The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world. It covers over 9,000,000 square kilometers across North Africa. The weather there can be very different in a day’s time. During the day, temperatures rise above 40℃, while nights can be very cold. It’s one of the toughest (艰难的) environments on earth.
The Sahara is as big as Canada but has very few people. Less than two and a half million people live there; most of them are nomads. Nomads are people who have no permanent (固定的) homes. They move from place to place, carrying everything they need to live. The nomads of the Sahara depend on goats, sheep, and camels (骆驼) for food and transport. Water is the most important for them; they need water to live, so they must carry enough water or know where to find it. Without water, life is impossible.
A desert is not defined (定义) by sand but by the lack of rain. To be a desert, a place must get less than 250 mm of rain each year. Surprisingly, only 25% of the Sahara is covered in sand. The rest is rock and gravel (砂砾).
The Sahara was once much wetter and greener. Over time, it became the desert we see today. Truly, the Sahara is a place of history and change.

Positive people can always see the good side and believe that they can do things better through their own efforts. Then, how should we make ourselves positive and full of positive energy?

In the process of getting success, we will experience lots of failures. If you give up when facing difficulties, you will never achieve success.
Keep learning
A person’s ability depends on his learning ability. If you want to be a positive and energetic person, you need to learn some new skills and master some new knowledge.

“Dad, are you happy today?” My daughter Wendy asked me when I took her home from school on March 20.
“Why are you asking this?” I asked.
“Today is the International Day of Happiness,” she said. “It’s a day to be happy!”
“So did you have a happy day at school?”
“Of course! I played volleyball with my friend and I enjoyed it so much.”
“Good,” I said. “If you’re happy, then I am happy, too.” Talking about happiness with my daughter made me think more about happiness.
How can I get happiness? Maybe I should feel happy when my wife (妻子) says my cooking is very good. I know she’s very kind, because I’m not a really good cook. Maybe I should be happy when my best friend says I play basketball well, but I know he says that just to make me happy. I know I’m not good at basketball. The more I think this way, the less happy I feel. My daughter doesn’t think so much about happiness, so she’s happy on most days. Maybe I can learn something from her about how to be happy. I should just enjoy the moment and think less about it.

Dear friends, today I finished my work as a school gatekeeper. Thirty years have passed quickly, and they are the most precious (珍贵的) years of my life. Every day I stood at the school gate, greeting the students and keeping them safe, which I will never forget.
I can still remember my first day on this job. I was a little nervous, not knowing how to get along with the kids. A little girl walked up to me, handed me a small drawing, and said, “Uncle, you look kind.” That sweet gift and warm words gave me courage to do my job well.
Over the years, I have seen many touching moments. Every morning, the students would wave and say “Good morning” to me. When it rained, I lent my umbrella to those who forgot theirs. On my birthday, some students brought me small cards with their best wishes. Gradually, I felt that my job was meaningful and important. I watched the students grow from little kids to young adults.

【原文】
Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly while you are trying to study? Or when your best friend does not wait for you after school? If you do, you need to take control of your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry with people can cause you to lose friends. Gary, an American high school teacher, has written a book to help you control your feelings. It tells you how to stay calm when bad things happen to you. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It can never make them better. Getting angry is not a natural way to show your feelings. The book says all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry. When a baby falls over, it only cries if people are watching it. Like a baby, you should get angry only if you are sure it is the right thing to do.
16.ways 17.relax 18.talking 19.walk 20.list
【原文】 People who are under too much stress can experience different health problems. It’s necessary to come up with proper ways to lower the stress. Different people have different ways. For Tina, the best way to relax is to watch comedies. It brings her lots of fun. After watching and laughing aloud, she forgets all her worries. Mary thinks talking with her family and friends is the best way to lower the stress. She loves them so much! When Jimmy is unhappy or upset, he likes listening to music. Music has magic to cheer him up. As for Claudia, she chooses to walk around the neighborhood. Walking helps her a lot. Cathy always makes a list. She thinks there is no need to think much about endless tasks. Just complete them one after another.

24.A
