Unit 1 Teenage Life
单元阅读精练
主题一、外刊精读原文
话题:Balancing Teenage School Life
Nowadays, teenage life is filled with various challenges as students step into senior high campus. Managing study, club activities and personal life has become a core task for most teenagers.
Striking a balance between academics and extracurricular activities plays a vital role in teenagers’ long-term growth. Many teenagers tend to blindly take part in all kinds of campus activities for social experience, ignoring the pressure from increasing difficult school subjects. There are also some students who bury themselves in textbooks all day, turning down all campus social activities. This one-sided lifestyle will limit students’ all-round development.
Schools and teachers usually encourage students to arrange their daily schedules reasonably. A practical time management plan, where students list daily tasks clearly and set deadline for each task, can effectively reduce teenage life anxiety.
Experts suggest that teenagers should prioritize important tasks and learn to refuse meaningless social invitations. Only when teenagers master self-management skills can they enjoy colorful teenage life without falling
behind in schoolwork.

Passage 01
(2025·全国甲卷·阅读理解B篇)
Starting high school is a big adjustment for teens. Most freshmen struggle with three main things during the first semester: fitting in with new peers, keeping up with harder lessons, and managing free time.
A recent survey carried out among 1,200 high school freshmen shows that over 60% of students feel anxious in the first two months of senior high. Many students said they failed to balance club activities and schoolwork after signing up for multiple school clubs. Some also reported that they had trouble setting long-term learning goals.Dr. Smith, an educational psychologist, suggests that freshmen should make simple and clear short-term goals at first. “Don’t set too big goals at the beginning, which will bring you huge pressure. Small daily goals, such as finishing homework on time and previewing new lessons, can help you build confidence gradually,” he said.
Besides, schools should organize orientation activities for new students to help them get familiar with campus facilities and teachers. Parents are also supposed to offer emotional support instead of only focusing on their children’s grades.

As a senior high freshman, Sarah used to be a shy girl who was afraid of communicating with strangers. She was always alone at break time and had few close classmates at the beginning of the senior high semester.
To change this situation, Sarah signed up for the school volunteer club. Her first volunteer task was to help organize a children’s reading activity in the community library. At first, she was nervous to talk with little kids and other club members. She wanted to give up halfway. However, her club partners encouraged her to try step by step. She tried to guide kids to read storybooks and share reading feelings with them.
After finishing this activity, Sarah found it joyful to communicate with others. She took an active part in the following volunteer activities: community cleaning and elderly companying. During these activities, she made lots of new friends and became outgoing slowly. Sarah said that taking part in volunteer activities was the most valuable experience in her teenage life. Passage 05
Time management is one of the most essential life skills for senior high teenagers. Different from junior high school, senior high school arranges more courses, heavier homework tasks and various campus activities, leaving students less free disposable time. Without reasonable time arrangement, teenagers are easy to fall into anxiety and fail to finish daily tasks.
Educational psychologists put forward three practical time management tips for high school students. First, make a daily to-do list every morning. Students should mark tasks with different levels of importance and finish important tasks first. Second, stay away from electronic products during study hours. Smart phones are the biggest distraction for teenage students’ efficient study. Third, leave proper buffer free time every day. Students cannot arrange full tight schedules; spare time can help them adjust mood and deal with unexpected things.
Good time management will not reduce students’ learning pressure greatly in a short time, but it can help teenagers form regular living and learning habits. Mastering this skill helps teenagers control their teenage life actively instead of being controlled by messy daily tasks.
1. Why do high school students need time management?
A. They have too much free time B. They face heavier study and activity tasks
C. Schools force them to make schedules D. Parents require them to manage time
2. What is the first tip for time management?
A. Keep away from phones B. Leave enough sleeping time
C. Make a daily to-do list D. Deal with small tasks first
3. What is the author’s attitude towards time management?
A. Supportive B. Doubtful C. Unclear D. Critical
Passage 06
Starting senior high means meeting new classmates. For most shy freshmen, making new friends in a new class is challenging. Here are several easy tips for you. 1
First, be active and brave to start a conversation. Most of your classmates are also new here and eager to make new friends. 2 Small talk about classroom environment, teachers or favorite subjects is the best conversation starter.
Second, show your sincerity in communication. 3 Simple polite words and sincere smiles can shorten the distance between you and your classmates. Never pretend to be someone you are not, because true friendship is built on real self.
Third, take part in class group activities actively. Group games and class team tasks provide chances for you to cooperate with different classmates. 4
Last, be a good listener. Most teenagers like sharing their feelings with others. When your classmates talk with you, do not interrupt them casually. 5
A. Just relax and take the first step bravely
B. Sincerity is the key to true friendship
C. It is hard to get along with new classmates
D. You can make close friends during group cooperation
E. Here is how you build good friendship with new classmates
F. Listen carefully and give proper feedback politely
G. It is easy for outgoing students to make friends
Passage 07
Many senior high freshmen are confused about balancing schoolwork and club activities. They worry that joining clubs will take too much study time. Actually, these two parts can promote each other if you manage them properly. 1
2 Do not sign up for more than two clubs at one time. Too many club tasks will occupy most of your after-school time, making you unable to finish school tasks on time. Choose one club matching your real hobbies to stick to.
Arrange fixed study time every day. 3 During this period, put aside all club related matters and focus on textbook knowledge and homework. Clear time boundary can avoid mutual interference between study and activities.
Set clear short-term goals for both study and club work. 4 When you finish small goals on time, you will keep a balanced rhythm of teenage campus life.
5 Once you find yourself falling behind in study because of club activities, reduce your club working hours at once. Study is always the main task for senior high school students.
A. Stick to your hobbies all the time B. Here are some useful suggestions C. Make study your top priority when necessary D. Control the number of clubs you join E. Never waste time on meaningless games F. You can plan a 2-hour fixed study period every night G. Big goals are more important than small tasks

Doubtful C. Unclear D. Critical
