Have you ever watched tinkering videos?Imagine a middle-aged man taking apart
an old music player in his small workroom, and then,"just for fun",putting it back
together.Such a video is simply shot with a smartphone, and for half its duration,it
focuses only on repairing a small hook spring(钩簧),
I've met tinkering-type people before at antiques fairs who are friendly enough but
I am not one of them.Instead,I welcome technology.I prefer contactless payment to
cash and streaming music to collecting CDs.The other day, however, glued to such
repair videos for a few hours,I found myself becoming increasingly drawn in.
My absorption may be partly due to what could be described as the "Bake off
effect":the strong pull of observing a process unfolding steadily from start to finish.
Before I knew it,an entire afternoon had slipped away as I did nothing but observe
elderly enthusiasts repairing old items.
This led me to reflect on the old objects around my home and realize that I am far
less attached to modernity than I claim. For instance,my streaming music is played
through two aging devices:an old-fashioned CD machine which was my wedding gift,
and a wood-carved 1940s radio picked up at a charity shop.Neither item bears any sign
of the 21st century.I still use them for they carry far more charm than a cold smart
speaker.I also keep a large collection of physical books despite my e-reader.I have
even had a full-height bookshelf built in my living room, stretching from floor to ceiling.
They are kept for they're prettier than a blank wall and nicer to touch than a Kindle.
I grew up in a 400-year-old house full of wooden structures and worn-out
floorboards where older-looking designs are quite comforting. Now I tend to repair old
objects before giving them away, honestly feeling an uplift in my wellbeing.I guess the
tinkerers still have much to teach me.
4.What drew the author to tinkering videos?
A.The desire to master repair skills

Microplastics, plastic pieces smaller than 5 millimeters, have become one of the
most concerning consumer pollutants due to their lasting presence in water sources.Yet
traditional water treatment systems often fail to capture the tiniest pieces. Now a
Chinese team of researchers, led by Deng Hongbing from Wuhan University, has
developed a new foam to address just that.
To make the foam, the team turned to nature and employed crayfish(谈水小龙虾)
shells, which are produced in large volumes every year and mostly thrown away
Through acid and alkali treatment of the shells, they extracted chitin-a natural fiber
with remarkable trapping capabilities."The chitin-based foam has a structure with a
large number of multi-level holes,similar to a net,"explained Deng."It can attract and
interact with diverse microplastics commonly found in electronics, food packaging,
textiles and other industrial products."
To see whether the foam would work in water found in a natural setting,
researchers tested it using samples from four real-world water sources-irrigation
water, lake water, seawater and pond water. Results showed that in each sample it
absorbed microplastics with an efficiency of up to 99.8 percent in its first use,and the
removal rates were over 95 percent after five cycles.
Unlike those of the conventional approaches, the physical properties of the foam
force microplastics to attach more tightly to its structure, reducing the risk of secondary
pollution. Also, the material itself is unlikely to be a source of secondary pollution
during breakdown.Importantly, its performance remains unaffected by heavy metals
and microorganisms in water.
The team has already applied for a patent for this biomass material technology,
hoping to bring it into water treatment plants or home water purifiers in the near future.
"Microplastics entering water habitats will continuously increase for thousands of
years,.”said Deng,“The root cause lies in non-degradable(不可降解的)petrol-based
plastic use."Given the structural flexibility of the chitin-based material, the team is
looking to develop a new type of bioplastic with excellent environmental friendliness.
8.What makes crayfish shells a good choice for microplastic removal?
A.The key substance they contain
B.Their great agricultural value.
C.The acid treatment they undergo.
D.Their special natural structure.
高二英语学业水平调研第3页(共8页)
9.Why did the researchers test the foam for five cycles?
A.To collect data to improve its effectiveness.
B.To evaluate its reusability over multiple uses.
C.To compare its performance in different waters.
D.To prove it works better with each repeated use.
10.How does the new foam differ from conventional materials?
A.It breaks down more efficiently after use.
B.It works on heavy metals and microorganisms.
C.It better prevents the re-release of micro plastics.
D.It reduces the harmful chemicals in micro plastics.
11.What is the focus of the last paragraph?
A.Potential market for the technology.
B.Promising direction for future study.
C.Physical advantages of the new material.
D.Possible adjustment to the research method.

We often hurry through life fuelled by busyness, secretly longing for rest. But
when the opportunity finally arises, it feels uncomfortable.
So why do we dislike doing nothing? “It's not even a dislike; it probably doesn't
even occur to many people, ”says Gabrielle Treanor, author of The 1%Wellness
Experiment.“We're connected to everything all the time, ”she says. Social media, for
example, is constantly flooding us with ideas for new things to do. “It's easy to feel that
life offers endless possibilities.”
il
There'sanother factor: guilt — particularly about appearing lazy. Increasingly,
being busy carries a sense of status and moral superiority. “Many of us grew up with the
awareness of the extra things we feel we ought to be doing, ”says Treanor. We're trying
to live up to the standard of a great parent or child, a great colleague or friend. All that
combined is pretty weighty, making it unlikely to be OK with doing not that much.
Of course, one person's ide a of doing nothing is another's concept of a busy
afternoon. A team of British psychologists did a research revealing that boredom is far
from being a bad thing. A group of participants were given the task of copying numbers
from a telephone directory. At the end, they were asked to come up with as many uses
as possible for a paper cup. They outperformed the control group. Then a second group
was given a much duller task, to simply read the numbers aloud, and they did even
better at creative brainstorming.
“When we are bored, our brains automatically search for stimulation, ” says Alfred
Mann, the lead researcher.“So when we can't meet that stimulation externally, our
brains will kind of search internally.”That's why we start mind-wandering. When we're
fully occupied, our inner judge is ruling the show. As Mann puts it:“If you're
daydreaming, you haven't got that voice in your head saying, ‘Don't be silly. That'sa
rid icl ous ide a!”Instead, your mind is free to roam outside the box.”
12.How does the author introduce the topic?
A.By quoting an expert's view.
B.By telling an interesting story.
C.By presenting a phenomenon.
D.By referring to a popular study.

A.They feel too guilty to have fun.

Photography has opened our eyes to a wealth of beauties we could never have
noticed,things as ordinary as a fence,a chair,a vegetable.16 And as
technology develops, photographers have explored completely new ranges:those of the
eagle,the microscope,the universe.
17 Photography depends on the integration of light, composition and
moment.Light makes the recording of an image possible, but in the right hands,it can
make the image shine.18 What the photographer chooses to keep in or out of
the frame is all that we will see-but that combination is vital. And the moment that
the shutter (is pressed, when an instant is frozen in time, provides the whole
image with meaning. When the three are in balance, there is visual magic.
Photographs bring us a world view unknown prior to the invention of the camera.
Images used to be made to please, not to record reality. But as photography progressed,
painterly rules were often rejected in the pursuit of fresh vision.19 They
invited the world to see with new eyes, and all of the arts began to draw new
inspirations from this change.
In this sense, photographers are not only scientists longing to "fix"an image but
artistic pioneers.Photographs have created a new way of seeing, changed our ideas of
beauty and, most importantly, made art more accessible. They have given us visual
proof that the world is grander than we imagined.20
A.The same is true with composition.
B.Why did photography change people's vision?
C.What is it that determines a photograph is beautiful?
D.And there is beauty,often ignored,in nearly everything.
E.Photography helps people discover various hidden secrets.
F.Photographers became interested in the real world, good and bad.
G.Such items, once not worth an artist's paint, are honored by photography.

Dear Steve
Hope you're doing well!I'm writing to tell you about the career experience activity our
school organized last Saturday, which left me with precious insights.
I signed up for the bookstore assistant position. Before the activity,I imagined it would be
an easy job just arranging books neatly, yet I soon realized how demanding it actually was.
My daily tasks included sorting books by categories.recommending suitable reading
materials to students of different ages, and patiently answering readers'various questions.I
chatted with countless book lovers throughout the day.gradually learning how to
communicate politely and listen attentively to others'needs.
Exhausted as I was after a full day's work, this experience brought me unexpected gains.I
came to understand that every occupation calls for devotion.patience and a strong sense of
responsibility.More importantly.I discovered my genuine passion for reading and sharing
literary charm with others.
Have you ever joined any career-themed activities at your school?I'm curious about your
experience and looking forward to your reply
Yours.
