One day a coconut trader (商人) was on a farm, picking some coconuts. He came on his cart (运货马车) and brought a big basket to put them in. There were so many nice coconuts on the trees. A hurricane (飓风) is a huge storm that starts over warm sea water. Hurricanes have winds that move in a circle. Hurricane winds are very powerful, and can move at speeds from 120 km/h to over 300 km/h.
The centre of hurricane winds is its eye. Winds in the eye are not very strong. Around the eye is an area called the eye wall. Winds blow hard and it rains a lot here.
Strong winds and heavy rain can do a lot of damage (破坏) when a hurricane moves over ground. Hurricane winds can be strong enough to break windows into pieces. The winds can even make tall trees fall down, and they might fall on houses or cars. Strong winds can pick up things and send them into the air, causing damage.
Heavy rain from a hurricane can cause floods (洪水) in areas that are not close to the sea. There can be a lot of floodwater and it rises fast. It sometimes reaches up to the top of houses. Water goes into the houses quickly and does a lot of damage. Wooden structures (木结构) might not be safe after a flood.
Although there is no way to stop a hurricane, you can prepare for it. Stay indoors, keep enough food and water at home, and listen to the news all the time to stay safe.
