We’re increasingly relying on automation and artificial intelligence in everyday life. But we still don’t quite trust robots and fear they will take our jobs.
Humankind has a complicated relationship with robots. On the one hand, we appreciate how they can do dangerous, repetitive work so we don’t have to. Robots don’t need vacations or medical insurance. And in areas such as agriculture, where farmers can’t find enough people to pick the produce, robots can shoulder some of those tasks. But polls (民意调查) show that the growing robotization of the planet makes us feel deeply agitated - and threatened.
Pew Research Center surveys found that more than 80 percent of Americans believed thạt by 2050, robots would do much of the work humans now do and about 75 percent believed that would make economic inequality worse. Across lines of race, age, and education, people who said automation has hurt workers outnumbered those who said it’s helped workers by two to one.
National Geographic sent David Berreby around the world to look at the present and future state of robots in society.
“Robots now deliver food in Milton Keynes, England, carry supplies in a Dallas hospital, disinfect (给……消毒) patients’ rooms in China and some European countries, and wander parks in Singapore, asking pedestrians (行人) to maintain social distance,” Berreby writes.
“It’s an unavoidable fact that we are going to have machines, artificial creatures; that will be a part of our daily life,” Carnegie Mellon University AI roboticist Manuela Veloso told Berreby. “When you start accepting robots around you, like a third species, along with pets and humans, you want to relate to them.”
A third species? That’s a new idea indeed. But were not there yet. So far, Berreby reports, robots can’t equal the human mind’s ability to do a lot of tasks, especially unexpected ones, and robots haven’t yet mastered common sense - all sill required to be a magazine editor.
4. What does the underlined word “agitated” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Disappointed B. Proud. C. Comfortable D. Worried.
5. What did Pew Research Center surveys show?
A Most people regarded workplace automation as good.
B. Most people agreed robots helped stimulate the economy.
C. More people thought robots did more harm than good.
D. More people feared robots would bring more social problems.
6. What does David Berreby’s description imply?
A. People enjoy robots’ company.
B. People have a growing reliance on robots,
C Robots will pose a serious threat to humans.
D. Robots will soon replace humans in many fields.
7. What is David Berreby’s attitude to accepting robots as a third species?
A. Disapproving. B. Favorable. C. Concerned. D. Reserved

Global sea levels continue to rise despite efforts that cities around the world are making to reduce the effects of climate change and their carbon emissions. One firm, however, is hoping to battle the effects of climate change. Driven by alarming estimates that 36.6 million people in Asian coastal cities like Mumbai could face flooding by 2070, Luca Curci Architects, based in Venice, Italy, has released Floating City — a design that would allow urban areas to rise with the waters while making use of renewable energies to reduce their own carbon emissions.
Each 25-acre unit houses 50,000 residents on interconnected platforms, with potential expansion for 200,000and buildings are capped at 90 meters tall for stability. “Structures must be flexible like bamboo in wind to resist waves,” explains architect Curci. To achieve this, seawater resistant materials are given priority to, while hollow sections in platforms help them float. Meanwhile, movable bridges are constructed to link these “water neighborhoods” to mainland transport systems.
The project team also envisions a mix of renewable energy sources extracting power from wind, water, and the sun to power the city. During extreme weather, platforms automatically separate and regroup using intelligence algorithms inspired by how fish schools avoid hunters.
Compared to building artificial islands, this method preserves 68% more marine (海洋) life and uses surfaces that absorb rainwater to reduce flooding risks. However, challenges persist. Seawater slowly harms materials, requiring repair every four months, and emergency plans for extreme weather are still under way. “This isn’t about abandoning coasts but evolving with them,” notes designer Tim Fu.
While some question long-term possibility, the design redefines urban resilience. Unlike rigid sea walls, these dynamic structures harmonize with oceanic rhythms, offering a blueprint for climate solutions. “Cities must learn to dance with the waves,” Curci says. This philosophy could transform humanity’s relationship with rising seas, turning threats into sustainable opportunities.
8. What drove Luca Curci Architects to come up with a new design?
A. Energy crisis. B. Potential disasters.
C. Tourism expansion. D. Overcrowded cities.
9. Which of the following best describes Luca Curci’s design?
A. Fictional and renewable. B. Adaptable and innovative.
C. Eco-friendly and immovable. D. Wave-resistant and conventional.
10. A limitation of Luca Curci’s design is that ______.
A. it threatens marine life B. it lacks clean energy options
C. it requires regular maintenance D. it ignores coastal water changes
11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ocean Protection: Life under Threat B. Rising with the Tides: Floating Cities
C. Connecting to the Future: Eco Solutions D. Coastal Design: Inspiration from Bamboo
D
A challenge of teaching mathematics rather than, say, history is that the homework is a lot harder to come up with. After all, “Was Henry Ⅷ a good king?” is a reasonable question to ask either a classroom of nine-year-olds or a lecture theatre of postgraduates. But “Solve this quadratic equation (二次方程式)” would leave the classroom at a loss and the lecture theatre unimpressed. Maths is learned by doing and designing a problem that is easy enough to be accessible, yet hard enough to be satisfying, is a big headache in itself.
Partly for this reason, books that successfully communicate how mathematicians think, but are aimed at those not already in the field, are both valuable and rare. Now Sir David Spiegelhalter, professor of statistics at the University of Cambridge, has added to the category with The Art of Uncertainty. His new book will appeal to many more than just mathematicians, for its topic is universal: how to analyse chance, uncertainty and risk.
If a new virus is running wild and the majority of deaths are among those who have received a newer vaccine, is that evidence that the vaccination program is harmful? How much of top football teams’ performance comes down to luck rather than skill? Professor Spiegelhalter’s exploration of such questions is delightful. First, he uses them to illustrate broader ideas about how probability and statistics work. So a discussion of vaccine safety proceeds to Bayes’s theorem (贝叶斯定理), a procedure for improving one’s judgment of probabilities as new evidence comes to light. The joy of Professor Spiegelhalter’s approach is that he reaches this deep truth through nothing more than some intuitive assumptions and very simple maths.
Most important, though, is Professor Spiegelhalter’s skill at communicating these ideas. Much of probability and statistics can go against our intuition, and the maths behind it is often fearsome. But this is not a difficult book to read or understand.
12. What can we know from paragraph 1?
A. Designing math homework is easier.
B. Quadratic equation may confuse young learners.
C. Nine-year-olds enjoy history questions.
D. Postgraduates find math problems too simple.
13. What is the biggest selling point of The Art of Uncertainty according to the author?
A. It covers various topics.
B. It casts light on math thoughts.
C. It satisfies maths professionals.
D. It makes sense to ordinary people.
14. How does Professor Spiegelhalter explain probability and statistics?
A. By using advanced mathematical formulas.
B. By analyzing real-life questions with simple maths.
C. By discussing complex scientific theories.
D. By conducting experiments in lecture theatres.
15. The text is probably written to ______.
A. introduce a new book on mathematics.
B. compare teaching mathematics with history.
C. explain complex mathematical theories simply.
D. persuade people to study probability and statistics.

For Jake, the journey from high school to college had never seemed so challenging. The real world— the campus life he had heard so much about, the decisions on what to study, what career to pursue, and how to find his place— felt like a heavy weight on his chest. He had no clue what his future held.
One afternoon, Jake’s mom suggested he spend some time volunteering at the community center. “It might be a good way to take your mind off things,” she said. At first, he resisted. Volunteering didn't sound like the right way to prepare for college. He needed to focus on his future, not wasting time helping others. But eventually, he agreed unwillingly.
When Jake first arrived at the center, the atmosphere felt unfamiliar but warm. It was a small, comfortable space with colorful walls, art supplies, and kids playing in the corner. He was assigned to help with the kids’ art class. The first few days were uneventful. Jake just sat back, passing out crayons, organizing the art supplies, and occasionally offering a word of encouragement to the kids.
But one particular day, a girl caught his attention. Her name was Layla, and she was sitting in the corner, quietly staring down at a blank canvas (画布), with her hands wrapped tightly around a paintbrush. Her brush paused above the canvas as if she were waiting for permission to make the first mark.
Jake had no experience with art and didn’t know how to guide Layla. But something about her hesitation touched his heart. He walked over to her and asked, “Hey, Layla, what's going on? Why aren't you painting?” She looked up at him with large brown eyes, then down at her hands, which were holding the paintbrush tightly but not moving. “I’m not good at it,” she replied. “I don’t know how to make it look like what’s in my mind.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Jake sat beside her, smiling.

【答案】Dear Future Me
As Senior Year kicks off, memories of Grade 11 are still fresh. I joined the debate club, sharpening my thinking and communication skills through intense discussions and competitions. Math was tough, but teachers’ help and peers’ support got me through challenging problems.
However, I deeply realize my flaws. Procrastination made me rush through assignments, often sacrificing quality, and my poor time-management messed up the balance between study and rest. This year, I’ll set strict daily goals, use a planner to track tasks, and kick these bad habits. With lessons learned, I’m ready to embrace Senior Year’s challenges and strive for my dreams.
Your friend,

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】
Jake sat beside her, smiling. “You know, Layla,” he said gently, “art isn’t about making something look perfect. It’s about expressing what’s inside you. There’s no right or wrong way to paint. Just close your eyes and think about that beautiful thing in your mind, then let the brush move freely on the canvas.” Layla listened intently, her eyes fixed on Jake. Slowly, she took a deep breath and made the first stroke. Jake watched with encouragement, nodding and offering words of praise for each new color she added. Bit by bit, a beautiful landscape emerged on the canvas.
As Layla’s confidence grew, Jake felt a shift within himself. He realized that helping others could bring such a sense of fulfillment. The joy on Layla’s face when she finally saw her completed painting was like a light bulb going off in his head. He understood that his own future didn’t have to be a burden. Just as he had guided Layla to express herself, he could also find his own path step by step. Volunteering wasn’t a waste of time at all.
