In my front yard lives a wild climbing rose, which is an extremely tough and stubborn plant. Every early summer, sharp thorns (刺) cover its winding branches, ready to threaten anyone who gets close. I have torn three shirts and scratched my hands countless times while trimming (修剪) its overgrown branches. Even walking past it needs extra care, or sudden scratches will bring tiny but lasting pain.
The wild rose is also a greedy grower. It spreads fast and takes up most of the sunlight and soil nutrients. I once planted jasmine and lavender beside it, hoping to enrich the yard. However, all these gentle plants failed to compete and gradually died one by one. The jasmine leaves turned yellow, and the lavender simply stopped blooming.
Still, the wild rose has irreplaceable charm and value. It is a perfect home for local small creatures. Every spring, its pink blossoms attract busy bees and lovely butterflies. On June nights, the scent of these blossoms slips through my window, so sweet and wild that I forget the scratches. In summer, sparrows often hide in its thick branches, singing softly and resting from the heat. It turns my plain yard into a tiny lively ecosystem full of vitality.
I once thought of cutting it down to free up space. But I soon gave up the idea. It has rooted deeply in the yard, growing stronger year by year. More importantly, it has become a quiet witness of my daily life, quietly recording every spring breeze and every golden summer sunset in my life.
Now I no longer complain about its troubles. I learn to adapt to its wild nature and trim its branches regularly to keep it in good shape. It offers beauty and vitality to my small yard, and teaches me a gentle truth: coexistence, not conquest, is the best way to get along with nature. In its messy branches, I’ve found a thorny sort of peace.
4. Why does the author mention the jasmine and lavender in paragraph 2?
A. To suggest they are too fragile. B. To show the benefits the rose brings.

5. Why did the author give up cutting down the wild rose?
A. The difficulty of removing it. B. The cool shade for the yard.
C. The companionship it offered. D. The mini-ecosystem it created.
6. What is the author’s attitude towards the wild rose?
A. Dismissive but grateful. B. Mixed but tolerant.
C. Annoyed but fascinated. D. Approving but fearful.
7. What does the author learn from this experience?
A. Live and let live. B. Every rose has its thorn.
C. No pains, no gains. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Fear of mathematics dates back further than most people assume. A century ago, the German physicist Felix Auerbach, troubled by this very issue and eager to find solutions, published a book titled The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It.
What causes people’s fear of mathematics? Auerbach claimed that the root of this anxiety lies in a misperception about the true nature of math. While many are afraid of making mistakes in calculations, many brilliant mathematicians struggle with simple calculations — this clearly distinguishes calculating ability from math itself. Similarly, this distinction exists in literature: the ability to craft engaging stories with graceful language is an artistic talent that differs from mastering basic spelling and punctuation rules. The same is true of math. It isn’t mere calculation.
What, then, is mathematics? Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. Actually, part of the issue is that we are stuck in the first box. The incredible application of math in science has meant that it is possible, though undesirable, to teach it only with this application in mind. A focus merely on technical skills misses the joy and excitement that can come from finding patterns and understanding them, from seeing the true beauty of mathematics. That beauty lies in wonderfully elegant thinking that allows us to understand the infinite, explore the great symmetries (对称性) of art and nature.
As a language, what sets math apart is the universality (普遍性) of its truths — you can become fluent wherever you come from. As Auerbach puts it, you cannot do “German mathematics with a Japanese accent”. Mathematics unites us through the shared language of reason. In researching the beautiful connections between mathematics and literature, I have found many examples of mathematicians and poets praising each other’s disciplines. As Auerbach says, “Mathematics is a poetic art”. If we can be shown the beauty of mathematics, we will cease to be afraid of the technical details supporting it.
8. How does the author develop paragraph 2?
A. By giving a definition. B. By making a comparison.
C. By illustrating an opinion. D. By presenting a phenomenon.
9. What does the author imply by saying “we are stuck in the first box” in paragraph 3?
A. Perception of math only as an art form. B. Mathematicians’ discovery of new patterns.
C. Overemphasis on scientific applications. D. Misinterpretation of math as a language.
10. What would Felix Auerbach probably agree with?
A. Math is a language mastered by all of us. B. Math anxiety arises from poor math education.
C. Learning technical skills is a top priority. D. Appreciating math’s beauty relieves the fear.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Felix Auerbach: Discovering Math’s Beauty B. Technical Details: The Core of Math Anxiety
C. Redefining Math: Integrating Math with Art D. Math’s Beauty: Rethinking Our Fear of Math

During the Little Ice Age, the Inuit and the Norse coexisted in Greenland. Although both groups faced the same climate challenges, their fates were different. Why the Inuit thrived while the Norse declined has confused archaeologists for decades. To answer this question, the researchers investigated the issue from a new perspective. A study published in the European Journal of Archaeology by Mathilde Meyer and Dr. Felix Riede reveals the unexpected role of childhood play.
The research team analyzed toys unearthed from archaeological sites. The Norse settlements yielded 72 toys. The Inuit settlements, located in similar environmental conditions, yielded 2,397 toys. The study revealed that the Inuit created a much broader and more varied range of toys. These included miniatures of kayaks, knives, and lamps, each designed to teach specific practical skills. In contrast, Norse toys were limited to objects related to traditional agricultural activities, such as bird figures and domestic tools. Dr. Riede explains, “The Inuit’s toys not only mirrored their survival strategies but also actively cultivated innovation among children. The Norse toys, however, stressed a conventional way of life.”
More strikingly, the Inuit children’s play grew dramatically over time. This may reflect a deliberate cultural response to environmental pressures. The Inuit’s developmental environment for children emphasized exploration. These practices allowed children to experience new technologies and strategies, such as dog sleds and the umiaq (a large boat), crucial for surviving the harsh conditions. Over time, Inuit toys also revealed subtle shifts in design and emphasis that corresponded to broader ecological and social changes. By contrast, the Norse stuck to established norms, limiting their capacity to innovate or transition to marine-based economies.
Though the lack of toys may indicate that Norse society was less creative from the start, the researchers argue that their tendency to give irrelevant toys intensified any initial lack of creativity and ultimately reduced their chances of survival. By contrast, the Inuit’s preference for various and relevant toys paved the way for their children. This research invites reflection on how contemporary societies and modern parents educate children to face future challenges, such as climate change and social crises.
12. What is the main purpose of the new study?
A. To solve a historical survival mystery. B. To contrast two parenting philosophies.
C. To offer a solution to climate challenges. D. To document two ancient lifestyles.
13. What advantages did Inuit toys have over Norse toys?
A. Variety and durability. B. Diversity and adaptability.
C. Practicality and stability. D. Creativity and complexity.
14. What did the change in Inuit children’s play over time suggest?
A. Sufficient play could reduce survival threats.
B. Exposure to more toys improved kids’ creativity.
C. Traditional wisdom was overlooked for survival.
D. Experimental play facilitated cultural adaptation.
15. What lesson can modern parents draw from the study?
A. Offer a wide range of learning opportunities.
B. Emphasize toys that promote imagination.
C. Choose toys that develop real-world skills.
D. Encourage cooperative role-playing games.

Positive everyday actions, such as consistent reading and enough sleep, can make a difference to your brain’s health. Apart from these routines, the following advice helps you build your brain power.
____16____ A single workout can improve working memory by boosting blood circulation and releasing chemicals that create new neural connections. Studies confirm that people who stick to daily exercise perform better on memory and concentration tests. Just like you can train your body for brain health, you can also train your minds to process uncomfortable emotions. It is common to be trapped in states of anxiety and worry. ____17____ Research proves that directly addressing what makes you anxious breaks the cycle of fear and avoidance.
Moreover, social bonds also play a critical role. Experts have found that loneliness activates the body’s stress response and raises inflammation (炎症) levels. Over time, persistent stress and inflammation damage brain cells and the connections between them. ____18____ Simply reaching out to a friend or family member for even a short call can fight loneliness and provide a powerful benefit.
In addition, stimulating your brain with novel activities is a powerful way to keep your brain engaged and growing. ____19____ This practice may have short-term and long-term benefits for your brain. Unlike routine tasks, novelty stimulates the formation of fresh neural pathways, enhancing cognitive abilities over time.
Boosting brain fitness demands a great deal of mental and physical energy. However, mastering several simple habits can sharpen your mind and strengthen connections with people around you. ____20____
A. Physical exercise is an effective way to reduce anxiety.
B. For example, you can learn a new skill or try something artistic.

Today was the last day of school before winter vacation. When our teacher announced that each of us was to join a community volunteering program during the break, the classroom buzzed with excitement. Whispers and cheerful questions filled the air. “What kind of volunteering will we do?” “Who in the neighborhood needs our help?” Everyone could hardly wait for the coming meaningful tasks.
Emma and I have been close neighbors since kindergarten, so we naturally teamed up without a second thought. After school, we wandered around our community and soon spotted a notice on the community notice board:
“Due to the recent heavy snow, our community courier station (快递站) is now out of service. Part-time volunteers are needed to help handle the delayed packages.”
The cold weather had slowed down deliveries a lot, so we immediately understood how tough things were there. Without hesitation, we decided to give it a shot.
We headed straight to the station, only to be shocked by the total mess. Discarded (丢弃的) packaging lay all over the floor, and packages were piled everywhere, nearly blocking the passages. People streamed in and out nonstop. The air was thick with frustration as anxious customers crowded around the counter, all asking for help with their late deliveries at once.
At the center of the chaos stood Mr. Lee, the station manager, looking exhausted, with a barcode (条形码) scanner in his hand. He pointed at his computer screen, where rows of delivery orders were marked “Overdue” in red. He told us the station was facing two big problems. First, the place was so messy that people could hardly walk inside, and nothing could get done. Second, with so many customers needing help at the same time, he simply couldn’t deal with all the questions by himself. Wiping sweat from his forehead, he admitted, “I can’t handle these alone.”
Emma and I exchanged a determined look, ready to take on the challenge.

My Favorite Badge for coming-of-age ceremony
As we are about to embrace our coming-of-age ceremony, I strongly recommend the badge with the words “Growth means responsibility” as my favorite.
First of all, this badge perfectly captures the essence of becoming an adult. Adulthood is not merely about reaching a certain age; it is about taking on responsibilities for ourselves, our families, and society as a whole. When we turn 18, we are expected to make our own decisions and bear the consequences. This badge serves as a constant reminder that growing up means learning to shoulder our duties. Secondly, compared with the other two badges, “Growth means responsibility” is more inspiring and profound. “Be grateful” is certainly important, but gratitude is just one of the many qualities we should develop. “Chase dreams” sounds encouraging, yet without a sense of responsibility, dreams may remain fantasies. Responsibility is the foundation upon which both gratitude and dreams are built.
For these reasons, I believe the “Growth means responsibility” badge is the most meaningful choice for our special day.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 We quickly divided up the work based on what we were good at. Emma volunteered to comfort anxious customers and answer their questions patiently, keeping the order of the crowd. Meanwhile, I set out to tidy the messy station. I swept away the waste packaging and sorted countless packages by address and size. Though our hands turned freezing and we felt tired, we didn’t pause for a rest. Mr. Lee was greatly relieved and praised us repeatedly for our efficient help.
The courier station took on a brand-new look. The floor was clean and tidy, and all packages were placed in order, making the whole space spacious and organized. The noisy crowd gradually dispersed, and the station returned to a peaceful and orderly state. Customers no longer waited anxiously and left with satisfied smiles. After finishing all the work, we felt a strong sense of accomplishment. This volunteering experience taught me that small efforts can make a big difference. Cooperation and dedication are the most precious gains in our winter vacation.
