From a Japanese best-selling novel to a liberating read enabling you to take control of your own happiness, we share four books to add to your "me-time" moments.
The Full Moon Coffee Shop by Mai Mocking
If you love cosy, fantasy books, this Japanese fiction is a treat. The Full Moon is not your typical coffee shop, but a magical one run by talking cats that only appear on full moon nights, when someone needs them the most. Inviting three customers who are at a crossroads in their life, what wordy wisdom will the furry animals have to offer them?

If you used Tiktok in 2024, your feed was likely full of praise for a new mindset tool called "The Let Them Theory". Invented by motivational speaker Mel Robbins, the idea is to free yourself from trying to control what you can't, and focus on what you can. In her book, Mel explores how this popular tool came to life and shows how to apply it to eight key areas of life, with insights from leading experts.
Nine Minds: Inner Lives on the Spectrum (谱系) by Daniel Ammeter
From a surgeon to a bestselling novelist, Nine Minds digs into the extraordinary lives of nine men and women from around the world who have one thing in common: they are all on the autism (自闭症) spectrum. In sharing their experiences and how they view the world, it overturns stereotypes and celebrates the beauty in what sets them apart.
Dogs and Their Humans: Stories of Healing by Noel Fitzpatrick
The love we have for our pets is beyond words, and Noel Fitzpatrick knows this only too well as a vet surgeon of 30 years. Sharing stories of healing and hope from his practice, including entertaining ones which will make you laugh out loud, the book is strong evidence of how deep this connection is.

I'm Lora, an 18-year-old who secretly drew brain diagrams on paper while classmates drew cartoons. However, "Art feeds the soul but starves the body," Mom always said. Her words kept coming to my mind and prevented me from making a decision. The watercolor brushes and the pre-medical application form on my desk seemed to gaze at me together.
Then came the school career fair that changed everything. Dr. Eleanor Whitman from Harvard asked us to list our "hidden skills". My hand shook as I wrote "observing details", something I'd learned from painting flowers. "That's medical research's most needed skill!" she said, sharing how a student turned science notes into textbook illustrations. For the first time, I realized that my two worlds didn't feel so separate.
The real surprise came during hospital volunteering. Watching surgeries, I noticed something—the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy couldn't explain his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast (石膏). "You made medicine speak," the nurse said. Slowly, my drawing pads were filled with cells that looked like colored-glass art and X-rays arranged like abstract paintings.
Mr. Dawson, our career counselor, helped me see the connection. On his whiteboard, my medical knowledge and art skills overlapped in a bright yellow circle labeled "Medical Illustration". He showed me job listings I never knew about: people who draw pictures for science apps or 3D models of body parts for doctors to study. "Your 'impractical' skill makes you stand out," he said, pointing to my dragon drawing now used in pain management workshops. From that day on, I had the answer in my heart about what I should be in the future.
Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for medical education. Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them. My story isn't about a choice between your heart or reality—it's about how two passions can work together to make new possibilities.
24.How did Lora's mother's words affect her?
A. They ruined her confidence in drawing.
B. They prevented her from taking art as a career.
C. They made her hesitate between art and medicine.
D. They inspired her to mix her interest with her future job.
25.What did Lora learn from Dr. Eleanor Whitman?
A. Medical illustration required professional training.
B. Hidden skills mattered more than academic knowledge.
C. Her flower paintings may serve as textbook illustrations.
D. Her art-related skills could be valuable in medical research.
26.Who played the key role in helping Lora decide on her career direction?
A. The nurse who praised her dragon drawing.
B. Mr. Dawson who showed her Medical Illustration.
C. Dr. Whitman who guided her to find her hidden skills.
D. Her mother who warned her of the reality of choosing art.
27.What is the main message of the text?
A. Combining talents creates new paths.
B. Opportunities favor the prepared mind.
C. Follow your passion rather than reality.
D. Success involves small steps and big dreams.
C
Although the shortcomings of the world's dependence on plastics are all too obvious, the benefits they provide are all too easily ignored. Materials made from plastics are lighter, and cheaper and easier to produce. These materials have become vital in everything from building to car making. Plastics have also eased the world's dependence on older materials, and on the living beings, from which many of them came. There are perhaps 10 million pianos in the world. If all the white keys were made of ivory, how many elephants would remain?
Just as the benefits of plastics are often unseen, however, so are some potential harms. Now there is growing concern about what happens when they break up into micro pieces invisible to the eye. To deal with the plastics pollution, the best approach is not to ban plastics, but to manage them more carefully. Better recycling technologies, now under development, are one part of the answer. The percentage of plastics which end up being recycled has doubled in the past two decades, but it is still only 9%! This is not because people do not care about the planet. It is because recycling is harder and more costly than most people realize. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
Greater use should therefore be made of landfill (垃圾填埋场). When properly managed and well monitored, this is far less environmentally ruinous than often believed, and can be simpler and more effective. It also avoids the risk that plastics sent across the world for recycling will end up being dumped (丢弃) or burned. Incinerator (焚化炉), which can both produce energy and allow the resulting carbon to be trapped, are a useful choice too, though they are also unpopular. Fortnum, a Finnish company, has found a way to turn the hydrocarbons (烃) released from burning back into plastic materials. Such innovation should be built on.
When it comes to plastics, the benefits are very much greater than most people will allow—and so is the potential for managing the costs. What humanity needs is not rejection, but responsibility: we should focus on advanced recycling methods and strict waste rules. With proper management, we can preserve the advantages of plastics without destroying the environment.
28.Why are piano keys mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To stress the environmental benefits of using plastics.
B. To argue that pianos should only be made from plastics.
C. To show how plastic materials have replaced natural resources.
D. To explain the environmental impact of using traditional materials.
29.What is the main reason for the low rate of plastic recycling?
A. The risks caused by recycling.
B. The undeveloped recycling technology.
C. The difficulty and high cost of recycling.
D. People's lack of concern for the environment.
30.Which of the following is NOT a feature of landfill?
A. It can be easier and work better if handled correctly.
B. It can reduce the chance of plastics being treated improperly.
C. It can produce energy and stop carbon emissions from escaping.
D. It can be less environmentally destructive than commonly believed.
31.What is the author's attitude toward the future of plastic management?
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
D
Every December, my house turns into the island of unwanted gifts. People are kind, but there are only so many candied nut tins, popcorn towers, and sugar cookies one family can consume.
Let us not forget my wedding-regift incident. We received a very expensive electric teakettle. We don't drink tea, so we returned it to the store and got $75. Later, the store manager called, furious, accusing us of trading them a piece of junk. Someone had bought the kettle and discovered, inside the box, an obviously used cut-glass Easter basket. It turned out that person had regifted it to us. We paid the store back and were handed that ugly Easter basket.
This made me wonder: Is regifting a form of rudeness? To find out, let's explore both sides of the regifting debate.
First of all, humans have been regifting since the dawn of time. Caveman A gives Caveman B a rock; Caveman B gives it to Caveman C. Anthropologists would call it culture. In modern life, it's just efficient. Why let a brand-new item sit unopened in a cupboard when someone else would use it? It's economical. It's environmentally friendly. It's basically the circle of life.
And yet regifting is a high-risk sport. It requires memory and strategy. Give the gift to the wrong person, and suddenly you get the text: "Didn't I give this to you?" Regifting can go terribly wrong if you misjudge a person's taste—or their social circle. The golden rules: never regift within the same social ecosystem, remove all evidence (cards, receipts, etc.), and be sure the item is new and unused. Ultimately, the key is to match the gift to the person—so never give spa products to someone who hates lotions. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
My official ruling? Regifting is not rude. Thoughtlessness is rude. Waste is rude. But passing along something new, unused and suited to someone else's preferences is generosity in its most practical, planet-friendly form. So go ahead—regift joyfully, wisely and guilt-free. After all, someone out there really needs those candied nuts.
32.What does the underlined word "furious" in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Confused. B. Relieved. C. Annoyed. D. Shocked.
33.Why does the author mention "Caveman" in the text?
A. To show the long history of regifting.
B. To introduce the early form of regifting.
C. To highlight the economic benefits of regifting.
D. To explain the cultural importance of regifting.
34.Which of the following might be a successful regifting?
A. Sending a spa product to a newcomer.
B. Returning a used kettle to a local store.
C. Giving a brand-new scarf to a new friend.
D. Sharing home-made candies with a neighbor.
35.What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Does regifting make sense? B. Is regifting actually rude?
C. What's the power of regifting? D. Why is regifting high-risk?
第二节 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The story of the last great auk is a tragic story, but one worth telling. A gentle seabird, it once thrived on the islands of the North Atlantic, but it was hunted for meat, eggs and oil, and its population declined rapidly in the 19th century. In 1844, the last known pair of great auks were found on Eldey Island. A group of curious sailors captured the gentle birds. 36
Scientists have identified five periods of mass extinction, where species disappeared at a fast rate. Previously, these mass die-offs had natural causes, like volcanic activity. 37 But today, life on Earth is disappearing faster than it can be replaced.
There are thought to be over a million species in danger of extinction globally. Take the iconic hedgehog as an example. Three-quarters of Britain's rural hedgehogs have disappeared in the last decade due to urban expansion. 38 The loss of an iconic species signals a much deeper issue—the collapse of entire ecosystems, which are vital to our own survival.
Since we are the cause of this sixth mass extinction, we can also be the solution. Nations across the world promised to protect the earth at the 2022 UN Biodiversity Conference. 39 Hotlin Ompusunggu, a dentist, offered cheap dental care to anyone who planted trees. Since 2011, this initiative has led to over 100,000 trees being planted, greatly protecting the habitat of the nearly extinct orangutans. 江苏省海安高级中学 景苏华 QQ:771515126
40 It's happening in our backyards, too. But unlike the great auk, the fate of the hedgehog can still be changed. The extinction crisis we're facing isn't just about animals and plants. It's about the future of all life on Earth, including us. Will we work together to stop driving the sixth mass extinction?
A. And it's not just hedgehogs.
B. Normally, a new species fills the gap.
C. Extinction isn't just about unusual creatures.
D. And individuals can also have a big impact.
E. Each of these extinctions should not have happened.
F. This sharp decline has caused concern among hedgehog lovers.
G. Sadly, the last survivors were killed not for food but for collection.

Let us act decisively: carry reusable bags to collect waste, refrain from picking flowers or disturbing wildlife, and choose low-carbon travel when visiting. Every small step counts. Together, we can turn awareness into action and preserve this precious heritage for generations to come.
Yours,
Li Hua
