In 2006 as a 10-year-old living in one of Delhi's busiest markets,I would oftenrun downstairs to buy
milk, eggs or vegetables for my mother. The shopkeepers knew me by face and often guessed my order
before I even spoke. These small market runs taught me more than I realised at the time-quick mental
maths, conversations with strangers, and backup plans when a shop was shut.So much unintentional
learning!
Over time, these routines became daily comfort.Whether it was me or my mother,we enjoyed the
smiles, brief chats, and snacks along the way-small moments that quietly held our lives together.
Now,things are different.With Blinkit,Zepto,and Instamart,groceries arrive in 10 minutes.While I
still enjoy shopping in the market after work,my mother begins her day by comparing prices on apps and
order everything with a few taps ()The grocery trips that once lifted her mood, improved her health
and helped her stay connected with the neighbourhood have disappeared. The joy of being known,of
interacting,is dying.
And it's not just her. Many of us now rely more on apps and less on people. Our growing reliance on
instant delivery is reducing those everyday moments of interaction. There's the financial cost too. When
you're too tired or too busy to plan your groceries, you end up ordering in pieces-adding things you don't
need just to hit the free-delivery minimum.
Of course, these apps are a gift on tough days when we're sick or short on time. But next time you feel
like opening a grocery app,try walking to your local shop instead. You might come back with more than
just groceries-a smile,a quick chat,and a sense of connection.Sometimes,the cost of convenience isn't
what you pay. It's what you miss
24.What does the author think of early market runs?
A.Adventurous.
B.Complex.
C.Tiring.
D.Valuable
25.How did the author's mother change her shopping habit later?
A.She tumned to online shopping.
B.She visited groceries with neighbors
C.She cared about discounts in stores.
D.She ordered whatever lifted her mood.
26.What concems the author about instant delivery?
A.It takes away small social moments.
B.It involves paying extra service fees.
C.It results in poor physical condition.
D.It makes people addicted to shopping.
27.What is implied in the last paragraph?
A.A shared gift doubles its joy.
B.Convenience comes at a cost
C.A smile is free but wortii a lot.
D.Rush breaks human connection.

Think of evolution(),and you might think of Darwin's natural selection. But according to
researchers writing in the joumal it is not our genes that are determining our cumrent
evolutionary joumey. It is our culture.Cultural evolution eats genetic evolution for breakfast"said
Zachary Wood,a researcher in ecology and environmental sciences at the University of Maine.
Although genetics drove the most fundamental changes in our evolutionary past, this process is
incremental.Cultural evolution,in contrast, can occur within the time it takes to pass a law.Timothy
Waring,an associate professor at the University of Maine, said,Culture solves problems much more
rapidly than genetic evolution. This suggests our species is in the middle of a great evolutionary transition"
Cultural practices integrate everything from farming techniques and legal requirements to medical
advances.Cultural evolution is not new-the transition to agriculture, for example, has seen humans move
from hunter-gatherer societies to permanent settlements. But,Wood and Waring argue, the impact of
cultural evolution is growing. When we see increases in our life expectancy,it is less often the result of
genes and more likely the product of advancements in healthcare and other related aspects.
Still not convinced?"Ask yourself:what matters more for your personal life outcomes, the genes you
are bom with,or the country where you live?"said Waring."Today, your well-being is determined less and
less by your personal biology and more and more by the cultural systems that surround you-your
community,your nation,your technologies."
Some experts believe we are heading towards a future where all of humanity will function as a single
unit, much like an ant colony does.Wood and Waring do not believe we are there yet,but predict
that in the long term, culture will continue to grow in influence over human evolution until genes become
secondary and are ultimately controlled by culture.
28.What does the underlined word"incremental"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Normal.
B.Gradual.
C.Difficult
D.Short.
29.How does the author show the impact of cultural evolution?
A.By giving an example of medical advances
B.By mentioning the origin of human society
C.By citing the opinions of different researchers.
D.By highlighting cultural practices in various areas
30.How did Waring sound in paragraph 4?
A.Confused.
B.Curious.
C.Critical.
D.Confident.
31.What does the last paragraph focus on?
A.The loss of human individuality
B.The speed of cultural change.
C.The future dominance of culture
D.The structure of an ant colony.

Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO
and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the
CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These
trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO into calcium oxalate. Then
bacteria(细菌)present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate(碳酸钙),
a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the COz is kept in solid form
for much longer even after the tree's life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the
University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The
primary concem is determining the exact amount of CO that these trees can transform throughout their
lifetime.Without this accurate data,it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally.
Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are crucial before
worldwide planting of these trees.Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and
develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing
environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural
methods offers an alterative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for
exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural
phenomena like the Kenyan trees,we must ask ourselves:How can we make the best of the power of nature
to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
32.What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A.They absorb more CO2.
B.They help turn COz into solids
C.They release oxygen quickly
D.They live in harmony with bacteria.
33.What is the core challenge before applying the discovery globally?
A.Assessing the cost of the process.
B.Understanding the impact on soil.
C.Calculating the CO2 transformation.
D.Collecting the data on biodiversity.
34.What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A.The seriousness of climate change.
B.The method of green development.
C.The prospect of scientific approaches.
D.The role of nature in climate solutions.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Defensive Strategy in Nature
B.A Recent Advance in CO2 Research
C.Kenyan Trees:A Natural Carbon Lock
D.Tree Planting:A Key to Ecological Balance
