Dorothy was walking along the yellow road when she saw a scarecrow (稻草人) standing in a field. His old hat was pushed to one side, and his painted face looked strangely friendly. When Dorothy came closer, one of his eyes seemed to wink (眨).
“Did you speak?” Dorothy asked in surprise.
“No,” said the scarecrow, “but I would like to.”
Dorothy helped him down from the pole (杆子). The scarecrow moved his arms and legs happily, as if he had just discovered the world. Then he told Dorothy his great trouble: his head was full of straw, so he believed he had no brain.
“I want to go to the Emerald City,” Dorothy said. “The Wizard may help me get home.”
“Then I will go with you,” said the scarecrow, “Perhaps he can give me a brain.”
As they walked, Dorothy noticed something odd. The scarecrow said he was foolish, but he asked thoughtful questions. When the road became full of holes and rocks, he thought of a safer way across. When Dorothy felt worried, he spoke gently and helped her keep going.
“You seem to think quite well,” Dorothy said.
The scarecrow shook his head. “That cannot be true. If I had a brain, I would know it.”
Dorothy did not argue. She only smiled and walked beside him.
The reader may smile too, because the scarecrow’s problem is not that he cannot think. It is that he cannot recognize his own thinking. Sometimes people search far away for something that has already begun to grow inside them.
4. Which is the correct order of the story?
a. b. c. d.
A. d-a-c-b B. b-a-c-d C. d-c-b-a D. d-b-a-c
5. What does the underlined word “odd” most probably mean?
A. Noisy. B. Scary. C. Strange. D. Expensive.
6. Which of the following shows the scarecrow could think well?
①He asked thoughtful questions.
②He could wink one of his eyes.
③He helped Dorothy keep going.
④He moved his arms and legs.
⑤He thought of a safer way across.
A. ①③④ B. ①③⑤ C. ①④⑤ D. ①②④
7. What does the passage mainly try to tell us?
A. We can always trust what others say.
B. We should not judge a person by his appearance.
C. We may have the quality that we don’t notice.
D. Traveling together is better than traveling alone.
D 5. C 6. B 7. C
根据第七段中“The scarecrow said he was foolish, but he asked thoughtful questions.”
根据第七段描述:①“他问了一些深思熟虑的问题”(he asked thoughtful questions);③“他帮助Dorothy继续前进”(helped her keep going);⑤“他想出了一条更安全的路线”(he thought of a safer way across)均体现了稻草人具备良好的思考能力。
根据最后一段“The scarecrow’s problem is not that he cannot think. It is that he cannot recognize his own thinking. Sometimes people search far away for something that has already begun to grow inside them.”

PERTH, Australia, April 12—Serious wildfires hit the forest areas of western Australia last week, caused by high temperature and strong dry winds. The local fire department (部门) reported that the wildfires spread fast in a short time, burning more than 50 square kilometers of forest and grassland. It has become the worst forest fire here in the past eight years.
Luckily, no deaths have been reported so far, but many people living near the forest have been moved to safe places. Many wild animals lost their homes, and a large number of plants were burned down, causing great harm to the local ecological (生态的) environment. Thick smoke from the fire also polluted the air in the nearby cities, leading to poor air quality. For this reason, people were reminded to wear masks when going out.
Over the past few days, hundreds of firefighters and volunteer teams have worked hard to fight the fires. With the help of fire trucks and firefighting helicopters (直升飞机), the rapid spread of the wildfires has been largely controlled and no larger fire risks remain.
Local government has taken quick action to prevent (阻止) further dangers. First of all, all mountain forest parks have been fully closed. Also, all outdoor burning activities are not allowed in the area. Moreover, the government has sent special teams to search for possible fire risks and asked other departments to repair the forest to protect local wildlife at the same time.
8. What caused the wildfires?
A. Outdoor burning activities. B. Hot weather and dry winds.
C. Lightning in stormy weather. D. Poor management of local areas.
9. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. The area’s ecosystem was seriously harmed.
B. Some people lost their lives in the wildfires.
C. Local people didn’t have to leave their homes.
D. People are reminded to wear masks to keep warm.
10. How many measures has the government taken to prevent further dangers?
A. Five. B. Four. C. Three. D. Two.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Firefighters Saved the Day B. How to Stop Forest Fires
C. Wildfires Hit Western Australia D. Wildfires Harm Environment
B 9. A 10. B 11. C

第二段“...causing great harm to the local ecological environment.”,点明当地生态系统受到了严重破坏。

关闭所有山林公园(all mountain forest parks have been fully closed);2.禁止户外燃烧活动(all outdoor burning activities are not allowed);3.派特别小组搜寻火险隐患(sent special teams to search for possible fire risks);4.要求其他部门修复森林保护野生动物(asked other departments to repair the forest)。

Some people often get sick just when their holiday starts. This is called “leisure sickness (休闲病) ”. It may happen when your busy body finally relaxes. You might have heard about it, but are there any real facts behind it?
Leisure sickness first appeared in a 2002 study by Dutch researchers. It describes people who are healthy during weekdays but often get sick on weekends or holidays. Researchers surveyed 1,893 people and found about 3% had symptoms (症状) like headaches, tiredness, colds and muscle pain. These symptoms usually appeared during the first week of their holiday. However, this research depended on people’s memory, and the idea of leisure sickness was not clear.
A 2014 study looked into why people get holiday headaches. The study asked 22 people to keep diaries of their daily stress and headache times. Scientists found that headaches often came the day after stress went down. For example, if someone relaxed on Monday, they might get a headache on Tuesday. That is why stressed workers often have headaches on weekends.
Although we don’t fully understand its causes, holiday travel might be one reason. Planes and airports are full of germs, and their bodies may not get used to the germs in a new place, so it’s easier to catch something there. Another reason is that busy work keeps us from noticing body problems. Once you relax, pains or headaches become more noticeable.
There is still much we do not understand about leisure sickness. But staying active, getting enough sleep, and eating healthy, balanced food—even when you are busy—can help you avoid it.
12. Why did the writer use the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?
A. To show the writer’s doubt. B. To explain what leisure sickness is.
C. To introduce the following studies. D. To give an example of a common symptom.
13. Which of the following is true about the 2014 study?
A. It surveyed 1,893 people to look into the problem.
B. It was about how people spent their holidays.
C. It found headaches only happened on weekends.
D. It was based on people’s diaries about their problems.
14. Who is probably suffering from leisure sickness?
A. Linda feels tired at work because of too many tasks.
B. Gina has a cold when the weather changes suddenly.
C. Tim gets muscle pain after exercising for a long time.
D. Helen gets sick as she suddenly relaxes after long work.
15. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Healthy habits can help avoid the problem.
B. We know the causes of the sickness clearly.
C. Busy work keeps people away from sickness.
D. Only busy people suffer from leisure sickness.
C 13. D 14. D 15. A
第一段划线句“You might have heard about it, but are there any real facts behind it?”
根据第三段“A 2014 study…The study asked 22 people to keep diaries of their daily stress and headache times.”
根据最后一段“But staying active, getting enough sleep, and eating healthy, balanced food…can help you avoid it.”
