Look outside. You can see if it’s sunny or rainy. But the tree outside your window knows more. It has watched the weather all its life and knows the local climate (气候) well. Climate is the weather over 30 years or more. It tells us things like “does it rain a lot?” or “is winter cold?”
To learn about past climate, scientists study trees. Trees can live for hundreds, even thousands of years. Some years are wetter, drier, colder or hotter than usual. All these leave marks (痕迹) on the trees.
