thief is actually his best friend.
C. Free time without energy is meaningless.
D. He can beat the time thief by sleeping less.
7. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To show that school days are too busy for any free time.
B. To encourage readers to stay up late to have more free time.
C. To describe how fun it is to play games and watch shows at night.
D. To share the writer’s experience of learning to manage time wisely.

①Writing for children is often seen as easier than writing for adults. But the best children’s authors and illustrators (插图画家) know that’s not true. Michael Rosen and Cai Gao are winners of the 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Award. They have spent their lives creating books for young readers. Their work shows that children’s literature can be just as deep and meaningful as any other kind of literature.
②Rosen’s writing not only makes children laugh but also teaches them about life. Chocolate Cake, for example, tells the funny story of a boy who walks downstairs secretly at night to eat chocolate cake. It explores everyday life from a child’s point of view. Rosen also writes about the hard parts of life—but with great care. In Michael Rosen’s Sad Book, he speaks openly about the death of his son. He teaches children that being honest about their feelings is brave, not weak.
③Like Rosen’s writing, Cai Gao’s illustrations both please the eye and feed the mind. Her picture book The Peach Blossom Spring invites children into a beautiful land painted in warm, gentle colours. The book is based on Tao Yuanming’s famous story. It follows a fisherman who discovers a hidden village far from the troubles of the outside world. But unlike Tao, Cai doesn’t see this place as a dream we cannot reach. Instead, she paints it as something we can build. Through her beautiful pictures, she encourages children to create beauty and peace in their own lives.
④Children’s literature may be created for young readers, but its power is anything but small. Rosen and Cai remind us that the greatest truths often come in the simplest form.
8. According to Paragraph 1, what can we learn about children’s books?
A. They are as meaningful as books for adults.
B. They are easier to write than books for adults.
C. They are more interesting than books for adults.
D. They are deeper in meaning than books for adults.
9. What do we know about Rosen and Cai?
① They write stories from an adult’s point of view.
② They create works that are both fun and meaningful.
③ They are winners of the 2026 Hans Christian Andersen Award.
④ They think that difficult ideas can’t be used in children’s books.
A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①③ D. ②④
10. What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The Power of Children’s Literature
B. The Great Writings of Children’s Authors
C. The Way to Write Funny Stories for Children
D. The History of the Hans Christian Andersen Award

What’s Inside a Disaster Emergency Kit?
As the planet warms, natural disasters have become more common. You are much more likely to experience them than you were in 1960. But preparation can make a difference. Nicole Errett shares how she prepares for disasters.
Q: What does it mean to be prepared for emergencies?
A: Being prepared means realizing what’s happening around you. For example, whenever I go to coastal areas, I make sure I know where the tsunami area is and how to get to safety. But it’s not enough. Getting essentials ready matters a lot, too. And there are two parts to it: keeping essentials easy to reach and keeping them fresh. For example, I always have bottled water in my car and in my house. That way, if an emergency does happen, I don’t need to rush to the supermarket. I also replace it once a year because bottled water expires (到期).
Q: Do you have an emergency kit? What things do you include?
A: Yes. I pack a few basic things. I keep enough water and cookies or dried food. I also have a small first-aid kit. Other useful items include a rope and matches. Everything goes in a small bag that I can pick up quickly.
Of course, this is just a list to begin with. It is different for different people, depending on where you live. People in cold places might want to add a sleeping bag to their lists in winter, just in case the power goes out. The best place to get started is to think about what disasters might happen in the place you live and then prepare accordingly.
Q: Why is it a good idea to plan ahead?
A: It is much better to think through what you would do in an emergency when you are calm. As people often say in disaster planning, “It’s not the plan; it’s the planning.”
12. Why are natural disasters now more likely to happen according to Paragraph 1?
A. The planet is getting warmer. B. Coastal areas are more crowded.
C. People don’t realize the risks. D. Emergency essentials are not fresh.
13. What does the underlined word “essentials” most probably mean?
A. The plans you make. B. The medicine you take.
C. The things you need. D. The money you prepare.
14. What can be inferred from the text about disaster preparation?
A. It only needs water and food.
B. It should be the same for everyone.
C. It is unnecessary if you live away from coasts.
D. It depends on where you live and what risks you face.
15. What does Nicole mean by saying “It’s not the plan; it’s the planning”?
A. Planning is a waste of time.
B. The most important thing is to stay calm.
C. Making a plan is more important than preparing things.
D. Thinking ahead is better than making a plan in disaster.

A. ①② B. ②③ C. ①③ D. ②④

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. D

蒂娜哭诉完难处,作者当下马上就跟着焦虑,right away表示“立刻、马上”;long ago“很久以前”、just now“刚才”、once in a while“偶尔”,逻辑均不通。
面对再次难过的蒂娜,作者调整心态好好安慰她,take a deep breath“深吸一口气”,贴合平复情绪安慰朋友的场景;asked for help“求助”、made a mistake“犯错”、went on an outing“外出游玩”均不符语境。
后文“instead of telling them to accept the way we’ve drawn for them”对应“find their own way”找到自己的出路方法;answer“答案”、success“成功”、decision“决定”搭配不成立。
