Host: Our question today is: Why do we explore space? Let’s talk to space scientist Dr Yang. Welcome, Dr Yang!
Dr Yang: Thank you very much. Well, there are three good reasons to explore space. First, to improve our knowledge of Earth and its place in the universe.
Host: Could you explain that a bit more?
Dr Yang: Sure. The study of other planets helps us better understand Earth’s geology, history, and relationship with other planets.
Host: Oh, right.
Dr Yang: Second, technology developed for space can benefit us here on Earth.
Host: Could you give our listeners an example?
Dr Yang: Of course. Some satellites, for example, help us deal with problems caused by climate change.
Host: Yes, that’s very useful. And the third reason?
Dr Yang: Well, at some point in the far future, we may find new resources in outer space. It might sound crazy, but our Earth may run out of resources. In that case, a new home for us human beings will be needed.
Host: Wow, interesting! Maybe Mars will be made into our new home in the future.

To the Stars and Beyond
Since the beginning of human history, people have looked up at the stars and wondered what they were like. Many ancient cultures believed that these points of light were from gods or other mysterious worlds. However, as technology and science developed, we learnt the truth about stars. They are real places like our own sun, and they are further away than anyone imagined. This raises the question: Can we visit the stars one day?
The man‑made object which has travelled furthest from Earth is Voyager 1. This spacecraft was launched in 1977. In case Voyager 1 is found by alien life, a special record with sounds and pictures from Earth is carried on board. It shows who we are and where we are from. Now, Voyager 1 is an amazing 23.5 billion kilometres from Earth, but that is still a long way from Earth’s nearest star, Proxima Centauri. That star is 4.2 light years away—about 40 trillion kilometres!
The challenge of visiting the stars gets even bigger for space flights with humans. The furthest that any human has gone in space is only about 400,000 kilometres, around the other side of the moon. Time is a big problem. At present, even a journey to the planet Mars will take around six to nine months. What will the astronauts eat and drink during this period? And how about their health and safety? These problems grow when we talk about visiting another star. It might take hundreds of thousands of years to get there!
Scientists, however, believe that visiting the stars is not a completely wild dream. One idea is to have the astronauts sleep during their journey like some animals do in winter. Another is to develop much faster spacecraft. While this is not possible yet, the future may hold exciting possibilities.

So far, humans have landed on the moon six times. If humans want to stay on the moon for a long time in the future, there will be a need for a source (来源) of food. It’s really a challenge, but scientists are taking steps toward making moon farming possible. Now Chinese researchers said that they had found a way to make moon soil (月球土壤) used for farming by introducing earth bacteria (地球细菌).
Researchers from China tested five kinds of bacteria. They found during a period of 10 to 21 days, three of them doubled phosphorus content (磷含量), which is necessary for the growth of plants.
In the next step of the study, the researchers grew model plants in man-made moon soil with the three kinds of bacteria for 24 days. They discovered that the plants had longer stems and roots (茎和根) after six days, and heavier and wider leaves after 24 days, compared with those grown without the bacteria.
Besides, in another 24-day test, scientists found that plants with those bacteria had more chlorophyll (叶绿素), which helps plants use energy from light to grow.
China has made a plan for landing astronauts on the moon before 2030 to do scientific study. As astronauts need to live on the moon for a long time, bringing all food to the moon will cost a lot of money. Growing plants there will be helpful. However, earlier tests showed that moon soil was bad for growing plants. Many people began to feel hopeless. But this test offers them a good possible pick-me-up.

固定搭配 need to do sth.,to后面直接用动词原形短语。

固定搭配bring sth. to sb. 备选词happy(开心的,形容词),变名词为happiness(快乐、愉悦)。
