Chen-Ning Yang, one of the greatest physicists of the 20th century, passed away in Beijing at the age of 103. His life was a wonderful combination of academic (学术) excellence and deep love for his motherland.

In 1999, Yang returned to Tsinghua University as a professor. He devoted himself to teaching young talents, even teaching basic physics to freshmen (新生). To support academic research, he gave away over 2,000 books and manuscripts (手稿) to Tsinghua in 2021.
Yang’s influence went far beyond his scientific achievements. He lived a simple life and often encouraged young people to find out the truth and serve the country. He will always be remembered as a scientific giant and a loyal son of China.

On 25 September 2017, the scientific world was shaken by the news that Chinese professor (教授) Zhong Yang had died in a car accident. The well-respected biologist had spent his whole life researching plants and seeds (种子). Over the years, he collected many important seeds for China’s seed bank. When Zhong Yang discovered that there was not enough research of the seeds from across Xizang, he went there to collect seeds himself. In 2001, he began his travels across Xizang. It was very difficult for him to brave the cold weather and great heights. He sometimes fell sick, but he always continued with his work.
Zhong Yang knew it was better to include more people when doing important work. He began a programme to find and train local students to do field research to become scientists. Together, he and his team collected more than 40 million seeds from around 1,000 areas. Their hard work provided the world with lots of new information about the plants in China.
Zhong Yang left behind more than just a huge collection of seeds. His love for his job and research lives on in his students. He once said, “My students will continue on the road of scientific exploration and the seeds we have collected may grow hundreds of years from now.”

On the evening of December 31, 2025, Tsinghua University held its 2026 New Year Party in the university sports hall. During the party, school leaders gave the 2025 Student of the Year Award to Pang Zhongwang, a PhD student from the Department of Precision Instruments. Many people believe that light bulbs were invented by Thomas Edison. Is that true?
Edison was born in 1847 in Milan, Ohio, USA.In school, Edison was often absent-minded, and his teacher did not think that he was very smart. Nine kilometers under the sea, inside a small metal ball, Du Mengran saw something surprising: life in a place that should have been lifeless. The submersible’s (潜水器) lights cut through water that had never seen the sun. At this depth, the water pressure is so strong that it can kill a person all at once. The water is almost freezing. In the summer of 2024, Du and her team took the Chinese submarine Fendouzhe to the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench in the Pacific Ocean. They found the deepest place where animals have ever been found. Life was living between 5,800 meters and 9,533 meters below the sea. This is a very deep area, the last unknown part of the ocean. We know more about the surface of Mars than about this place. Their important findings were published in the magazine Nature in July 2025.
Du’s love for the sea started when she was a child. Born in Anhui, a place far from the ocean, she first saw the sea at age 4 or 5 during a trip to Beidaihe. She was so happy that she wanted to stay by the sea forever. This love led her to study ocean science. After studying in the US, she joined the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2014. At 25, she became the youngest woman scientist on the manned submarine Jiaolong. At 33, she led a team to dive to a world-record depth, and by 38, she had completed more than 30 deep dives.
Now 38, Du is still exploring. Last March, she and her team went to the Puysegur Trench near New Zealand, one of the most dangerous seas on Earth. Du says, “To understand the unknown, you must go there, experience it, and see it with your own eyes.” She is called the “deep-sea queen”, and she is ready to explore more secrets hidden in the dark deep sea.

Many people believe that light bulbs were invented by Thomas Edison. Is that true?

Nine kilometers under the sea, inside a small metal ball, Du Mengran saw something surprising: life in a place that should have been lifeless.
