Have you ever seen a long line of ants and wondered how they work together so well? The secret is how they “talk” to each other. Ants don’t use words. They have their own special ways to communicate.
The most important way is through smells. When a worker ant finds some food, it walks back to its nest. As it walks, it leaves a special smell on the ground. This smell is like a map. Other ants can smell this path with their feelers and follow it to the food. When many ants use the same path, the smell becomes stronger. That’s why you see those straight lines of ants.
Ants also use smells for warning. If an ant is in danger, it sends out a different smell. This smell tells other ants, “Be careful! Danger is near!” Then the other ants will quickly run away or come to fight.
Besides smells, ants use touch to communicate. When two ants meet, they often touch each other’s feelers. It’s like they are shaking hands and sharing news. ▲ For example, they can tell if the other ant is a friend from the same nest.
