“Ouch!” I cried. My handphone was nowhere in sight, leaving me with no way of calling for help. I was trapped in my car alone. It all happened in a flash. I had hit my brakes hard to avoid hitting a goat that was running across the road. To my horror, the car crashed onto a lamppost near the crossing of Mandai Road and Yishun Road. Without my glasses, I was lost. When there was no smoke indicating(暗示) no immediate disaster, I breathed a sigh of relief. Just then, a boy rushed over from across the road despite his friends shouting out to him about the oncoming traffic.
“Madam, are you all right?” the boy asked gently. He introduced himself as Ashvin and I asked him to help me look for my glasses. I was thankful when he found my glasses at the rear seat. When I put on my glasses, I saw Ashvin’s friends looking at us from afar. Ashvin was determined to stay by my car to comfort me. I smiled weakly and thanked him.
From my car, I saw the goat’s horns stuck between the green metal fences by the side of the road. The goat must have been frightened by the loud bang and had charged into the metal fences. Eventually, it somehow managed to free itself and ran into the woods nearby. Not far away, I could see several bystanders using their handphones to film the scene. They must be taking pictures to post on social media about this accident. However, shouldn’t they be helping someone in need? I was upset. Just then, someone in the crowd shouted, “Watch out! The lamppost is falling!” The lamppost hit by my car was leaning towards my vehicle. Fear took over my body。
“Oh no!” I cried. Death seemed to be a certainty. To my surprise, many drivers got out of their cars and rushed forward to support the lamppost. They took turns to hold up the lamppost until help arrived. Soon, the maintenance-workers reached the scene. They used equipment to support the lamppost. After a few minutes, an ambulance arrived and I was wheeled into the ambulance. I finally managed to escape with minor injuries. That was when I realized how lucky I had been.
24.What caused the car accident?
A.Making a phone call while driving. B.Loss of view caused by the missing glasses.
C.The malfunctioning of the brakes. D.The intention to avoid hitting an animal.
25.In paragraph 1, the author breathed in relief because ________.
A.a boy would rush to her aid B.there was a slight chance of an explosion
C.she wasn’t hurt badly D.the oncoming traffic was not busy
26.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The author’s glasses were broken.
B.The author managed to free the goat from the fences.
C.The accident was reported on social media.
D.The car crash made the lamppost lean down.
27.The author finally escaped death as ________.
A.several drivers prevented the lamppost from falling down
B.the lamppost wasn’t heavy enough to hurt her badly
C.She ran to avoid the hit of the lamppost
D.an ambulance arrived in time to save her life

In a breakthrough for the field of neuroscience(神经科学), scientists have developed a new brain-computer interface (BCI) that allows a paralyzed (瘫痪的) man to speak through a digital avatar (数字化身). This is a significant leap beyond previous BCIs, which required users to spell words letter by letter at a painfully slow pace. The new system taps into the brain’s deep and complex neural code for speech.
The study involved a 47-year-old man who lost his ability to speak after a brainstem stroke. Surgeons implanted a thin sheet of 253 electrodes onto the surface of his brain over the area that controls speech. These electrodes intercept (拦截) the brain signals that would have gone to his lips, tongue, jaw, and larynx. A cable(电缆) connects the implant to a bank of computers, which translate these signals into text and then into spoken words.
To train the system’s AI algorithms, the man repeatedly tried to say a 1,024-word vocabulary while the computer recorded his brain signals. Finally, the computer learned to identify which signals corresponded to which phonemes — the tiny sub-units of speech that form words. When the man attempts to speak, the system decodes(解码)these phonemes at a rate of about 80 words per minute. While this is still much slower than natural conversation (150 words per minute), it is a vast improvement over previous BCI typing speeds.
Perhaps the most emotional aspect of the technology is the customized avatar. The researchers worked with a company that creates hyper-realistic animations to build a digital face that mirrors the man’s own features. They also used software that recreated his pre-injury voice based on a recording of him speaking at his wedding. When the man thinks a sentence, the avatar speaks it in his voice with a smile, a frown, or a raised eyebrow. A simple sentence like “It is nice to see you” becomes a powerful moment of human connection. The team is now working to make the system wireless, cutting the physical cable that connects him to the computer.
28.How does the new BCI differ from previous ones?
A.It requires surgery to implant electrodes.
B.It helps patients who have lost a limb.
C.It allows for faster word generation.
D.It focuses on writing rather than speaking.
29.What role do the 253 electrodes play?
A.They record neural signals from the speech area.
B.They send sounds directly to the patient’s ear.
C.They stimulate the vocal cords to vibrate.
D.They power the digital avatar wirelessly.
30.What is the purpose of mentioning the patient’s wedding video?
A.To show how emotional the process is.
B.To explain where the avatar’s voice came from.
C.To prove that the patient could once speak normally.
D.To advertise the company that created the avatar.
31.What is the next major goal for the research team?
A.Increasing the vocabulary size. B.Making the implant cable-free.
C.Improving the decoding speed. D.Reducing the number of electrodes.

Many educators have been teaching themselves how to use AI. For Jerome Ong, a 5th-grade teacher in Ridgewood, New Jersey, AI has changed the way he approaches teaching. He now uses AI tools every week in his classroom. “You have to find what works for your students,” he said. Ong not only teaches his students what AI is, but also shows them its limitations. In class, he has students challenge AI repeatedly. “If you keep correcting it and say, ‘No, you’re wrong,’ eventually AI will admit its mistake. This shows students that AI isn’t really as smart as they think it is,” Ong explained.
This summer, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic announced a first-of-its-kind plan to train hundreds of thousands of members of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). “I think if we’re going to make AI work for students, we need to listen to teachers,” said Microsoft president Brad Smith. The $23 million investment will go toward virtual and in-person training in New York City.
“The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to use them, set practical guidelines and put teachers in the driver’s seat, teaching and learning can be better,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten.
However, critics (批评家) mention cheating concerns and Microsoft’s own research, which showed a reduction in critical thinking skills when AI was not used responsibly. AFT member Lois Weiner thinks teachers would be better served by more support within schools than by a partnership with Silicon Valley. “There is so much boredom in the job, but the answer to that is to improve teachers’ working conditions,” said Weiner, adding that AI does not create better work conditions for teachers.
Smith argued education should be left to teachers: “Those of us in the tech field need to provide the tools and help school boards, districts, and teachers so they decide how to put those tools into practice.”
32.What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A.AI makes frequent mistakes. B.AI breaks down completely.
C.AI sometimes fails to meet expectations. D.AI runs out of power quickly.
33.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Tech companies will train American teachers.
B.Microsoft donates $23 million to poor schools.
C.Brad Smith supports students in using AI.
D.AI firms help improve kids’ learning ability.
34.What can be inferred from Lois Weiner’s comments?
A.AI may relieve teachers from boring tasks.
B.Teachers are smarter than AI systems.
C.More school-based support is needed for teachers.
D.Cooperating with tech companies is helpful for teachers.
35.What is Brad Smith’s attitude towards AI in education?
A.Disapproving. B.Favorable. C.Doubtful. D.Uncaring.
Ordinary Heroes: Live a Meaningful Life
Sometimes you find heroes in unlikely places. I mean ordinary folks living simple but meaningful lives — they’re real heroes to me. A while back, we visited a major city. David and I met many hardworking people serving their communities. 36 We felt deep respect for those who built this nation with courage and vision.
37 Our driver was a kind, friendly man with a foreign accent. He talked about driving a cab for 33 years. With “dad pride”, he said his three kids graduated from good colleges and have good jobs now. “You’re a great parent,” I said. “What’s your secret?”
“My secret is this land,” he laughed. “Work hard here, and you’ll reach your dream.” “Some might disagree,” I said. “They’ve never lived through difficult times,” he paused. 38 I saw a small family photo on his dashboard. “People here don’t know what it’s like to lose everything,” he said softly.
When young, he studied engineering in his home country. But here, he’s driven a cab day after day, year after year. He’s past his best years. “My kids are smart,” he smiled. “ 39 ”“I’m truly blessed,” he said.
This ordinary man lived with gratitude and knew real contentment. 40 I knew we’d met a true hero that day.
A.We visited some famous buildings that day.
B.These people contribute so much to our society.
C.He left his hometown during a period of social unrest.
D.But the real hero appeared in an unexpected place — a taxi.
E.I felt that life must have been playing tricks on this humble soul.
F.They call every weekend just to chat and ask “Dad, how are you?”
G.He often shares small, warm stories about his family with passengers.

Dutch inventor Boyan Slat believes that the world’s ocean plastic crisis could be 56 (significant) reduced within the next 15 years. His nonprofit organization, The Ocean Cleanup, is already using technology designed to stop waste before it reaches the sea.
The approach focuses 57 rivers, where much of the world’s ocean plastic originates. Floating 58 (barrier) trap broken pieces as they flow downstream, while autonomous interceptor boats (拦截船) equipped with conveyor belts collect the waste 59 send it for recycling or disposal. According to Slat, targeting just 30 cities could prevent around a third of the plastic currently entering the oceans. He claims that the Motagua River in Guatemala sends 60 (much) plastic into the sea than all 38 members of the OECD (经合组织).
His team aims to tackle the hot spots by 2030. The longer-term goal is to stop 90% of floating plastic pollution 61 (reach) the sea by 2040, while also clearing existing accumulation (积聚) zones. Slat left his aerospace (航天航空) engineering studies 62 (pursue) the idea over a decade ago. Since then, the organization has removed nearly 50m kilograms of plastic waste from rivers and oceans around the world already. “The world needs a success story. There is lots of 63 (pessimistic) among people of my generation,” Slat said. “But if we can say, ‘There was a time 64 the oceans were filled with plastic and that two thirds of the planet 65 (be) polluted, and then we solved it.’ — I think that will be a case of inspiring action.”

My Summer Plan for Senior Year
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs. Brown in middle school. After he entered middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others.
He was told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
In an English writing class, Mrs. Brown asked them to read a novel and write a new essay for the novel after finishing reading. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs. Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written.
When David saw that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day, after he returned home he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs. Brown the next morning. And again he was praised.
David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs. Brown to read and correct them for him. Mrs. Brown always pointed out the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer the boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs. Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now:
