单元阅读精练
Yan Ziyi was born in 2008 in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province.
In the third grade, she started competing in softball and shot put.
In the fifth grade, she was noticed by the head coach of Ningbo Sports School. He thought she was an ideal candidate for throwing events.
Her decision to pursue athletics professionally was not initially fully supported by her family. Her parents hoped she would focus on academics and enjoy a stable upbringing. But after repeated encouragement from the coach, they ended up agreeing. So at age 12, Yan Ziyi began systematic professional training.
Every morning started with professional training sessions focused on strength, run-up technique, and throwing repetitions. Even during summer and winter breaks, she rarely had time off. Such intense workloads inevitably led to strains and muscle fatigue.
For nutrition, she ate a high-protein coastal diet: fish, shrimp, and shellfish daily.
With natural talent, relentless effort, and the right diet, she was competing above her age group by the age of 15.
At the 2023 World Schools Sport Games in Brazil, she won gold medals in both the javelin and shot put.
After that, she soon qualified for the Paris Olympics, but was ineligible to attend since she wasn't yet 18.
On May 22, 2026, Yan Ziyi turned 18, finally becoming eligible for all senior-level international competitions.
The very next day, she made her debut at the World Athletics Diamond League Xiamen Meet.
And with her very first throw, she launched the javelin 71.74 meters, breaking multiple records and finishing just 54 centimeters shy of the world record.
She then skipped her remaining attempts, because even though she might have beaten the world record right there, repeated maximum-effort attempts could aggravate a shoulder injury, and she needs to focus on her long-term success.
Her goal is to win gold at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Passage 1
(25-26高二下·安徽·联考)Pedro Soto, a 56-year-old school teacher, had a sore throat, so he went to the doctor, believing he suffered from an infection by some virus. However, after his doctors did a blood test, they found it was type 2 diabetes (糖尿病). Medicine to get it under control was immediately recommended, but Soto was determined to try something different.
Inspired by one of his co-workers whose husband ran the marathon, Soto applied to the TCS Marathon through an application specifically made for teachers. He had to share an article in which he spoke about his illness and was ultimately selected for the team. As he trained and developed a running habit, he received regular blood tests, and three months later, his blood sugar became normal.
The marathon took place last November. Soto wasn’t able to consistently train until the beginning of August, because in June, he was also diagnosed (诊断) with Lyme disease. It was also during this time that Soto’s father passed away. Still, he used his runs as opportunities to release bad feelings and to build his strength back from being sick.
“For me, it is amazing. It is like a block party, but the block party is the whole city,” he says. “During the race, you’re pounding for hours, the same joints, the same bones and muscles. Something’s beginning to feel pain, but the noise of the people out there, the music, the cheers... everything is louder than your pain.”
Another thing that kept him moving forward was his students. Soto shares that his students are a motivating factor for him to recover his health. “If I’m sick and don’t feel good, that is going to affect my instruction in the classroom, my relationship with the students, and eventually the quality of me as a teacher! Teachers get burned out because sometimes they don’t balance their lives. This TCS Marathon was a great opportunity for me to balance my life.”
1. Why did Soto take part in the TCS Marathon?
A. It was a way to escape from busy work.
B. It was specially organized for teachers.
C. He desired an alternative to medicine.
D. He hoped to display his physical strength.
2. What happened to Soto before the marathon in November?
A. He ran to work through emotions.
B. He stuck to training constantly.
C. His blood sugar got abnormal again.
D. His family members left him one by one.
3. What do we know about Soto’s students?
A. They take him as a role model.
B. They play a role in his well-being.
C. They are picky about teachers.
D. They help him maintain a work-life balance.
4. What message does the text deliver?
A. Prevention is better than cure.
B. Sports can sometimes work wonders.
C. A teacher’s love is the students’ motivation.
D. Teamwork is fundamental to achieving goals.
Passage 2
(2025-2026学年高二上·江苏徐州·月考)A new study of e-sports gamers has found that sparkling water could be a better alternative to still water for those aiming to maintain concentration and alertness during extended periods of desk work.
Gamers often rely on caffeine-rich drinks such as coffee or energy drinks to stay in the zone during long sessions. However, consuming these caffeinated drinks in large quantities poses significant potential health risks, including sleep disruption and increased heart burden. Researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan thus sought to investigate whether sparkling water could provide a safer and equally effective alternative.
On two separate occasions, 14 casual gamers were asked to play virtual soccer for three hours. In one trial, they drank plain water; and in the other, they consumed sparkling water. Based on comprehensive measurements, including reaction speeds, pupil size changes (a key indicator of tiredness), physical stress hormones, and self-reported exhaustion levels, the results clearly indicated that sparkling water was superior in sustaining attention levels and minimizing tiredness.
Scientists propose a plausible theory behind this improvement. The carbon dioxide mixed in sparkling water interacts with specific sensory receptors in the mouth known as “transient receptor potential” (TRP) channels. This interaction triggers an increase in mental alertness, thereby enhancing cognitive performance during extended tasks.
Beyond subjective feelings of alertness, players also reported enjoying the sessions more when drinking sparkling water. Furthermore, statistical analysis revealed that players committed fewer in-game errors while under its influence, although their overall offensive and defensive skills remained unchanged.
“These findings demonstrate that sparkling water effectively reduces both subjective and objective signs of cognitive tiredness during extended e-sports performance”, the researchers concluded.
Nevertheless, these results should be considered alongside the study’s funding sources. The research received partial financial support from a soft drink company that manufactures the sparkling water employed in the experiments, and two of the study’s authors work for this company. These financial links introduce potential conflicts of interest that may have biased the results.
1. What does the study focus on?
A. A better option for sustained concentration.
B. The effects of caffeine-rich drinks on gamers.
C. Measures to reduce gaming-related tiredness.
D. The role of TRP channels in mental alertness.
2. How did sparkling water affect gamers’ performance?
A. By increasing physical stress levels.
B. By reducing misplay during matches.
C. By improving reaction speed significantly.
D. By enhancing offensive and defensive skills.
3. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. The core logic of the improvement.
B. The overall process of the research.
C. The key factors for the improvement.
D. The procedures for collecting experimental data.
4. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The Hidden Dangers of Caffeine Drinks
B. E-sports Gamer’s New Favorite: Sparkling Water
C. A New Study on TRP Channels and Mental Alertness
D. Sparkling Water—A Safer Choice for E-sports Gamers
Passage 3

After setting a new Asian record in the women’s 400-meter freestyle, she went on to sweep gold medals in the women’s 200m, 800m and 1,500m freestyle. Even after her successes, the 23-year-old stayed calm.
From a family of professional swimmers, Li has been talented and confident in swimming since she was young. At the 2017 Budapest World Championships, the then 15-year-old girl was a dark horse in China’s swimming team, winning a bronze in the women’s 400m freestyle and a silver in the 800m freestyle. But soon after this highlight (高光时刻), her career took an unexpected dark turn. At the 2019 Gwangju World Championships, Li failed to qualify (获得参赛资格) for the finals in both the women’s 400m and 800m freestyle. The following year, she badly hurt her wrist during training.
Even in the darkest moment of her career, Li didn’t give up her dream of winning at the Olympics. To get back on top form, she swam at least 10,000 meters every day and ran 100 laps (圈) on a high-altitude track field from morning until noon.
“You are facing the bottom of the pool when you’re swimming, and no one’s talking to you. It’s very dull and can be very frightening,” Li told The Beijing News about her long-distance training. It was these tough moments that shaped her into the calm, strong and gentle person she is today.
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she helped the Chinese swimming team take home a bronze medal in the women’s 4×200m freestyle relay. But she still has one more goal: to win an Olympic gold medal in individual events. “Despite the long road ahead, I will keep chasing (追逐) my dreams,” she told Hebei Daily.
