When I was little, I was shy. I was afraid to speak up in class or make new friends. My heart would beat fast whenever someone asked me a question, and my face would turn red like a tomato. I spent most of my spare time playing video games and watching cartoons. I was comfortable in my little world, but I knew something was missing.
One day, I met a new friend, Sarah. Sarah was different from me. She loved trying new activities and meeting new people. She encouraged me to step out of my world. We went riding, climbed trees, and tried painting together. I was scared, but Sarah taught me that it was OK to make mistakes and that failure was a stepping stone to success.
Slowly but surely, I started to change. I began to raise my hand and share my thoughts in class. It was great to be heard and valued by my classmates and teachers. I even joined school clubs and took part in talent shows.
Now, I’m different. I’m shy sometimes, but I have learned to be confident. I have discovered that being myself is the best way to make true friends. Thanks to Sarah, I see the world as a place full of possibilities. I’m not afraid of trying new things because they help me grow. I’m thankful for what I’ve become—someone brave, confident, and ready to explore the world, one step at a time.

The Chinese ancient tea ceremony (仪式) is a practice of preparing, serving, and enjoying tea. It might start in the Tang Dynasty or even earlier and it reached the greatest time in the Song Dynasty. The traditional Chinese tea ceremony is usually held in important situations to welcome guests.
Main steps:
* Prepare a tea set. To hold a Chinese tea ceremony, a full tea set is needed, including a teapot, a serving bowl, cups, plates, etc.
* Heat the tea set. This step can help tea fully give off a nice smell.
* Put tea leaves into the teapot. Use the teaspoon, not the hand, to place some tea leaves into the teapot.
* Wash tea leaves. Pour the hot water into the teapot and keep it for a few seconds, and then pour out water quickly.
* Brew tea. Refill the teapot with hot water of a proper temperature, cover it and wait for a few minutes to keep the pleasant smell of the tea soup.
Manners and rules:
If you are the host, please:
* Serve the tea with both of your hands.
* Introduce the tea to your guests before serving.
* Do not fill the teacup fully, leave about 30% empty. This is not only to prevent the hot tea from burning the guests’ fingers, but also to show respect.
* Keep an eye on the teacups of your guests and fill them in time.
If you are the guest, please:
* Dress properly to attend the tea ceremony.
* Receive the teacup with both hands when being served with tea.
* Take a small mouthful of tea soup every time instead of drinking it up at a time.
* Show your admiration and thanks to the host when smelling or drinking the tea soup.
8. When did the Chinese ancient tea ceremony reach the greatest time?
A. In the Tang Dynasty. B. Before the Tang Dynasty.
C. In the Song Dynasty. D. In modern times.
9. What should you do before putting tea leaves into the teapot?
A. Clean tea leaves. B. Dry tea leaves.
C. Cool the tea set. D. Heat the tea set.
10. Why should you NOT fill the teacup fully when serving tea?
A. Because the tea set is too small.
B. Because the hot tea might hurt the guest.
C. Because the guest may not like too much tea.
D. Because filling the teacup fully is a waste of tea leaves.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period, the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of the Song and Yuan dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
However, it’s a pity that this folk art has been dying out recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters. For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the mental support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered, cherished and passed on.
12. Which has the closest meaning to the underlined word “precious”?
A. National and worthless. B. Useful and cheap. C. Valuable and expensive. D. Simple but priceless.
13. When did sugar painting appear?
A. In the Warring States Period. B. In the Tang Dynasty.
C. In the Yuan Dynasty. D. In the Ming Dynasty.
14. Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly?
A. To show their excellent skills.
B. To avoid syrup becoming hard.
C. To reduce people’s wasting time.
D. To protect the spoon and the table.
15. What can be the best title for the article?
A. Exploring the art of sugar painting
B. Improving the taste of sugar painting
C. Effects of the sugar producing technology
D. Ways to change the future of sugar painting

11. Which part of a magazine is the text most probably from?
A. Sports news. B. Healthy lifestyle. C. Modern science. D. Traditional culture.
(D)

On April 19, 2025, the world’s first half-marathon for humanoid (人形的) robots was held in Beijing. The robots waited beside human runners, starting from the same line.

During the 21-kilometer-long race, the robots had to run on two legs. Some even wore running shoes. Each robot was supported by a team of human guides, operators (操作员) and engineers. They could have their batteries changed during the race. Teams could even use new robots when the old ones could no longer run.
There were 20 teams in the race and six of them made it to the end. Tiangong Ultra won the first in two hours and 40 minutes. “It crossed the finish line about 30 minutes earlier than expected,” said Xiong Youjun, CEO of a robot center. “In general, all the robots today could deal with challenges such as turns and speed.
