Teenage Book Sharer
Wang Min, a Grade Eight student, has built a small free book corner in her community for two years. She loves reading so much that she wants more kids around her to enjoy the fun of books. Everything started when she finished reading a great novel last year. She wanted to share it with others, but most of her classmates only read textbooks and seldom read storybooks in their free time. Then she came up with the idea of setting up a free book corner at the community gate.
At the beginning, she only put her own books there, less than fifty in total. She stuck a notice on the wall: “Take one book, leave one book if you can.” Many neighbours saw the notice and supported her. Some parents sent their children’s old storybooks, magazines and science books. Now the book corner has more than 300 books, including history books, travel books, animal stories and English readers.
Wang Min spends one hour every Sunday afternoon managing the book corner. She sorts books into different kinds, mends broken pages and writes simple book reviews on small cards for readers. She also sets up a reading sharing group for students in the neighbourhood. Every two weeks, they meet beside the book corner to talk about their favourite stories. Some shy students become outgoing after joining the group, because they can freely share their ideas without worrying about making mistakes.
Last month, the community gave Wang Min a small prize for her warm action. Reporters asked her if she felt tired of managing the book corner. She smiled and said, “Books connect people. When I see little kids sit quietly reading here, all my tiredness goes away. I plan to add more English storybooks for middle school students this summer, and hold a story-telling competition in August.”
Wang Min’s small book corner has become a popular relaxing place for children in the neighbourhood. Her story tells us that small warm actions can bring great changes to our daily life.

How Sleep Helps Middle School Students
Many Grade Eight students stay up late every day. They finish homework until 10:30 or even later, then spend another hour playing mobile phones before sleep. Most of them sleep less than seven hours every night. However, doctors say teenagers aged 13-15 need at least nine hours’ sleep to keep healthy and study well. Short sleep brings lots of bad influences on students’ bodies and minds.
First, enough sleep improves learning and memory. When you sleep, your brain sorts out all the knowledge you learned during the day and stores useful information. If you lack sleep, you will easily forget new words, maths rules and history facts the next morning. A study shows students who sleep nine hours every night get 15% higher scores in exams than those who sleep six hours or less. Many students complain they can’t focus in class, and the real reason is not bad study habits, but poor sleep.
Second, good sleep keeps your mood stable. Short sleep makes people easy to get angry and worried. You may argue with your parents or classmates over tiny things without reason. When you sleep well, you can control your feelings better and solve problems calmly. Teachers also find that students with enough sleep take part in class activities more actively and are more willing to communicate with others.
Besides, sleep protects your physical health. During deep sleep, your body repairs tired muscles and improves your immune system. Students who always stay up late get colds and headaches more often. They also feel sleepy during PE classes and cannot finish running or ball games well. What’s worse, staying up late for years may cause poor eyesight and slow growth.
If you want better sleep, here are simple tips: Put down your phone 30 minutes before bedtime; do not drink cola or eat snacks at night; keep your bedroom dark and quiet. Try to go to bed before 9:30 p.m. as much as you can. Good sleep is the cheapest and most useful way to improve your study and health.

My Experience in Australia’s Summer Camp
Last summer vacation, I joined a one-month international summer camp in Sydney, Australia. Before leaving China, I felt really nervous. I worried that my oral English was too poor to talk with foreign students, and I was afraid I couldn’t get used to Australian food. But the whole month turned out to be the most wonderful experience I have ever had.
I lived with a warm Australian host family. Mr. and Mrs. Smith have two teenage kids, Tom and Lily. They were very patient with me. Every evening, they talked with me slowly and taught me many daily English expressions I never learned in textbooks. At first, I only said simple words, but two weeks later, I could talk with them freely about school, hobbies and Chinese culture. I also taught them how to make dumplings, and they loved Chinese food very much.
The camp had different kinds of interesting courses every day. We learned ocean knowledge at the seaside, painted local animal pictures and took part in group sports matches. My favourite activity was the cultural sharing party. Every student brought special things from their own country. I took paper cuttings and told my new foreign friends stories about Chinese traditional festivals. Many students showed great interest in Chinese culture and asked me lots of questions.
During weekends, the Smith family took me to visit famous places in Sydney, such as the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. I took hundreds of photos and kept a travel diary every night to record all special feelings.
When the camp ended, I didn’t want to leave. I made lots of close friends from different countries. This trip not only improved my English greatly, but also taught me that different cultures can get along well with each other. I hope I can visit Australia again someday and meet my host family and friends once more.
( )36. How long did the writer stay in the Australian summer camp?
A. For one week B. For two weeks

( )38. What did the writer teach the Smith family?
A. How to paint animal pictures
B. How to play ball games
C. How to make Chinese dumplings
D. How to write travel diaries
( )39. What activity did the writer like best at camp?
A. Ocean knowledge class
B. Cultural sharing party
C. Seaside hiking

B. The trip helped the writer make progress in English
C. Foreign students knew much about China before the party
D. The writer will never go to Australia again

Last term, our teacher asked us to take part in a one-day countryside volunteer activity. I didn’t want to go at first, because I planned to stay at home and watch my favourite cartoon shows. My mum told me that helping others could bring special happiness, so I 41 to join the activity in the end.
We took the school bus to a small mountain village early in the morning. When we arrived, we saw many old villagers standing at the village gate to 42 us. The village was quiet and beautiful, with green trees around small houses. Our group’s task was to help clean the village roads and read newspapers for the elderly who couldn’t see clearly.
I worked with three classmates to pick up rubbish on the road. There were plastic bags, broken bottles and waste paper everywhere. At the beginning, I felt 43 because the rubbish smelt bad. But when I saw an old grandma watching us and smiling warmly, I kept working without stopping. We spent two hours cleaning all the roads, and the whole village looked much 44 after our hard work.
Then we visited the old people’s houses. An 80-year-old grandpa asked me to read sports news for him. He used to love playing basketball when he was young, but his legs hurt so he couldn’t move around easily. I read the newspaper 45 and clearly. He told me many interesting stories about his young days. He also gave me a small hand-made paper bird as a 46 . I felt so warm inside.
At noon, the villagers prepared simple but delicious lunch for us, including fresh vegetables and local fruit. After lunch, we walked to the river and 47 small saplings beside the village river. We hoped the 48 could grow big and make the village more beautiful in the future.
Time passed quickly. Soon it was time for us to 49 . All the villagers waved to us and said thanks again and again. On the bus back to school, I thought about the whole day carefully. I used to think fun only came from cartoons and computer 50 , but now I knew that true happiness comes from 51 others.
This volunteer activity taught me a lot. We don’t need to do great big things to help people. Small actions, such as cleaning rubbish or reading newspapers, can make other people’s life much 52 . I told myself that I would take part in more volunteer activities in my free time later. I also advised my classmates that we should 53 more care about old people around us and protect the natural environment all the time.
Now every month, our class makes a small volunteer 54 together. Some students help clean the community park, some 55 books for old neighbours, and others hand out leaflets about environmental protection. Every time I take part in these activities, I can feel the same warm feeling I got in the mountain village that day. Helping others is the best gift we can give to the world.
